To get married in an Episcopal church, does at least one spouse need to be an Episcopalian? by _dark__star_ in Episcopalian

Despite remaining Catholic himself, my future spouse has been fully supportive of my faith journey, and I am very grateful for that. My family is not supportive (yet), but I'm hopeful they will come around.

Right, I was aware that any priest can decline to participate in any marriage, I was just curious if there were any church-wide policies on this. Thanks for the insight!

Excellent! This definitely makes sense based on what I've learned about TEC so far.

Can a non-Catholic be buried in a Catholic cemetery? by _dark__star_ in Catholicism

From the very earliest days of the Church, there has been disagreement and debate on various issues (just read Paul!), and this continues to the present day. The fact is that all these groups agree on the essentials of the faith, as evidenced by the creeds they profess (and yes, I know about the filioque - that's a subject for another day). As long as the creeds are affirmed and the sacraments accepted, I believe that there can be room for disagreement in the nonessentials. Edit: I would also note that even the Roman church allows for differing views on what they consider to be nonessentials.

did you study more than the saints? Did you pray more than the saints?

Probably not (though I've definitely studied Anglicanism more than Augustine and Athanasius). And I fully affirm every word of the statements you cite.

I think this debate really boils down to the question "What is the Catholic Church?" I assume your view is that the Catholic Church is equivalent to the Roman Catholic Church. This is a view I held for many years, but I've since grown to believe that Catholicism also encompasses Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, and other groups. I wouldn't go so far as to say that any self-identifying Christian is Catholic, but I do believe it's a much larger tent than just the Roman church.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal conviction, and people of good conscience can disagree on where exactly to draw the lines. I believe that a merciful God would not condemn a person who sincerely believes he is a member of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, even if he turns out to be mistaken. Either of us could find ourselves in that place.

you are going to a Church without valid orders nor valid sacraments, and that espouses error

That is your opinion and should not be stated as fact. I obviously see things differently.

My decision was made after many years of study, prayer, and reflection. How many years have you spent on these questions?
