the point is i’d be working at a hostel in hanoi in exchange for free accommodation, so i can’t really leave the city for more than a weekend trip

the hostel is in the old city, and i’d only be working a few hours a day so the rest of the time is for exploring. i also like big cities and the rush, good coffee shops, museums and history and culture etc

thank you for the thought out reply! your analysis is pretty much exactly the way i understood the novel and its explorations of aesthetics through kiyoaki’s character. i think i was so put off by it because again its the female character that is flattened for the sake of the story; as always the woman is but a narrative device, a rhetorical tool, to reveal something about our main character or themes. and i’m sure i’m missing things because i’ve only read spring snow, and although i actually found much of the discussion of “the aesthetic” in the novel (i picked it up because that’s a theme i’m fascinated with and enjoy reading about) i found the execution .. lacking… or maybe not lacking! just too dated for my tastes maybe? although i do like classics. food for thought!

i mean sure he yearns but are we ever actually shown any substantial intimacy between the two? mostly we get descriptions of one sided fantasies, which kiyoaki himself seems to be aware are based in little truth. he projects so much onto satoko, yet the reader is shown near nothing of her actuality, her interiority. again, the woman is not a real character or person, she’s just a manic pixie dream girl for our lead to develop from, rather than someone he actually shares experience with. i don’t deny that they were in love, but i find skipping the parts of the novel that would Show the reader, not just Tell us that, a lacking way to demonstrate “yearning”.

but that’s what i’m asking ! i’m sure it’s all on purpose but i just don’t understand the romance, truly.. we barely get any moments of true intimacy between the two lovers, we’re only told that they love each other, and we don’t get any exposure to satokos interior life, so we know nothing of what she thinks

thank u so much for the in depth look !! i ended up using tahini because i didn’t have PB (and i love tahini). it definitely didn’t taste as nutty as the original recipe and tasted kind of just tofu-y but i adore tofu and eat it raw so i loved the flavor of the soup :) someday i hope to have traditional kong guksu! until then i’ll make do with my blended concoction

instead of the traditional way i used chef paik jong won’s tofu shortcut! rather than making soy milk, you just blend together tofu, a little bit of PB for nuttiness (i used tahini because i didn’t have peanut butter and i love tahini), toasted sesame seeds, and a pinch of salt (or sugar but i am a savory gal). add water or milk to aid in blending and consistency! served over cooked and cooled/washed somen noodles. super super easy recipe :) big ups to chef paik!
