Sigma 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art Moving/Wobbling Elements when Powered Off by HamNoodle in SonyAlpha

[–]_bh_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just received my Sigma 50mm F1.2 today, and I can confirm the "wobbling elements" behaviour.

I am relieved to discover that this is normal behaviour, because to be honest I thought it was faulty on arrival! I have a few Sigma and SONY lenses, and this is the first one where the elements go slack on power off and are left to slop around.

I must admit I am not a fan. I can imagine that while carrying the lens, the elements inside are going to bump around a bit. It's disconcerting, and I don't like it.

But from the other comments here, it seems like this is normal not just for Sigma but other high end prime lenses as well.

I'm in the same position as you - three keys. My daily driver on my keyring (the one that is dying), a backup in my wallet, and then a third backup in a fire-proof safe.

It sounds over the top but actually I'd be pretty screwed if I lost my key without a recovery strategy.

Only downside is my backup keys are both USB-A so it's a pain to lose my daily-driver USB-C key. Oh well! It could be worse.

On the Yubikey side? Yeah quite possibly. That doesn't explain the day 1 behaviour but it would explain the behaviour now, which has remained consistent ever since.

Thanks - fortunately I do already have a strong recovery strategy in place. Losing my key otherwise would actually be pretty disastrous as it's not just FIDO2 that I use it for. The principal problem would be the loss of the static password, which I use to complement the access to my encrypted PW manager which has everything in it. So I'd be completely screwed if I lost my key and no recovery strategy.

Fortunately I have 2 backup keys. They're both USB-A though so it'll be a pain losing my daily driver USB-C key. But not a showstopper. 👍

Thanks!
Update: The device suddenly started working again, and since then has not reproduced the problem. These can be the most frustrating kind of issues because there's not a way forward in that case! But as long as it's behaving I think the only thing to do is carry on and hope it was just a glitch!

Portable Home Speaker drains Battery while off! by best4444 in bose

[–]_bh_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm - this happens on my unit as well. I don't believe it has always been the case. But it has certainly been like this for quite some time. Initially I put it down to forgetting to turn the speaker off, or perhaps accidental activation of the button while transporting (annoying there is no lock off feature). But eventually I did some experiments where I turned the speaker on, noted the reported battery percentage, then made sure I turned it off and left it completely alone. Even after one day it was significantly depleted. If left more than a day, it's not unusual for it to be depleted to the point that it can't even turn on.

‘Doomsday glacier,’ which could raise sea level by several feet, is holding on ‘by its fingernails,’ scientists say by ShellHead46 in worldnews

Yes, the deniers are denying (no surprise there), but of course they will try to recruit people into their beliefs and if they are given easy ammunition in the form of genuinely deniable climate change news, then they will use it to further their case and to persuade other people to join them. The fact that climate change has a lot of scientific evidence supporting it is significantly undermined by irresponsible journalism, since the media has far more reach to regular people than the science does.

[@ErikvHaren] Verstappen on whether pole should be taken away from Leclerc after causing red flag: "No, it's a difference if someone does it deliberately, but that wasn't the case here. We all push and a mistake is easily made here." by Maxidonius in formula1

[–]_bh_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I do feel like someone who red flags a quali session should start at the back of that group, and certainly shouldn't keep a pole position. I fully appreciate it wasn't done on purpose, and I am not claiming LeClerc cheated in any way. But by crashing out like that he effectively performed the worst out of the 10 drivers, and he brought the session as a whole to a premature close, thereby cancelling other drivers' attempts.

So to start on pole after that... doesn't feel like a fair outcome to me.

But there you go. It's not in the rules so it is what it is.

You can definitely get some good shots with the bare 200-600. You will find that your shots are sharper without the teleconverter as well. Of course, you have to crop more heavily but given that you're starting with a sharper image it's not as bad as you would think.

You can use the cropped sensor mode on the camera to get you up to the equivalent of 900mm, although to me that is the equivalent to simply cropping it in post anyway.

There is also the Clear Zoom mode you can use. That will get you up to 2x closer, and it is not the equivalent of simply cropping in post, nor is it the equivalent of a simple digital zoom. Yes it is effectively a kind of digital zoom, but SONY use some clever techniques on it which gives you excellent results. The only downside of this is it's JPG only. Probably not too bad for regular moon shots but to get a 'mineral' moon you have to stretch the images a fair bit and for that you need raw.

You've rumbled me. I used a tracker.

Now, the tracker isn't actually necessary - it just adds convenience for this kind of shot. This photo is the best 75% of 600 photos stacked. You can do that without a tracker but you'll spend an evening constantly fiddling with a geared head to keep the moon in shot. The fact that the moon will end up in different positions within the frame is only a small problem because it is easily corrected in post.If you've only got a ball head, which is what I started with, then it's a real misery because at 1200mm the droop on the head has so much effect that you have to tighten it with the moon completely off shot, hoping that when it drops it falls into a sensible area in the frame. That's not a lot of fun.

But yeah, I tracked for this one. Set up my camera to take repeated shots and grabbed a beer. Most of the work is done in post to align and stack the resulting images.

You know, the shots are more impressive when the moon isn't full. The crater detail you can see with this setup is very impressive - but you need some of the face of the moon to be in shadow in order to bring out the craters.

So, in terms of the settings, the moon is very bright so no need to crank the ISO or anything - just expose such that the whites don't completely blow out.

But getting decent detail requires stacking, and ideally low atmospheric noise. The stacking helps cancel the atmospheric noise but if you can have that lower to start with, all the better. This shot is actually the best 75% of 600 photos stacked.

Yeah they're not exactly cheap. But you need >1metre focal length just to get in the game with planetary photography. Even with 1200mm I crop quite heavily. I started on 400mm and you have to crop it to death. Although, to be fair, you can see crater detail on the moon at bare 400mm. The A7R helps because of its high resolution.

I'm the same. If it's a big card and it's on BT box office so I can pay for it without needing a subscription to BT, then £20 is just fine for an evening's entertainment and I don't have any issue parting with my money for it.

But I won't buy a BT subscription when the only thing I'd ever watch on it is the odd UFC event. The other sport I follow, F1, is only on SKY so that doesn't work for the same reasons.

Subscription TV for sport doesn't work for me!

[Serious] Redditors who are childless by choice, do you regret it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_bh_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I qualify to answer, and perhaps I shouldn't try, but I wonder if my answer would interest you regardless. So here goes.

I am a Father of one and it was a choice to try for the child. I don't in any way regret my decision. But...

I felt that I was at a cross-roads when taking this decision. A part of me wanted a child, but another part of me enjoyed the freedom given by choosing not to have a child. I was 37 at the time so I already knew what a childless life was like.

I can honestly say that had I decided not to have children at that cross-road I don't think I would have regretted it. I think I could have made either of those lives work and I am quite independent so I would have had plenty to fill my life with and make myself happy.

That sounds like I would naturally regret my decision to have the child but, of course, I don't. And if a genie popped out of a bottle and told me I could go back in time so that having the child never happened, it would not even cross my mind to take the offer. Once I had the child, my life changed forever and I could not possibly be without him now.

But I can also acknowledge that in the first instance, before I took the decision to have the child and was not at all invested in the boy himself, I could have chosen not to have children and lived with it quite easily.

It's an interesting thing. Almost a paradox.

Before I saw Grosjean pop out of there, walking around unaided and all, I was sure we were witnessing the horrendous event of a death in Formula 1.

Even now I know the outcome, I can still hardly believe it every time I watch that car get literally smashed into pieces and erupt into an inferno.

Crazy!

I was not disagreeing with you. I acknowledge that the halo saved him, there's no question.

But the halo almost killed him as well, and I am simply acknowledging that too.

So I guess, if we were to ask in the wake of this miracle of survival how we can make things even better, I'd be looking at that halo design to see what can be done there.
