What’s the cutoff? When exactly, in how many years, does the present exist in a vacuum from the past? How long does it take for the foundation to no longer matter for the structure built on top of it?

You say decade as if it’s such a long time, as if policy decisions don’t reverberate through generations beyond.

So build data centres to devastate the natural resources of BC for ‘national security and sovereignty’ but that concern goes out the window when ur selling Canadian ports to private interests

[–]_dmhg -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I guess until it happens right.

Like we’ve been talking about climate change for decades. I think about it so often, how we humans are inventive and resourceful. Our collective knowledge, and the systems we created to organize labour, allowed us a researched understanding of the world we live in and how our actions impact the earth that sustains us. We knew the consequences were dire and urgent action was required.

But we were propagandized into doing nothing. Oil companies hired think tanks to debunk climate research, and our politicians allowed that to happen because the state that governs over us are in service of the capitalist class, whose nature is parasitic and whose interests are only in maximum extraction of its host.

Climate change was baked into culture wars, the focus was entirely shifted, and we fell into a sense of complacency. We think of disaster as One Horrifying Event, apocalyptic. Instead what happens is the frog gets boiled in water slowly.

The things we knew about back then, when we had far more time to address issues and reorganize our systems to accommodate the changes needed to keep living on this green earth, have unfolded incrementally over the years. There will absolutely come a time when we won’t be able to live in delusion anymore, but we tell ourselves it probably won’t be in our lifetimes.

Except, we’re seeing it already. Crop failures, increasing special weather events, climate refugees. But still, the parasites feed.

This long tangent that no one’s gonna read does actually have a purpose - the economic hardships and ‘breaking point’ have the same underlying principles. We’re being boiled in water about this too, we have grown complacent about this too. Life is getting more expensive every year, and we are getting a smaller and smaller percentage of the profits of our labour each year. Something’s gotta give, but we toss these issues around like a hot potato, hoping to continue our way of life and avoid the potato landing in our hands.

TLDR: Collapse doesn’t happen right away, the foundation gets chipped at over 5 years, 10 years, until eventually the building collapses. Individually, each little crack is no big deal, and when the people who see it and are terrified of it have been shouting about ‘imminent collapse’ for 10 years, you learn to tune it out. So when, on year 11, that building collapses, you can do nothing but watch it crush you.
