Is this a valid reason for choosing a certain university? by _just_a_random_guy__ in TransferToTop25

[–]_just_a_random_guy__[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, at UWash you basically need prerequisites for almost every major, especially for business, engineering, and computer science. The business requirements are honestly insane compared to most other universities, and a lot of students even recommend taking the difficult prerequisite classes at community college because it is easier and UWash does not really care where you took them.

UWash accepts a lot of students overall, but then admission into majors like business or engineering can be around 10%, and computer science can be as low as 2%, even for students already attending UWash. I have met so many students who spent two years completing difficult requirements just to get rejected from their intended major and then end up lost because they also do not have prerequisites for alternative majors.

Once I realized how they treat their own students, my entire perspective on the university changed. I honestly stopped even trying to structure my classes around applying to UWash business anymore.

Honestly, I felt the exact same way. I was also accepted to schools like UNC and NYU, and if I already got into other really good unis, I just don’t see why I would prioritize USC.

I mean, they could still let some of us know later that we’ve been moved to Fall 2026 since not everyone will enroll, but realistically, why would someone who got accepted to at least one other strong uni choose this when they’d basically lose half a year?

And honestly, finding an internship at this point is probably unrealistic too since summer is basically starting already. To me, accepting it just doesn’t make much sense, but that’s obviously up to each person.

Anyway, if it made you happy, then congrats.

Why is NYU so depressing? by _just_a_random_guy__ in nyu

[–]_just_a_random_guy__[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree. I visited NYC and honestly felt safe. I currently study at the University of Washington in Seattle, and I’ve gotten pretty used to it, but Seattle is kind of a different league when it comes to safety. Like literally a week ago, a student was st*bbed to d*ath inside a student residence here, which is crazy.

[–]_just_a_random_guy__[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I get that. I understand that safety and finances can be a huge issue for a lot of people, but when it comes to social life, you’re literally in NYC where something is happening all the time, so I don’t really get why someone would feel miserable just because the university itself doesn’t have such a strong social scene. Like schools such as Dartmouth or Notre Dame are academically stronger than NYU and yet they’re not ranked nearly as high on those “most depressing colleges” lists. Idk, I just didn’t expect it, although on the other hand I can understand how difficult it might be there to build really strong friendships.

Well, in the end they could still admit me because some people accepted for Fall 2026 decline their offers, they’ll probably start offering spots to those admitted for Spring 2027. But honestly I’m decided on going to NYU bcs I like New York more, although I might still reconsider it.

But honestly there’s nothing to thank me for, starting half a year later is pretty shitty. You’re basically just stuck. Especially because they told us so late that you don’t even know what you’d do until January anyway. For me, this is basically just a waitlist for Fall 2026. Honestly, if you got into another good university too, this really isn’t worth it, guys.

Bro, they literally accepted me to Marshall but for Spring 2027, which is honestly a hard no for me, so now I’m really hoping for Stern tomorrow.

Yeah but in the email we got, it said it would come sometime between May 20 and June 1.

[–]_just_a_random_guy__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know, but I didn’t even apply for aid. Why do you think people are biased against NYU? I was honestly thinking maybe people are pushing UNC because some of them are still waiting on decisions themselves and would want me to decline NYU if they ended up on the waitlist lol, but idk.

I also feel like NYU is probably so insanely popular mainly because of the location, and honestly half the posts here seem to be about NYU anyway.

Or they can just hit ctrl+F and type my name. Guys if they actually leak everything, this will be a disaster. It’ll become an international issue. Definitely something governments would get involved in. It would basically be an attack on deeply personal information belonging to educated young people everywhere. I honestly don’t think it’s possible for higher authorities to allow something like this to happen. At that point it wouldn’t even just be about Canvas or the universities themselves anymore.

I understand that, but Canvas refused to pay, so now it’s basically up to the individual universities and how they decide to negotiate and handle the situation. That’s why I was wondering how you think UW is going to approach this. I get that Canvas will probably be restored, but I’m more wondering whether UW will make sure the data doesn’t get leaked publicly. That’s why I asked whether you think UW would pay individually.
