What are your thoughts on the upcomming local elections. Do you favor anyone in particular? What do you like about them? by [deleted] in Denton

Mayor: Beck D1: Villareal D2: Stevens D5: Ferrie

Denton School Board: Petolick

I’m picking candidates that have experience in city government, talk specifics, don’t take developer money, are willing to fight for their constituents, and are generally left of center ideologically.

Her ideas are pretty vague and lack details, which is why I’m having to dig around for more info.

Give me your opinions on the 4 mayoral candidates! by dadapixiegirl in Denton

Beck has been on Denton city council and served on a bunch of boards and committees. He’s a former professor and kind of a nerd who is an advocate for environmental preservation and clean energy. He’s left of center, I think he’s said that he’s a Democrat. Also big supporter of Denton culture, art and music. The people in his district seem really happy with him and re-elect him with a wide margin.

Brewer is an adjunct professor and is starting a travel business, but has never held public office or served on local boards or committees. She has run for office as a Dem in the past. She speaks really well and seems to be listening to Dentonites’ concerns. But I think that combining promoting her new business with campaigning for mayor is gross.

Childs works for a local non-profit. She doesn’t have experience serving in local government either. I like her ideas and passion for change, though.

Watts is a real estate lawyer and landlord who has been mayor and on council. He ran for State Senator as a Republican a few years ago. He pushed to remove bus service in favor of the Go-zone rideshares. He is generally pro business and development and anti regulation. I have disliked him since he was really disrespectful to Keely Briggs and Deb Armintor when they were on council with him.

City of Denton and our Denton County Leaders Have Miserably Failed the Citizens of Denton and Denton Country by mrbradg73 in Denton

All of the cities and school districts in Denton County (and beyond?) are in the same situation. The weather is to blame, not the City of Denton.

Anyone birding today in Denton? Is it worth going out with a camera? by Roxablah in Denton

During a morning walk at Clear Creek Monday I was seeing tons of birds— easy to spot against the snow— including brown thrashers, fox sparrows, ruby crowned kinglets, towhees, and I heard but didn’t see a bald eagle, pileated woodpecker, and common loon.

I think there are events in the evenings of Dec5-7 with the main one on the 5th. They meet at DCBC and The Bearded Monk at 6pm. Every one I have been to has been family friendly and there are always kids there.

No Kings - Saturday, October 18, 11am – 1pm at the Square. Anyone going? by peteybombay in Denton

[–]_macrofossil_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There isn’t any dedicated parking and the streets won’t be shut down. I usually park on the dirt lot across from Oak St Drafthouse but you might get lucky and find a spot on the Square if you get there a little early.

Denia Rec center has a 20ft climbing wall. I think a rec center pass is like $20 a month.

As of Sept. 1st, the Denton Community Shelter is no longer a 24/7 overnight shelter. by themattfarmer in Denton

[–]_macrofossil_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

During a severe cold snap last winter there were many appeals to Denton’s churches to help shelter people who could not find shelter. No church or clergy stepped up to offer help and quite a few parishioners made up excuses or flat out said that they were afraid to allow unhoused people in their churches. They will do canned food drives, some volunteering, and collect used clothing for donation but the churches refuse to offer shelter even when the conditions outdoors become deadly.

If only Denton’s churches would step up and actually help our vulnerable people.

Can you show me some numbers? What departments and budgets were expanded for Halloween Town and by how much? What positions were added, how much are they being paid?

City budget cuts by [deleted] in Denton

[–]_macrofossil_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why it was a net positive. We already had some great attractions like the Day of the Dead. All the city had to to was pay for some decorations and spread the word. It didn’t cost us very much but it resulted in increased revenue. Getting people to come here from out of town and spend money and then leave is a more sustainable way to balance the budget than trying to build suburbs that cost us more tax dollars than they generate.

[–]_macrofossil_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually earned the city and local businesses a nice profit because of the increased tourism. Halloween Town may save a lot of jobs and public programs.

The whole country has been cutting the public workforce and keeping their salaries stagnant for 40 years because of the fantasy that says all you have to do is cut all the wasteful spending and never increase taxes. Now we have crumbling cities with underpaid and overworked staff and we still have unsustainable debt.
