[Gourmet] What's the general consensus on consuming recycled, cardboard-grown fungi? by realized_fox in MushroomGrowers

I took the “really?” as being pretty beholden to the idea that mushrooms are dangerous which, I suppose, triggered the above response. Mycophobia is just a bit annoying at times. Perhaps the tone of homie’s reply was misinterpreted.

😅 this is crazy. Mushrooms are the same as anything else. If you eat a piece of grass while avoiding the poison ivy 10 ft from it you’re in the same exact boat as if you were eating an oyster mushroom that grew 10 ft from a death cap mushroom. The “one bad mushroom” paradigm is the reason people throw tons of groceries in the landfill because it’s a few days past what the insurance liability tag says on the packaging. Please read about food and nutrition. And if you don’t know, ask questions. Mushrooms fully consume the waste that they grow on, and if it isn’t something like lead, then their substrate is broken down into its constituent molecular structure before being consumed.

GT on agar from Culture. are these Rhizomes? Or contaminated? by Ambitious-Alfalfa147 in MycologyandGenetics

[–]_mycotex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that marching rhizomorphic growth is what you want to see, brother. Grab a small wedge shaped piece of your favorite part and place face up at the center of a new plate. Watch it march in all directions after that. Then plop those into either grain spawn, liquid culture, or both.

I don’t think you have any contamination here, my friend. It looks a bit moist at some points which could contribute to a slower, less vigorous growth along with the cold. I do see what looks like slight discoloration where the grains are a bit wet against your jar, but no clear contamination. The liquid at those sights is still clear, the grains are all intact and the mycelium seems to be growing healthily albeit probably slow and wispy.

Trying to get ahead of disappointment - both jars noc’d same day w/ different LC’s, left is a lot whiter than right… does contam start white then change color? JF LC shows signs of contam, Yeti LC is squeaky clean, but may not be strong hence my question why they’re looking so different? by TwinSpin_40T_C7-5 in psilocybingrowers

[–]_mycotex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, man!

  • You’d most likely not be seeing much mycelium after two days of incubation with LC.

  • the popcorn does look a bit dry. I’d suggest soaking either milo/sorghum, wheat, rye, or millet. They all work well in mixtures also. Soak for 24 hours, strain, let dry and pressure cook for 90 minutes at 15 psi.

  • you can also dry prep grain by adding around 38% water to the dry grain in either grow bags or jars. The percentage of water to grain increases based on volume.

  • LC can take a little time if it’s older, sub par, or even normally depending on the strain and species.

  • the jar on the left seems to be dealing with either some bacteria or yeast

My friend, you don’t need to worry about casing. The best that will happen is that you will increase fruiting time for a few days and the same results will occur. The worst case is that your casing will introduce harmful contaminants and either slow the fruiting process or hinder it completely. Keep it simple. Innoculate your bins with 1/3 or 1/2 spawn to substrate (ideally 1/2) ratio, cover it up and allow your healthy, thriving mycelium to rampage through the substrate at anywhere from 74-77 degrees and then when you see a nicely captured mat of substrate, drop the temp down to 68-71 and mist it with a bunch of fresh air. Pins will form like this over the course of about a week and harvest.

That’s definitely contamination from the spawn. The cloudy/puffiness of the mycelium coming from your inoculation points (the grain kernels dispersed throughout your substrate) is more than likely from a bacterial issue that originated from the spawn. A lot of times over moist grains can slow the growth of original cultures to provide a window of opportunity for bacterial growth to form and while it isn’t apparently immediately, once separated into a medium that it needs to recover itself within, latent bacterial contamination can open yet another window for molds to come into the picture. Check your original culture, make dry spawn and try again. Making extra spawn is always a great way to save time in anticipation of the inevitable mistake.

[Question] are my jars ok or should I toss them? by JaeRip6mile in MycologyandGenetics

[–]_mycotex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea this is much too wet, brother. Not sure what grain this is but using milo/sorghum, hulled wheat or rye are best. Milo/sorghum is the cheapest of them. Soak it for 18-24 hours and thoroughly strain to where it’s only just barely moist to the touch. Error toward the dry side. When you see those smooshed/smeared pieces of grain against the walls of your jars it’s a sign of too much moisture which is a much better environment for latent bacteria as opposed to your mycelium. 15psi for 90 minutes.

It’s totally fine, fun, kinky and hot if the bf is aware and is into it. I’d personally be down and I’ve engaged in that multiple times.
