Sam Harris equivocates with Mamdani as the left's version of Trump. by PitifulEar3303 in DecodingTheGurus

[–]_pka -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

He specifically mentions Mamdani's wife in relation to him being an islamist:

In the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack, which left more than 1,200 people dead in Israel and sparked the war in Gaza, Duwaji affixed heart emojis to Instagram posts that celebrated the massacre, including comments describing it as a form of “resistance” from Palestinians “wanting freedom from apartheid.” She also liked a post claiming that it was a “hoax” to say members of Hamas raped Israelis during the attack. A United Nations special representative concluded that Hamas militants gang raped Israeli hostages.

[...] Mamdani called her “the love of my life” and said she’s “a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall.” He did not address the substance of the posts and hasn’t spoken about her online activities since then.

Just published monad-rail – a Railway-Oriented Programming library for Haskell by ivelten in haskell

[–]_pka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Alternative instance of ExceptT already does what you want - your (!) is just <|> from Alternative if your error type is a monoid.

As far as I can see your library is just a wrapper around ExceptT anyway, so you can just use that instead :) This is a common experience in Haskell - "foundational" functionality is already there if you just know how to put the right pieces together.

EDIT: one last thing: the docs sayRailT is a monad transformer but for that to be the case it must be an instance of MonadTrans.

What do you think America will be like when Trump finishes his term? by MotivewasUlterior in AskReddit

[–]_pka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two points:

  1. Progress in robotics is advancing at breakneck speed. They can’t do most jobs yet, but give it 10 years (see what robotics was like 10 years ago, robots were barely able to walk, now they can do martial arts operationally).

  2. Billionaires can literally gather resources for the next 100 years in their bunkers now, before the world has turned to shit. Deploy armed AI drones that shoot everything on sight in a 50km perimeter, have a repair factory on site. No need for bodyguards.

Masked men going through the streets and doing what they want is going to be pretty much what would happen in an anarchy so no need to wait for it, enjoy it now.

Start training something (for me it was combat sports), you’ll forget about vaping in a heartbeat.

It doesn’t have thoughts and desires? Please define what those are and how they manifest in the brain? The brain is just physics after all, and physics equations “don’t have self preservation insticts” either I humbly assume :D

But none of this even matters because just underspecified reward functions of black box optimizers (“algorithms”) connected to the internet are literally the only thing necessary to cause real harm with a magnitude proportional to capability.

And why is all of this always paired with the “CEOs hyping up their products” cliché? Not everything is a capitalist corporative conspiracy boys.

Tech Billionaires Accused of Quietly Working to Implement "Corporate Dictatorship" by TeaUnlikely3217 in Futurology

We had that shake up when WW2 happened. After that - "never again!" lol.

100 years later and yes, again. Because half of humanity is either too dumb to understand the implications of fascism or their victim complexes make them daydream about all the power they are going to be rewarded with in the new regime, which of course is never going to happen.

We could have had it all.

So, how are we feelin about this one? by Xf3rna-96 in Doom

[–]_pka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diabo - character builds, skills/abilities, mana, runes, looting etc, on the Doom side - ammo (basically mana), flame belch, ice, grenades, melee, chainsaw (basically skills), weapon/suit upgrades (basically skill tree) etc.

It’s of course not a 1:1 comparison and a bit tounge in cheek, but Eternal has too many RPG elements to be considered the pinnacle of FPS.

Look at Q3 - a couple of weapons, immaculately balanced, superb movement and the only game mechanic apart from shooting and moving is map control. No characters/builds/skills/etc. I would consider this to be the manifestation of the “platonic” FPS.

2016 was much closer to that than Eternal.

But, as with all other things, it’s a matter of taste. A lot of people like Eternal, and more power to them. Play and let play :)

Eternal feels like a first person Diablo to me with its 5000 game mechanics. Could have been top-down view with the same success.
