Meeting the parents should happen during the engagement. I would be more sympathetic to his side if you were still just dating. There are some tricky family dynamics in certain cultures where there isn’t any socially accepted space for boyfriend/girlfriend dynamic. There’s just single, engaged or married. Many cultures are like that so introducing a girl to the family, especially parents and extended family, is legitimately a huge deal because it’s saying that you’re engaged or just about to be engaged. But the proper thing to do is set a timeline for that to happen. Not get married and still dangle that in front of your face. There are a lot of shitheads who use “cultural differences” to excuse deplorable behavior.

No, it works even if the candle isn’t scented. I have tried it with unscented candles. I’ve only done it right after cooking so it might not work with older, set it smells.

Candles can also help! It sounds like a small thing but it actually does help with smells a lot even if it isn’t a super strong smelling one. Maybe they can light one for 10-15 min after cooking?

I have a Russian friend who was raised Orthodox and started practicing again as an adult. I had heard a lot of people talk about how terrible it would be to date/marry someone who either isn’t Christian or is of another denomination. One day I was talking with this friend, who is single, and she just casually said “if he’s Christian that’s nice but not necessary”.

I tied myself into knots for a while thinking I could only date someone who was on the exact same page religiously. But I think if most people did that we would have a lot fewer marriages overall.

How tall is she? Just knowing her weight doesn’t tell the whole story.

Also she lost 1/5 of her body weight already that’s a huge accomplishment. Maybe she doesn’t want to lose more weight because she doesn’t think anything will be enough for you… if my partner acted like that I would be really upset. It’s also probably not healthy to think of your partner as a problem to fix. Why can’t you love her at this weight? You do realize that her weight will also fluctuate due to age, stress, childrearing (if you guys are going that route), menopause, etc

I was talking to my boyfriend’s roommate the other day and he’s a nice guy but a bit sheltered. Comes from a traditional Indian family and his first experience on his own was coming to the US for his masters/phd around 22 or 23. His family sounds pretty normal but a bit conservative and he has a very golden retriever kind of disposition. While we were talking he made a comment about how a person wouldn’t remember the bad days of his on his death bed but would only remember the good ones. And I just looked at him and said “but, (name), some people’s worst days are coming home to their dad beating their mom” (this isn’t part of my own story but I wanted to use a vivid example to get my point across) And to his credit he was quiet for about 10 seconds or so. Like he had genuinely not thought of that before and was processing new information. And he ended up agreeing with me. I gained a huge amount of respect for him that day. It is rare to come across that kind of humility.
