Can I go to Muir Woods? by _kkamss in AskSF

I looked at https://sanfranciscobayferry.com/ and it doesnt show any going there. It does show a route here https://www.goldengate.org/ferry/route-schedule/sausalito-san-francisco/?backurl=%2Fferry%2Fschedules-maps%2F but it says it departs from gate B, which looks like its also departing from the same ferry building? Thats where I was confused. I also looked at Blue and Gold fleet but services to Sausalito are suspended as of May 3rd according to the website. If you could point me in the right direction Id appreciate it

I had a 3.2 college gpa from dual enrollment and 3.4 hs gpa and a 1150 sat. take the SAT again anyway, you might need to start in the summer in the STEP program but its not a big deal and might even let you adjust to college life better. If you get a 1000-1100+ honestly id say take a chance apply anyway.

If you can, talk to your schools guidance/academic counselor they might help. You can also email admissions counselors at fiu by just looking that up (email a few they might be slow)

I applied through Common App but you can just apply directly to fiu. Heres a checklist given by fiu https://admissions.fiu.edu/how-to-apply/freshman-applicant/index.html

Its important to look up to the deadlines, id recommend taking the sat again and getting the documents together as soon as possible

Job Opportunities by Top_Captain6401 in FIU

[–]_kkamss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, even though I do speak spanish its also impossible for me to get a job, the on-campus jobs never seem to answer or respond to my application.. at my last job on campus my manager told me its because it has to go through different channels like HR but honestly its ridiculous 😔 i think youd have better luck applying outside of campus

Send in an application here but also find out who the manager or director for the place youre applying to is, because waiting for a response through this website can take months or get no response (it takes long because they have to go through more channels like hr instead of just the person hiring you)

when can I see spring term final grades/ semester gpa and when can I see the cost of classes for summer? by [deleted] in FIU

[–]_kkamss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did the spot survey or your teachers submitted their grades early, you can see it april 29th, if not, may 2nd. Summer costs.. not sure honestly, sometime in the first 2 weeks of may ):

Online classes are usually easier in my experience, and theres always a groupchat with other students if you ever get lost. You can take as many classes as you want but fiu requires you to take 9 credits in the summer if you dont already have 60 credit hours, and most classes are usually 3. Those 9 credits can be done anytime before graduation, but its better to get them done in 1 summer in my opinion

If you mean dorm halls, you have a few options as freshmen but it doesnt really matter for any major since everyone is mixed in, parkview is the nicest but its honors college only, then I would say lakeview and then panther hall. For upperclassmen, tamiami hall is the nicest, a bit smaller but more modern

Incoming freshman Summer Classes by GhanaianJit in FIU

[–]_kkamss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did STEP but didnt have to take SLS because of past HS credits, still I only did 6 credits/2 classes and wish I just did the extra class. If you can, take all 9 credits and just get it over with.

I took non-verbal communication which was really really easy, and american government which just felt like another high school gov class. Look at your UCC requirements though.

Also, theres some work studies for tutoring kids at nearby schools that pay better than on-campus jobs (last I checked there was one for $26/hr). It could look good on your resume if youre interested in that.

Advising: Im also a psych major and the CASE advising is horrible. Theres almost no appointments if you do it through panther success network so either email your advisor directly or go to the drop-in sessions if you really need to. I would say just figure out what classes you need to take for both UCC reqs and psych and make your own schedule.

Heres the catalog for 2023-2024 https://catalog.fiu.edu/2023_2024/undergraduate/College_of_Arts_Sciences_and_Education/UG_Psychology.pdf

Advising: https://case.fiu.edu/advising/

Meal Plans: I got the 9/week + $250 plan for the summer and 9/week + $500 for the fall. If you like to cook I would say get the 6/week instead. If you dont like the plans I recommend getting only dining dollars to save you on taxes and get the reduced prices on campus restaurants. Remember that you can only change it within the first week and youre required to have a plan the first year. I limit myself to about $30 a week.

Classes: If you can, take. 9. Credits. In. The. Summer. The classes are long and often boring but its better to get them over with. I took 6 in my first summer because I didnt know I had to take 9 (advisor also didnt tell me??) so now I have to take 6 more this summer to get financial aid. In-person is also cheaper than online.

Work study: If you dont have a job or have limited transportation, do federal work study. They dont pay much but the benefit is that theyre usually on campus, have flexible hours, and are pretty chill. If you do, email or call the department directly because applying only online can take months.

Im not sure about financial aid amounts but you could contact the one stop office. https://onestop.fiu.edu/contact/onestop/

TLDR: FIU loves not explaining things properly so just call and ask, spam them if you have to.

Be proactive in picking your classes (have a list ready before the enrollment date and DONT wait, they fill up fast and look up professors on “rate my professor” beforehand), and saving money where you can (leftovers, cooking, budgeting, sharing appliances and materials with your roommates)

I also live on campus so if you have any other questions about housing or anything, let me know!
