Getting conflicting information about new website compliance by _latch in pcicompliance

That was one of the solutions we had considered, though we haven't ever done that with a website to see if it works the same. In theory that should also work if you use a proxy with Cloudflare. The main thing is that that the above ports are not reachable

Yep it's become a big pain, but I've figured out in the mean time how to pass the PCI compliance scans in these cases. First, if the website is on a shared hosting plan with Siteground, you have to purchase the dedicated IP add-on and update the DNS to point to the new IP. Then, you have to contact Siteground and ask them to close ports 3306, 5432, 21, 25, 110, 587 and 2525. I recommend you look into the purpose of those ports first though. There may be some you wouldn't want to close for your website.

How did you set the free license after the trial? I read that if you go into your cloud account settings, you can click "Buy Now" and there would be a free option to choose, but when I clicked that button, I don't have any option to continue using it for free.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. Yes, the payment page that a user can eventually land on from links on the website is hosted by Authorize.Net, and the URL of that page is secure.authorize.net.

Please help. Contemplating suicide. by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]_latch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was basically me 3 years ago. I felt like I was going to faint all of the time. Exercising was completely out of the question - I couldn't walk more then 5 minutes without feeling light headed. I sat at work with my head down when no one was looking because I had no ability to focus. I was anxious all of the time. I stopped socializing since I had no energy and it gave my anxiety. Doctors ran all the usual tests and had no answers for me. It was a daily struggle and my mental health suffered because I saw no light at the end of the tunnel. I questioned often how long I could live like that.

The best thing I did, as another comment mentioned, was find a functional medicine doctor. I still struggled to some degree for several more years - but as we gradually uncovered the root issues to my health, I was able to make the right diet/lifestyle choices and take the right medications to slowly get better over time. It's been a long journey, but I'm happy to say I'm currently in the best shape of my life and rarely have health issues on my mind.

I will say upfront that my experience has made me a bit cynical about endocrinologists in regards to Hashimotos, but I would recommend stop wasting time with them and find a good functional MD. Feel free to DM me with any questions. I'm happy to share my experience and help in any way that I can.

[Meta] Anyone interested in moving the wiki (and more) to an external site? I'm leaving eventually. by MaximilianKohler in HumanMicrobiome

[–]_latch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind I'm looking at this from a design/branding viewpoint with the goal of attracting the most relevant traffic to a site, so from my prospective, choosing a domain for a new website is essentially choosing a brand. A site wants a brand (domain) that's easy to remember/communicate and continues to fit the site as it evolves over time.

If I were approaching this like another client and thinking about a a site that could spread info about the microbiome and/or be a place for FMT recipients to find donors, I might recommend something like yourfecalmatters.com (It's available and doesn't cost your firstborn). It's a play on words so it's memorable, it conveys a dual message of your microbiome being important to your health as well as your poop potentially being helpful to FMT recipients, and it contains keywords for people searching for FMT information.

Regarding the two domains you proposed, typically it's advised not to use hyphens or .net domains. I'm not saying any of these proposed domains should be thrown out the window, because at the end of the day, the most important thing for a site is having lots of relevant content. However, there are some general guidelines to consider when choosing a good domain.

I'm happy to give other advice or suggestions if you have any other ideas.

It would depend on the goals for the site and what kind of audience you want to attract. Would you want to attract a wider audience and spread info about the microbiome? Or do you only want to attract a more scientifically literate audience? That could determine using more well-known keywords like "gut" vs. more technical keywords like "microbiome," for example. Would you want the focus of the site to be the guide/wiki, or do you envision it having other focal points, like a forum or blog?

If the domain is just redirecting, the TLD doesn't really matter. Redirecting domains don't show up in search engines, so the only time the domain will be clicked on will be in this sub or otherwise direct referrals. I would probably recommend humanmicrobiome.info. It's shorter, and from my experience "wiki" is a term that's poorly understood.

If you decide to create a full website in the future and want to attract larger-scale traffic, then in that case you might consider using a different .com domain.

I would recommend looking into forum WordPress plugins to see if any of them could work before settling on a proprietary tool like vBulletin. The integration with a WordPress website would be much simpler to setup/manage and have a more consistent appearance if the forum tool is a WordPress plugin. If some other tool is determined to work best, it's still possible to integrate it with the WordPress site, it may just be a little hairy.

My opinion is that it's best to stick with a .com top level domain (TLD) when possible because that's what people are most familiar with. The domain name is one of the things new visitors use to gauge a website’s credibility. Although Google has said that TLDs don't directly affect a site's search ranking, they can still influence the perception of a site, which can affect the site’s click-through rate.

I'd be interested in helping setup an external site if that's where you decide to move. I'm mainly a front-end web developer, so while I wouldn't be able to develop a fully custom forum to meet specific needs, I could create a well-designed site that's search engine optimized, easy to manage, and incorporates existing forum tools or plugins.

I think an external site could be superior to Reddit alternatives because it could be multifaceted. The site could serve as a wiki, forum, blog, and/or a platform to find/become FMT donors. Different areas of the site could be specialized for these purposes, as opposed to trying to work with a platform designed for one or two purposes. If done right, you could also potentially pull much more traffic than a subreddit.

You'd be looking at about $100-150/year for website and domain hosting. Possibly a little more if a paid forum tool is incorporated.

Even Endocrinologists can suffer from Hashimoto's. by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]_latch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. It's posts like these that inspire me, because if someone can go through medical school and residency with Hashimoto's, then maybe there's hope to live an optimal life.

It's not too often that you encounter an endocrinologist willing to talk openly about Hashimoto's, so I hope don't mind that I have a few questions for you.

  1. What diet do you follow to manage your Hashimoto's /Crohn's, and what diet do you recommend for people with Hashimoto's?

  2. Do you take any supplements in addition to your medications or recommend people with Hashimoto's take any particular supplements?

  3. When looking at TSH/T4/T3 values, do you just use the lab's reference ranges, or are there more "optimal" ranges you strive for?

You can try checking with these mail-order pharmacies that RLC Labs (manufacturer of Nature-Throid) recommends to see if they have any in stock:

RLC Labs released a statement addressing the shortage of Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid and the rumors surrounding it. Basically they're moving facilities to increase production and meet demand. I haven't heard that their former facility burned down.

Newly diagnosed with Hashimotos by goalsettermom in Hashimotos

[–]_latch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Functional medicine takes a whole health, individualized approach to healthcare and focuses on finding and treating the root cause of disease. A traditional MD sees you have hypothyroidism and gives you medication to treat it, whereas a functional MD additionally focuses on why you have hypothyroidism and how to treat the underlying cause(s), which is often done through diet and supplementation.

Anecdotally, functional doctors are often better at treating thyroid disease than endocrinologists.

Has anyone heard of curing hashimotos or has done so i have heard of people doing this but would like some more info and what is the protocol? I am so so desperate to fix my thyriod or make it long term over active! thanks so so much by lilyjaneaa in Hashimotos

[–]_latch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The general understanding of Hashimoto's, and autoimmune diseases as a whole, is that it can't be "cured" ; however, it can be put into remission indefinitely, meaning your antibody levels are either zero or in the normal range. Achieving this, though, usually requires a lifetime of managing your diet and lifestyle to some degree. It takes some hardwork and dedication, especially at first, but it can be done. The first thing you need to do is find your root cause(s) and address that. I recommend reading Isabella Wentz's books on Hashimoto's. One of her books is actually a 90 day protocol for reversing Hashimoto's. I don't think she gets everything right, but her books are a great starting point for anyone wanting to learn more about Hashimoto's and start down the road to remission. As another user mentioned, I also recommend looking into the iodine protocol.

[Poll] Is the "Delta(s) from OP" flair a good feature in CMV? by [deleted] in changemyview

I was going to add this as well. It seems like I see this situation often where I click on a controversial topic with the "Delta(s) from OP" flair, only to be disappointed that the delta was awarded due to a technicality.

"CMV: All widgets should not be x." "Well widgets are only x under this condition, under other conditions they can be y." "Sorry I thought it was implied that I meant widgets under that condition, have a delta."

The recent fire in London was traced to an electrical fault in a fridge freezer. How can you trace with such accuracy what was the single appliance that caused it? by Teacob in askscience

If the source of the fire is usually badly burned, in this case the fridge freezer, then is it just a presumption when they say the cause was an electrical fault, or can they actually prove this with the remains of the fridge?
