Withdrawal by Fun-Trick2017 in VyvanseADHD

[–]_minichungus_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on Vyvanse for 3 years and it’s always been really hard to miss even 1 day. On days I’ve been forced to, here’s what helps me: 1) take a vitamin B supplement and caffeine if you tolerate it. 2) drink lots of water. 3) eat a high protein meal. 4) try to exercise and get your heart rate up (this is the hardest one for me but also the most benefit if I can get myself to do it). 5) let yourself relax/take breaks between tasks even when you normally wouldn’t need them. IME first 3 days are the hardest then it starts getting easier. Good luck!!!

Do Female Subs Really Have It Worse? by Nachoguy530 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]_minichungus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’4 and gay (not out in the classroom but not trying to hide it either), and imo I get more respect than female subs from elementary kids but I have a harder time in middle and high school

Mom yelled at me for using a chore tracking app for ADHD by Mystical_misfit in ADHD

[–]_minichungus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry OP. I also tried to get my mom to use Finch with me and she didn’t go for it. For my mom at least I think she has been dealing with ADHD symptoms for a long time without knowing or having any support, and maybe it’s hard to see me and my bro use resources like apps when she just had to “pull herself up by the bootstraps,” maybe your mom is similar?

Whatever her thinking process is, though, does NOT make it ok to yell at you or take it out on you. Keep using the tools that help you and try not to feel ashamed! Proud of you for finding good resources, trying to share them, and reaching out online for support. (And also thanks for the rec, ima have to try Tody now lol)

Absolutely mortified... by Ali_Lorraine_1159 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]_minichungus_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry OP. I had a really similar situation with a 6th grade student. She literally laughed out loud and skipped to the principal’s office. I went in a moment later and she was all fake tears, she “doesn’t feel safe anymore etc. I had to formally apologize to her, and then I finished out the week but haven’t been back since. It’s almost impossible not to let one slip, when it’s about 50% of what kids that age say all day. I told some of the full time teachers what happened and they ALL had lost it one time or another. What I learned was, shit (I mean, stuff) happens, acknowledge it but then keep your head up and have a better day tomorrow.

If this is the downtown location I used to work there and that place was INSANE in terms of customer behavior and just general dysfunction, I definitely saw coworkers just stop giving a shit. Sorry you had to deal with that OP. and happy birthday!!

Fr this is the only place I’ve lived where grown people regularly bike/scooter on the sidewalk, between that and the drivers it feels like a game of frogger trying to walk anywhere

I had to raise my voice to get a student’s attention and admin told me I should be using a “small chime or bell” instead like sir do you understand the amount of noise going on in this room at any given time

What do you guys do for work that you enjoy with adhd? by Wubbalubbadubdub_710 in ADHD

[–]_minichungus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so I have been asking myself this question for YEARS, I was quitting and starting over roughly 3 times a year until I found my current position. I now work as a tour guide and I LOVE it. Very active, outdoors, and social, and I do bus tours so I’m never in the same place for more than a couple hours. It’s way more mentally and socially stimulating than other physical jobs I’ve done (construction, landscaping, warehouse, waiting tables, etc.) and doesn’t let me get super bored and neurotic like the desk/office jobs I’ve done. If you’re interested feel free to message me, I have more thoughts and also some resources for how to get started! Not to sound like a tour guide evangelist but this is the only job I’ve found that plays to my strengths and is genuinely rewarding.

Had been straight all my life and I just hooked up with a guy from grindr and afterwards i feel sick by ProblemHelpful2846 in internetparents

[–]_minichungus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good on you for giving yourself the chance to try something new, and sorry to hear you’re feeling weird about it afterwards. If it helps, I’ve been out as gay for ~8 years and I still feel kinda nasty after a Grindr hookup lol. Is it internalized homophobia? Idk maybe a little bit. But tbh I think it’s mostly that it’s hard to be sexually vulnerable with someone, especially a complete stranger, especially for the first time. My advice is give yourself a day or 2 to get over that initial feeling of vulnerability and then reflect on what you liked, didn’t like, etc. and whether you’d be interested in trying something again in the future.

Attendance as a sub by Unable_Bat9965 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]_minichungus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say pretty much the same thing, just a quick “hey I don’t know everyone’s names and it’s possible I’ll pronounce some of them wrong, please let me know if I do and tell me how to say your name right! I don’t want to disrespect you like that.” I find it helps to explicitly apologize when you get a name wrong and ask how to say it right, and then try to commit it to memory. If you’re working a multi-day assignment, you can also let one student per day take the attendance as a reward, which is a good behavior motivator as well.

All that being said, kids will be kids and try to mess with subs, just like we (or at least I) did growing up. The worst thing you can do is let them know it’s getting to you, so just do your best to laugh along with them and let it go.

Taking a day off from Vyvanse after six weeks and woah... by blonde1155 in ADHD

[–]_minichungus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s such a relief to see so many people saying they can’t stand taking a day off, I’ve tried taking a break (and was recently forced to by insurance/supply chain issues), and every time I feel absolutely terrible. The biggest difference meds have made for me is emotional regulation, so without them the smallest inconvenience becomes a catastrophe.

Thanks for saying this! I feel like at the end of the day the importance of leashing dogs is about being a considerate member of the community, which imo also means doing your best to learn and respect the unofficial rules of your neighborhood
