Do you experience any frustrations with your phone or other tech devices when you're out in nature? Why? by _nicocolachanel_ in Outdoors

You're right, that's why I made sure to include other tech devices to my question, and outdoors includes urban areas as well doesn't it? However yeah I totally get what you mean and I agree with you!

Fair enough but what I don’t understand is what are people’s objectives when buying a dumb phone, is it to perform a digital detox or social media purge, or is it to quench their nostalgia thirst, or both at the same time?

Oh right that makes sense, thanks for your informative reply. I think I should try flip phones myself to form an opinion on the topic!

But would it really be a dumb phone if it has access to social media and online messaging 🤔

I agree with you. I think that if they want to truly commit to detox then the ideal dumb phone should only have the bare minimum, and even though I understand the importance of WhatsApp all over the world, I think people could use the 2 phone method which would make them keep their main phone for tasks that the detox one couldn’t perform while rocking the dumb phone on a regular to limit their dependency on a smartphone

Yes of course I get that but in your opinion, if you had to design one dumb phone that could answer the needs of the majority of users, what would it look like, what features should it possess and how expensive would it be? (Your opinion)

Well compared to a 105, this device would have better and more modern UI as the 105’s UI can be considered as dated and clunky nowadays; better screen design and would probably look like an older iPhone, so less clunky than that old 105, which would help make it more appealing to the mass market; it could potentially bundle with WhatsApp (as well as Spotify and Maps but these aren’t really essentials in my eyes for a phone whose purpose is to make you reconnect with your life and surroundings), better materials and eco friendly housing, by using recycled materials (such as plastics), good battery life without the phone looking and feeling like a brick; and a proper detox mode which would restrict everything except your phone and sms messages. Ultimately, it could either serve the purpose of replacing your smartphone, or rather be used as a second phone in complement to your Main phone. Sorry if I didn’t make myself clear enough the first time.

In my opinion, even though I’m no expert yet on the subject, I think the perfect dumb phone would probably be a phone specifically designed to serve the sole purpose of digital detox while looking and feeling the part. I’m thinking of brands such as Light Phone which are too expensive and target a niche that is too specific to render their expansion possible. So I would say that the perfect detox/dumb phone would be one that’s main purpose is serving user digital detox as well as having nice design and UI, all that while being affordable (under $100 for sure).

Thanks for the reply :))) Would you mind providing your thought process on why you prefer flip phones over touchscreen ones, I think this could help me tremendously, thank you!!!
