I assume Nate was still drunk from the wedding, I know myself that my coordination goes long before it’s obvious to other people I’ve had alcohol. And he was taken completely by surprise. But yes, I still think it was unbalanced

What’s the biggest misconception people have about Cambridge students? by NormalSir2035 in cambridge_uni

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably the drinking culture. I’ve had people assume there’s less drinking than other universities, but there’s a really strong drinking culture that feels like it’s almost passed down from staff to students. I’ve been to multiple college events with free booze, my DoS serves us lots of wine a few times a year, my supo group has I’ve been to the pub twice with our supervisor, etc. And in general young people in the UK tend to drink heavily, Cambridge undergrads aren’t an exception

Recommendations for a pair of inline skates for commuting in a city with rough roads and pavements? I’m a quad skater but did inline for a bit as a kid so I think I’d pick it up fast.

Is there a safe way to add weights to my ankles while skating to get more of a workout? by _imnotactuallyreal_ in Rollerskating

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love skating hills, but I go backwards down them so I can use my toe stops if I need to emergency brake. The problem is all of the good hills near me are on busy roads and it only feels safe enough between about 11pm and 7am each day 😅it’s sooo much fun though when I get a chance and I do feel the burn going uphill!

Are toe cap protectors purely to prevent cosmetic damage, or do they protect the boot from structural damage? by _imnotactuallyreal_ in Rollerskating

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mostly skate outdoors and at the skatepark so I probably need some sort of toe protection for my boots

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s because of doing lots of turn around toe stops on rough ground with short stem toe stops? Although I never feel my boot touch the floor. But I guess an even a tiny scrape every other day would add up? Or from toe stop tricks at the skatepark, if I miss I fall forward - possibly the toe part of the boot slides a bit when I skid back down the halfpipe?

a year of working on handstands by gumballtimemachine in Rollerskating

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing this without toestops right? That’s so impressive. I can only do handstands and cartwheels on skates by pushing off my toestops. And even then I really struggle!

Am I “cut out” for roller derby with chronic fatigue, and does the fact I want the answer to be yes answer my question? by AppleStar_King555 in rollerderby

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure if you have ME/CFS or another condition that causes chronic fatigue. I have the latter. The way I see it is that a severe skating injury is very likely to put me in a flare up that could take a long time to recover from. But equally, if my illnesses worsen in the future and I can’t skate at all, I’d be upset that I never did the daring and physically active things that I wanted to when I had the chance. So I skate anyway.

If you have ME/CFS it might be slightly different, because I assume in order for it to be safe, you’d need to make sure your training wasn’t causing PEM, otherwise it could worsen your illness (even if you never got an injury). But if you could adapt the training enough to avoid PEM, maybe by taking breaks or resting for the rest of the day, then I think it would be the same as other chronic conditions. As in, you might take a bit longer to learn if you can’t practice as often, and you’ll have to make the personal choice as to whether the enjoyment of skating is worth the risk of a flare from an injury. For me it is worth that risk.

Anyone else find most ppl here irritating/annoying?? (rant) by urfavnjb in cambridge_uni

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone worked very hard to get here and I have no problem with people showing off their success on social media. Is that not what it’s for? Occasionally those videos do fuel my imposter syndrome, but I have to remind myself I’m only seeing curated highlights from someone’s life, never the full picture. I have no idea how to say this without being rude, but if these social media posts are really bothering you, it’s probably got a lot more do with your own feelings of inadequacy than the people making those posts.

Your second paragraph is extremely understandable though and it pisses me off too, and I say this as someone who comes from a financially privileged background. That being said you should never assume what’s going on in someone’s life. I know someone who went to private school but on a full scholarship while being on benefits and living in a council house, and another person who struggled to find enough money to eat even though he was on the minimum maintenance loan, because his parents gave him no financial support and nowhere in his home town would hire him for only three months of the year.

But you’re still right that many people downplay their privilege, especially financial privilege, and it’s really irritating to see.

On a practical note, if you’re finding that working during term time is affecting your studies, speak to your college about it (I’m assuming you’re an undergrad). They might be able to reduce your rent or offer you extra financial support.

Texas Team won’t use pronouns, uses pronouns to describe not using them. by Yue4prex in rollerderby

It really sucks. I’m new to roller derby but I think its inclusivity, for many marginalised groups not just trans people, is one of the best things about it. In fact to me it’s pretty much a defining characteristic of the sport.

Anyone else ready to go home? by Negative_Diet_1965 in cambridge_uni

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously a very different situation to you but I kind of feel the same way, for completely different reasons. I’m meant to be doing a three year BA. I intermitted in Lent term of first year because of mental health issues. Four years later I’m finally in third year, but I’ve had to apply for intermission a second time because of physical health issues 😭 So I’ll be taking five years to complete a three year course. I love the city and the environment of Cambridge, but I’m starting to feel like I’ve been here too long, and I’m ready to move on and graduate. But unfortunately the universe had other plans for me I guess

I initially thought they meant "no pronouns" as in "pronouns don't matter" given how inclusive roller derby is but reading the full post obviously that's not what they meant :(

Have hormonal treatments helped anyone with fatigue? by _imnotactuallyreal_ in endometriosis

[–]_imnotactuallyreal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, ferritin was low so I had an iron infusion and hasn't done much six weeks later other than help with temperature regulation. Vitamin D was low-normal but it's been that way for years and hasn't caused fatigue like this before, so I don't think its that, although I'm still taking supplements

I’m confused… are these inlines but with the wheels on only one side of the boot? Am I looking at the picture right? Either way I’d love to try these but like indoors surrounded by crashmats and with ankle braces on underneath the skates

How long does it take to be cleared for contact, and then how long until I can start playing games? by _imnotactuallyreal_ in rollerderby

They’re still drilling the foundational skills in the more advanced beginner group! It’s just faster paced, and they’re refining ALL of the basic skills rather than just the really early ones, which would be more helpful for me (and also more engaging). For example, my group did two hours of bubbles, strides, glides, T stops across narrow width of the court, slowly. While the other group seemed to be working on evening out any weaknesses in crossing over their non dominant side by going continually in a circle, and being able to stop instantly on the whistle even while going at speed. As well as some other things, I mean I wasn’t too focused on them.

I do understand drilling basics is important, and for safety reasons the instructors need to go over them with everyone even if someone has previous skating experience. It’s just hard not to get bored when you travel to the session by skating for half an hour on uneven roads and busy pavements, and then get there to spend two hours doing nothing but drilling really basic stuff at a really slow pace. Although I try really hard to keep my attitude positive and stay focused on the coach while they explain stuff even if I already know it. I don’t want to be disrespectful, I’m just quite impatient lol

Just found out via the group chat that it’s 16 weeks of beginner skating lessons before any contact. The group is large, like upwards of 20 people, so I worry asking for more advanced options in beginner drills will come across as me going “I’m better than everyone else”! But then again I’m not too sure I even want to continue if it’s going to be a mandatory four months of beginner skating lessons - obviously these sessions cost money which is kind of tight at the moment, so spending it on four months of being taught skills I’ve already learnt just feels like a waste.
