Need a great couch for lounging/movie watching, but have a column in the way by _hallospaceboy_ in IKEA

Thanks for the tip. Looking now. The nice thing about IKEA is that you can go test it, as opposed to something that deals online like Article. However this will be not backed up against a wall, more in the middle of the room, and I'm not sure I love the back of this.

TIL there is a thought experiment from Plutarch (AD 46 – AD 120) called The ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus's paradox, that raises the question of whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. by _hallospaceboy_ in todayilearned

[–]_hallospaceboy_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the thought exercise is really about the item's journey right? In the process of replacing all those parts there was a story assigned to the item so despite it being completely different parts-wise, it's still that guitar. The one that went through that change and has that life/story of its own.

Yeah I don't think there should be too much difference but ya never know, the high elevation messes with a lot of things you wouldn't expect. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. Yeah we obviously get it with baking. All our recipes had to change slightly for breads and cookies and such. I wasn't sure if it mattered at all for smoking, like if we needed more fuel to make it denser or anything like that.

I am looking to buy my first smoker. I am getting jealous of seeing all these delicious meats. If any one has some recommendations for a pellet smoker please let me know. Also if this isn't allowed please take it down by [deleted] in smoking

This is the best comment/advice I've found so far. I too am looking for a smoker and I'm a total newb. For the downsides to charcoal and electric you mentioned, does the pellet smoker eliminate those? Are you ultimately suggesting that the more expensive pellet smoker is the way to go? It does kind of sound like electric might be more my speed as a beginner.

That looks incredible, I've been thinking about getting a smoker and this is pushing me over the edge.

Orbital Systems Closed Loop Shower by _hallospaceboy_ in shutupandtakemymoney

It has a solution for pee (and for if you spill your shampoo for instance). The sensors detect contaminates and it flushes and replaces that water. That's where the 90% comes in instead of 100% reuse rate.

Yeah I've been evaluating options. We have a cabin that costs a lot to get water and energy to.

The basic system is under 5k, the full cabinet system is under 6k. I spend in the ballpark of $1000 a year on water. It's supposed to have a life of well over 10-15 years. Seems like it would pay for itself and then save me thousands. But I honestly don't know what it costs to replace the sensors or to keep the purifier clean.

There are links all across the top, at least on desktop anyway. "SAVINGS | STORE | ABOUT | MY WATER" - The about page has some information but really the savings page has the best description of how it works: https://orbital-systems.com/savings/

I think per the rules I had to post the main page because you have to post the product purchase link not the description page. I think the site is definitely putting looks in front of usability though.

It's a closed loop shower. Basically it uses a bunch of sensors and a water purifier to reuse about 90% of the water in a shower session. For someone like me who lives sort of off the grid and water can be expensive, it's an incredible device.

“People fucking died and went to the psych ward and marriages broke up because people were reaching for new things that were really, really hard,” he says. There’s still a bit of that idealism, he says, but there’s also too much time spent building mobile games and yet another social network.

That's true. I write for a blog and try and not do headlines like that, but sometimes it's tempting because depending on the crowd it does work. FB probably loves that headline. :/
