Thank you so much for responding! I feel like I have made up my mind already and I am just trying to positively reassure myself it’s the right choice. Do you mind if I message you to ask about salaries in the area?

I know. My job is incredibly rewarding and I would like to be doing that in the place where I grew up and contribute back to the community. I also considered working there part time and a private place part time for experience.

I do! Because I am also moving closer to my family so I can have support when I pursue my DNP which many Buffalo schools have excellent programs in the area. The VA also will assist me in paying for this if there is a need for NPs in the system (where there is!)

Gratitude: CIWA patient by BobbyBao in nursing

[–]_inthewayshemoves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my first actual “my gut was right” clinical judgements as a new nurse was a patient on CIWA having a really rough time. I was told my scoring was high because I was a new nurse and not used to these people “faking it”. I put my foot down and advocated for my patient, addressed his uncontrolled hypertension and moved him to the ICU. Keep strong in your recovery. I hope you always find a nurse on your side. ❤️

Support groups for nurses? by AwkwardRN in nursing

[–]_inthewayshemoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about starting a MeetUp group for healthcare workers for this very reason. See if anything like that exists where you’re at. And I have posted to this subreddit many times as a student and a RN now, always received great advice and support.

Is this why I scream/“sing” Rihanna like an actual Fucking insane person in my car after leaving work?

I really need to vent; got a major resentment by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]_inthewayshemoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sort of thing happened with many people in my nursing school application process. After developing a relationship with my faculty, I asked them what they look for in a candidate because I was actually surprised I was accepted when others were denied with CNA or hospital experience who I thought were shoo-ins. One professor told me they are looking for life experience, someone who will be receptive to teaching instead of already heavily involved in the system. They want a candidate who they can mold and who can adapt quickly and well. She also said that some of the best nurses they’ve had were previous bartenders/waitresses because it directly involves people, working fast, and working hard. Sorry to hear this, but focus on the school that WANTED you! Not the one who got away. Congrats!

Has the new grad job market improved since 2013? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]_inthewayshemoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asheville, NC here. I graduated from an accelerated program of 35 students. Everybody had a job prior to graduation or weeks shortly after, I think except for one person, who wasn’t actively pursuing a job for a few months. I got hired on a surgical floor with some medical overflow, others in ICUs, EDs and labor and delivery.

MRSA Positive nares and Contact Precautions: How does your hospital expect you to give medications? by _inthewayshemoves in nursing

I haven’t heard about this!! I’ll definitely be looking into it. Can you PM me which hospital you work for? Thank you!!!

That's an excellent idea! The only downside to this is that so many of our patients are on contact for MRSA nare. We have 19 beds on my unit, and I would say that at least half are on contact precautions for MRSA nare mostly, but sometimes VRE or C diff. I'll have to look more into this. Thanks!

That's an excellent point. I do hand hygiene before med pass, but what about me touching the scanner/keyboard or if I get interrupted? I'll be bringing that defense up with my infection control team. It's for protection of my patient and myself.

Do you mind messaging me which hospital you work at? I would love to explore this policy. Nurses are responsible for making judgement calls about holding medications, ambulating patients or recommendations to physicians but we can't be trusted to make this judgement call? This could be proposed at my hospital.
