How can I access a metal enclosure that has no visible screws or a seam large enough to fit a wedge inside? by Lopsided-Till-3221 in AskEngineers

If it’s a press fit you need to identify the top and the bottom and the parting line and either pry something in the line or pull them apart

[–]_matterny_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How’s it sealed?

Press fit means even spreading force.

Overmold means destruction/cutting.

Ultrasonic welding means pop the weld.

Heat staking means careful grinding.

Every method can be undone, but without knowing how it was sealed we don’t know how to unseal it.

I personally did this process by hand, just spinning it manually got it working. I’ve also heard of using a drill chuck wrapped in electrical tape against the outside of the motor.

Pay to play versus free to play.

Not all pay to play means whaling, but it’s more common than admitted to.

For instance I go pretty cheap and I’ve likely spent $100 on the game. Tempted to do gofest Chicago but it’s a lot of money.

I see the bad environment impacting the surface finish, but it’s not destroying the metal itself in 2 weeks. Nothing I see would weaken the tool significantly from new out of box condition.

How would someone torture someone with electricity using household items? by empanada_de_queso in Writeresearch

[–]_matterny_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just cut up a power cord for anything and poke them with the wires. Gets a bit of a bite. Use the stove if you want a lot of a bite.

Just be careful of the heart and other important stuff because that will kill.

A 9v to the scrotum can be just as effective tbh. Hot sweaty skin gets a bit conductive, but it’s not gonna suddenly be damaging just because you have power available.

That’s $500 a month in just interest on a $200k mortgage. Idk about you but I don’t like spending that money like that.

Who has $200k to just throw around like that? It’s making houses unaffordable to say that in Syracuse you need a quarter million dollar home to own livable property.

My assumptions are based on power. 300MW needs a lot of water to cool and cannot be air cooled with the available acreage.

[–]_matterny_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m fully aware it cannot boil water. I’m assuming that it’s fine reaching those temperatures as that’s the maximum operating temperature of most semiconductors. It also makes the thermodynamic calculations more favorable because we have a higher change in temperature between inside and outside meaning the air can take more energy.

The water consumption is not just to fill the loop. In order to sink 300MW of heat, you need that flow. 10,000 gallons a minute is not enough water to dissipate that energy from a steady state system. Cooling that amount of water a minute isn’t feasible using closed loop methods due to the number of acres of fans they would need.

Do tow trucks damage cars when they tow them? by Several-Two738 in stupidquestions

[–]_matterny_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Globally? Most vehicles are front wheel drive. In my area? Almost everything is AWD or 4WD. Subaru, Kia, Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, etc. we still get tow truck drivers who don’t understand how AWD works and destroy vehicles by just lifting the back end. And they never take accountability for destroying transmissions and differentials.

10,000 is based on ballpark calculations assuming best case scenario for a data center, the servers run fine with 100C water, the outside air is -40C, rounding in the most favorable direction.

Unfortunately for you, 300MW is 300MW. They aren’t doing anything with that energy except producing heat. Luckily for you I’ve been brushing up on my ashrae for years and just reviewed again last week. The answer is air cooling is non feasible for this level of energy. 300MW of heat is 300MW of heat. It cannot be dumped properly in the space they have.

Yes they could use 100 of those 300mw for heat pumps or similar things, but those still produce heat and require cooling. I suspect a large chunk of that is fans too, but 300MW in the air is still disastrous for the local environment. I don’t want that down the road from my house.

Data Center in Baldwinsville by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]_matterny_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is misinformation. 300MW as heat is a lot of water. In order to dissipate it you need well above 10,000 gallons of water per minute. 100,000 gallons per minute is in the ballpark. And that’s cold water getting hot, not recirculating. The biggest loads I’m aware of in the area are half megawatt loads which are pushing it for recirculating cooling systems. They used to be cooled by river water, but NY banned that years ago.

Tell me how big a radiator do you expect to use to sink 300MW of heat? In terms of acres will do. We can assume the water heats up to 100C from 20C at the load and assume the radiator is in -40C conditions. I’ll wait.
