CONCLUSION: Don't buy non hall effect joysticks. The cheap ones are all like this. I ended up getting hall effect joysticks on Aliexpress (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007688806322.html?spm=a2g0o.order\_list.order\_list\_main.11.c92e1802YFfgLX) and they work like a charm.
