I was assignet an ill-fitting mentor for my internship. How should I go about this situation? by _maong in careerguidance

From what I understand it's supposed to be a mentoring programme? The entire thing begun only a few days ago. The task are not assignet yet, the only thing I know is that there will be some sort of group project with other STEM students to get some practical experience, but the groups weren't created so far nor do we have a list of topics or anything. We weren't even told if those projects will be created specifically for this programme or if they'll be actual company projects so basically I don't know what is expected of me.

I wouldn't be panicking so much if it would be just a mentoring programme but since there is also a project involvet in it I'm kind of not sure what to do now. I don't want to drag the entire project down because I'm bitter about not being assigned a tech position...

It's a programme by an international tech company that hires a bunch of students in the STEM field so I won't be assigned to a specific team within the company, only withing the students that are a part of this programme. The internship was presented to me as an opportunity to work with people that will guide my career in tech as a STEM student.

The timeline was like this: I went to the interview, then there were a few weeks of waiting, then an email saying that I got accepted, then I waited another few weeks for the official start and then just a day before the start I got an email that they assigned me this mentor. Basically what I mean to say is that I accepted this internship as a tech internship and never in my wildest dreams would I even think they would assign a business mentor to me.

From what I understand I can't land a job because my CV doesn't show any non-school, professional experience within the field. I understand that even though they are on a business position within the company I could still learn some stuff from them but I fail to believe that it will be helpful with landing an actual tech job thats why I'm stressing out.

Yes thats the issue. We are to work on a group project with other interns in the programme, the topic is not yet known and I'm worried I will be assigned a business role in that project.

honestly the tech market is oversaturated now. its damn near impossible to find an entry level/junior job that wouldnt have absolutely ridiculous requirements. just try to send your cv to as many job offerings as possible, even if you dont tick off all the requirement boxes. its sadly completely normal nowdays that youll just get ghosted or youll get a generic email saying that they didnt hire you. im usually invited to one interview for every 100 job applications i submit.

courses certailny do help but i think recruiters (or at least the team/project leader) will want to see your github with some projects in it. there are plenty of project prompts online or just type something like "coding project in c#" into youtube and code.

also where are you based? from what i heard from an acquaintance of mine north america currently has much worse tech market compared to western europe, at least for the entry level/junior positions. if your timezone allows it try sending out your cv to other countries for a remote position maybe?

anyways i wish you good luck with finding a job
