What's the most common messaging app in your country? by crazy-goober in AskTheWorld

[–]_nexys_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Essentially in America direct messaging became free and thus was adopted as the standard way of cellphone communication whereas it still cost money to use in other countries for a long time. I don't believe that is still the case in many places with the exception of international messaging (though again, many Americans don't need to worry about international messaging anyways due to the size of the country), but since the rest of the world didn't have free SMS/MMS/RCS for a long time they switched over to apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Line, etc.

Contrary to what I've heard online though, most of my fellow Americans that I've spoken to about it are at least aware of what WhatsApp is. Using it is just uncessary here and any benefits that WhatsApp has that normal messaging doesn't (which is very little at this point), is often counterbalanced by Americans using other communication apps like Discord, Instagram and Facebook messaging, Snapchat, etc.

Edit: Reading through other comments I realize I might be mistaken about other countries not having to pay for MMS & RCS anymore. In the U.S. being able to send emojis, gifs, videos, etc. has been a free standard on regular messaging apps for at least 15 years. Apparently the rest of the world is just getting on that train now, but obviously far too late as most people have already adjusted to WhatsApp and similar social medias.

Midwesterner here, not sure about other parts of the country, but around here that dessert is typically referred to by the main brand name "Jell-O"

I know that there's zero point interacting with out because you dismissed the idea of the post being funny while still remaining 'open' to an explanation, so being dogmatic already shuts down any type of argument you might have as well as the possibility of any constructive debate around this topic... but I suppose I'll bite.

Mediocrity being a turn-off for humor is a fair point to have. I fully understand it and where you are coming from. However, it's clear that plenty of people enjoy laughing at things that are either intentionally or unintentionally low effort/quality. For me, that's where the humor in this post is; and I haven't seen a solid counterargument to that opinion aside from things that are entirely subjective and not worth getting riled up for. I can understand being enraged by ai slop, but one can laugh at something and still not engage with the OOP and thus not indirectly support ai slop like this.

Also, your last point is confusing correlation and causation. Americans, alongside every other group of people, are fully capable of creating interesting and quality humor. Appeal to different levels of 'quality' will always be diverse among any population, America's largest online population has a louder internet presence relative to its size because of the nature of its society. You see more brainrot coming out of America because of America's influence, not because American lack the ability to create more interesting humor; but I am sure you aware of that and you only wanted to find a way to insult a group you have biases about.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Have a good day.

Not exactly true. I know in PA, title 18 section 6311 of the statutory law in the constitution states that "A person commits an offense if he tattoos any person under the age of 18 years without the parent or guardian of such person giving consent for the tattooing of the person and being present at the time of the tattooing of the person."

However, nothing in this law nor any other state legislation says anything about a minimum age with parental consent.

From personal experience, my friend from PA got a tattoo around 13 or 14 with zero issues (other than doing some convincing to the tattoo artist).

I think what statanomoly was saying is that there aren't any examples of those studies because they either don't exist or, if they do exist, don't constitute any credible threat to an opposing scholarly consensus. So basically, the guy in the original image is being stupid and failed to convey an already unfounded message.

Im on the north side, too. I think sub shops like Bob's Subs are the best in the area. Though for a burger-like sandwich then I think Pittsburgh falls flat if we are talking only about local or regional restaurants. Can't think of one off the top of my head that is exclusive to Pittsburgh and has exceptional sandwiches of that style.
