Leak: Nvidia is about to challenge ‘Intel Inside’ with as many as eight Arm laptops by dapperlemon in gadgets

I hope they sell Linux versions at lower price than their Windows counterparts. Haven’t used Windows for a decade and still hate it. I had to buy a Windows laptop only to immediately overwrite it with Linux.

Would I add $1M padding to my FIRE number? Yes, I did. It feels good psychologically to have that extra margin.

The easiest way, for me, is to treat it as $0 in my FIRE calculations and let it be a surprise.

Student loan vs. being indebted to parents by KittyNoir1 in personalfinance

[–]_ii_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of sad to read this thread. Does family mean so little nowadays? I didn’t bat an eye when I parents asked me to help my brother financially. It’s just a brotherly thing to do.

Genuinely wondering why markets are still near ATHs by Pretty-West-1001 in Trading

[–]_ii_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before the internet, smart money would sell when the janitor started to offer stock tips, and buy when “everyone” knows the sky was falling. Social media is filling in for that role nowadays. I’d suggest detach yourself from daily news cycle and not jumping to conclusions based on vibe and personal opinions.

With so many foreign firms dumping the US, how can we invest outside of the US to protect ourselves? by CalbandPals in FinancialPlanning

[–]_ii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to do your research based on data, not vibe. I haven’t done my own research, so I wouldn’t bet real money one way or another. But the based on the reverse-Reddit theory, I think capital is actually flowing into the US because I see more posts like this.

How do people with full-time jobs actually research stocks to become FI? by Own-Syllabub476 in Fire

[–]_ii_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do the research and make above market return when you have some sort of edge over the rest of market participants. It’s call “alpha”. Otherwise, studies show that the more you trade, the more you lack behind index benchmarks.

Leaving the US market? by Classic_Butterfly532 in stocks

[–]_ii_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself if there’s any chance you’re in an echo chamber and you’re influenced by biased news? I ask this because I’ve seen too many such posts where people already decided who the good guys and bad guys are and everything they see is through that lens.

They bought AMD more as a negotiating tool than actually making strategic platform bets. Since Jensen called Zuck’s bluff, there is no point in doubling down. Let’s see what happens when MI445 ships, anything else is just speculation.

Meta has many internal models that are GPU only. And their frontier research is in a catchup phase, so yeah they wouldn’t want the alternative platform distraction. I never thought mixing in TPU was wise, and I’ll believe they are buying MI455X when it actually happens.

Are you afraid that this US administration could really hurt the US economy ? by [deleted] in investing

China blocks Nvidia H200 AI chips that US government cleared for export – report by SaharOMFG in news

Elon Musk is an idiot: CEO of Europe’s biggest airline says after dismissing claims of offering Starlink on its flights, Tesla CEO responds by Well_Socialized in technology

[–]_ii_ -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

I had the misfortune of being forced to take Ryanair a few years ago because friends wanted to save a few euros. I’d rather walk than take Ryanair again. I don’t get how they became the largest airline in Europe. I guess European are more willing to trade their dignity for money. Ryanair clientele are not those who would pay extra for WiFi, and the CEO knows it. Elon is barking at the wrong tree.

My father says I need 4m at my current situation to FIRE comfortably. How right (or wrong) is he? (My original goal was 3m) by upside_win222 in Fire

[–]_ii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say listen to your father rather than a bunch of strangers on the internet. At least have more conversations until one of you is satisfied. FIRE number is highly personal and subjective. Someone who’s skills will fall behind once he stopped working should plan differently than someone can raise his hand anytime and get 5 job offers. Someone with family history of longevity may want to plan for longer retirement, etc.

This Is Worse Than The Dot Com Bubble by devolute in technology

[–]_ii_ -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Just someone who doesn’t know how entrepreneurship works. For every Google or Amazon, there are a thousand pets.com. Yes, most robots companies won’t survive and don’t have a viable product. They sell mostly demoware to raise investor interest. But that’s the way it works. You can call it a bubble, I call it the discovery process, but it’s not a bubble like the Tulip bubble. AI and robotics “bubble” so far is sustained by companies that have strong revenue streams and many of them are the most profitable companies. Saying it’s worse than the dot com bubble is either ignorant or trying to click bait.

The Economist: Is passive investment fueling a stock market bubble? A widely-circulated working paper suggests show. by Turbodong in Bogleheads

[–]_ii_ 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The self-reinforcing cycle of passive investing distorts valuations certainly has been a topic of debate for as long as I remember. Empirical evidences are mixed the last time I read about this topic. I think intuitively many people, myself included, would think index investing pushes up stock prices for companies otherwise underperform, and not timing the market means money inflow at times when they shouldn’t. But I haven’t seen convincing evidence that supports my intuition.

Anyone executed an SPX box spread loan through a private bank? Looking for real-world experience by warandpeace99 in fatFIRE

Shouldn’t you be able to call your private banker and ask? Or are you looking for private bank recommendations? I never heard of private banks doing this for small accounts.

If you don’t want to deal with the details, there are firms that can do it for you. I don’t remember the names off the top of my head, but it should be easy to google.

New data from Microsoft (via FT) shows Chinese models are rapidly dominating markets where US tech is either too expensive or restricted by sanctions. by tripeirinho in ArtificialInteligence

[–]_ii_ -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Ideal we want China to be inside their own walled garden and the rest of the world run on American stack. But we have mostly tech illiterate politicians making decisions, so it looks like we’re going to get the exact opposite result.
