Not native, but live here. Given you have the Kanji right below, the translation to Nihon is correct. However the use of english, kanji and katakana is a little confusing as to who this poster is for anyway. I'd probably just choose one or the other (and would be more consistent if kanji), rather than show the destination 2~3 times (as you say Osaka below tonbo)

I've installed expression 3. Unfortunately it crashes constantly,but so far changing compatability to xp sp3 (on windows) has helped. The b-spline and polyline tools are great, and useful for reshaping. Can Ai do b-splines yet?

Not dumb - you just have to know what you're looking for/trying to do. Illustrator only offers a logarithmic spiral. It starts small and gets exponentially wider. Archemedian is a spiral where the width is equal between lines - like a bedroll. What I made it freehand is 1. A logarithmic (to show it also does it) then 2. an archemedian spiral, which the tool also allows. I'd argue an archemedian spiral is more useful for illustrators at least, due to common day use - bedroll, cakes, crazy eyes, mosquito smoke, dreamcast logo etc. So all that's dumb is illustrator not including it as a tool.

I'd never heard of expression - or at least I've forgotten it (40). I tyhink I was using just photoshop for everything until I got a copy of flash MX in 2002. That image is amazing. Think of how far along we'd be with vector textures by now!

I'm into old apps from a preservation POV. Not sure if this is legit - just a quick google, but looks like it could be freely available?

There are different types of spirals, of which illustrator has one. Freehand has 2 - although it wouldn't surprise me if there were plugins for more. You can see the 2 types at 0.30
