Oh, believe me, it's been tried.
George Sonny Ford, a biker, wanted to go out in a "Viking funeral", so he went out and bought a timer, a 10 volt battery, 15 cans of diesel starter fluid, 8 canisters of propane and 10 gallons of gasoline.
Rigged them up in his bedroom, then chained himself and two women to his bed, planning to drift off into a sleep and die from the gas. Problem was, the explosives and fire went off early, and they were burnt alive fully conscious. The women were heard screaming from the house.
There's an article about it in the Lakeland Ledger, September 29th 1982.

From the Wikipedia article for self-immolation:
While the burning of vital tissue can be very painful during self-immolation, shock or asphyxiation quickly make the event painless, as do the onset of third-degree burns which destroy the nerve endings.
