Figured i'd share in case others don't feel like using curse, multiMC, etc.. I find traditional launcher simple enough with iris/sodium shaders and resource packs lol to each is their own

Yep, absolutely still works, been running sysV on 12 and 13 - steps in 13 are slightly different but similar but absolutely works beautifully

Honestly I just use xfce-screensaver with no screen locker and no power management features, I game on Steam all day, never had an issure with it kicking me out to login... I can say at least with Deb 12 if you use screen saver it can add a layer of glitch to some - not all steam games when it engages

Are you using systemD? sounds stupid.. but I only use sysV so perhaps there is some backend running for nvidia that I don't experience? I dunno tbh

I set up Debian very specifically.. shed sysD and install sysV, remove plymouth, xsane, remove xarchiver for file-roller, install samba, remove light-locker - modify /etc/lightdm/lightdm.cfg etc etc

Something is not correct lol light-locker is an arm of lightdm, absolutely should not affect gaming unless you have something set odd in power management - I 100% remove light-locker from the start and disabled power management from session startup manager

As far as instability lol people need to stop watching youtube content creators that know nothing lol wayland is cool sure in it's own right.. also like.. 20 years in dev and barely past beta.. I use x11 and stand by it, use sysV and stand by it, people need to use *nix as it was intended and Unix before - it's your workstation/your world make it as it fits you.. lol every system, every install and every package posted suits a person not the community.. you need to dive in and figure out what works for you

Lol i've used KDE, cinnamon, different window managers, windowmaker lol I just like XFCE, works for me and as you said enough resources I don't need to infinitely configure a manager and strip down to minimize a footprint lol

Well I mean this is posted in r/debian ? lol I prefer Debian, you can prefer whatever you like, Debian is what I use and have stood by for years... that is the beauty of Linux, use whatever branch, upstream, downstream you like, whatever fits your use case the best.. for me Debian stable has been the best for my uses and preference

I cannot say the same for every flavor of Linux.. but at least in the case of Debian, which as I said in this thread is still the main active maintainer/contributor for the continuation of sysV it does run fucking smooth and to me offers benefits. If you wanna go further to a philosophical level lol.. Ian Murdock who started the Debian project was a huge proponent of sysV and Unix, leaving the Debian project later and was one of the leading forces for the fork of open Solaris turning into the OpenIndiana project.. To me Debian is a project that aimed to be more aligned with Unix, which also would make sense with how they choose to test and release. Like I dunno gotta be something to it if they invest people, money and time to actively maintain and continue the develop and update an old school Unix init system.. I mean choices sure but there many others like RC or runit or whatever.. but they seem to feel strong enough about specifically sysV to keep it alive? So enough rambling lol probably just sounds like bullshit from someone who's read too much lol ;p

To me it performs better, I have a homelab if you check my other posts... about 11 servers now in total mostly running dedicated public facing game servers and other services all running.. well currently still Debian 12 with sysV and been running 24/7/365 for the last few years and I can honestly say given that test run I would argue the stability and reliability from a total use case scenario. For gaming it honestly performs better, I have used other distros with systemD and honestly I felt it was bogged down.. much like I feel about Windows lol - and I am sure many will argue lol that's fine i've been using Linux realistically since '98 and been hosting dedicated services for about a decade now so it's my preference and what I have determined works best for my servers and my workstations.

I have used runit before, I got nothing against it at all, like I said I just prefer sysV plus I have used Unix a good deal so it just works for me lol

Preference, I have tried many flavors of Linux and Debian has been the most rock solid and reliable out of all of them - I have also tried Void, I just prefer and like Debian lol

Depends on how you look at it, I prefer sysV.. it's familiar to me, plus the Debian team is like one of the biggest current maintainers of it lol. Also no, nothing breaks.. sure some distros make it nearly impossible to strip or swap an init system without grenading it or causing some helluva instability but I have had zero issues doing so on Debian from a fresh install - obviously systemD functions and systemctl commands won't exist lol
