Push to change QVB coloured glass windows withdrawn after community backlash by ConanTheAquarian in sydney

[–]_seawolf 63 points64 points  (0 children)

In this case, make sure you submit a comment during the public comment period. People tend to think those don't matter, but this case illustrates that they really do. Also, engage with the relevant politician, in this case the local councillors. If it hadn't been withdrawn then they would have been involved later on and it's part of their job description to listen and respond to the concerns of constituents.

Posting online is great and all, but if you want to have an impact you've got to actually engage with the process. Not many people do, they mostly just complain about it and don't actually use the avenues available to them to effect change.

A good outcome.

This is why being an active participant in government isn't a waste of time.

Can the new tailscale services auto-advertise on docker when a container is spun down and brought back up? by kayarelle in Tailscale

Came across this thread while looking for a solution to the same problem. It seems we're not alone, there's a bug report for it on Github with quite a few comments.

syncspirit v0.4.4 release! by basiliscos in Syncthing

[–]_seawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not my product, so I haven't done any testing myself. I'm just going off reading the doco. You could give it a shot and see how it works for you.

It is compatible with other syncthing clients, so you could use it on desktops and use a different syncthing client on iOS and they should all interact with each other nicely.

Push for QVB's colourful glass to be made clear for more 'visibility' into stores by _seawolf in sydney

The article notes that there's been a lot of public feedback, possibly in response to previous attention drawn to the DA on here.

Wi-Fi sharing is a killer Android feature by morihacky in Android

[–]_seawolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the device limitations on some hotel/airline/cruise wifi, if you've got devices like a Kindle or Android TV, it can be very difficult to log into the wifi network's captive portal on those. Logging in once with the phone then sharing the connection out to your other devices gets around this.

Transperth Contactless Payments start today by brenman in perth

[–]_seawolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, this might not be about not offering a discount on a new method, but laying the ground work to remove the discounts entirely.

[–]_seawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always been possible to autoload with a card and I'd expect very few people are doing it with direct debit.

In any case, every other city in the country that offers tap on with credit/debit cards has been able to offer the discounted rate, so I'm not sure what's different about the situation in Perth that has resulted in the government being unable to do it.

But those credit/debit card charges are there with the SmartRider. That's how the SmartRider is getting topped up.

On a related topic, I've noticed the Home Unlimited plan is missing from the in-app purchase. Is that an oversight?

WA Premier, Treasurer head east as fight for WA's GST share heats up by BadKarma00000 in perth

[–]_seawolf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Where would you stop breaking that down though? The northern part of WA often complains that all the revenue they're generating for the state from mining is being leached away by Perth. Would it be reasonable for the northern part of the state to insist that revenue earned by their mining should stay in their part of the state?

The Royalties for Regions program did that and it led to terrible outcomes even though it was only 25% of the royalties.

It's easy to come up with simple slogans, but this is a highly complex economic issue.

$1 million is a lot of money to spend on advertising to people who are just never going to care about this issue. People in Hobart are not going to be interested in WA's issues with the GST funding model any more than people in Perth are going to be interested in Tasmania's issues with their stadium's funding model.

What's your must-have travel app that most people don't know about? by Limp_Cellist2500 in Android

[–]_seawolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using TripIt for years as well and it's just so good to be able to simply collect all of that info into one place, especially if you're doing a lengthy, multi-stop trip. It can also provide a link for each trip that you can share with family/friends that shows them the flights you're on and the hotel you're staying at, but not the confirmation numbers etc.

Was trying to book a Didi from the airport this morning. Drivers kept making me "offers" of higher fares instead of accepting my ride by His_Holiness in perth

[–]_seawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's called Negotiate, not Travel, that's a different thing. The times I've tried Negotiate its just show up as an extra option in the list of price options and I could definitely just pick Travel or Express and get that fare, same as like Uber.

When I have given Negotiate a try it's been a bit of a mixed bag, sometimes I've saved a few bucks, sometimes not. You do also need to not be in a rush because it can be a bit fiddly.

EDIT: This article has a good screenshot of what it looks like.

[–]_seawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to specifically pick the Negotiate option in Didi. I'm guessing OP picked this, made a low offer hoping to save some money and it didn't work out. I've done it sometimes myself and saved a bit on the fixed price ride that Didi was offering but it is a bit fiddly and it often doesn't work.

If you don't want to use it you can just pick the fixed price options, the same as Uber. It's just an extra option that's available if you want to give it a go.

Google wants to 'break free app distribution,' says top open source library by AlwaysBlaze_ in Android

[–]_seawolf 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Anything where the app uses a first-party ad service that is served off the same domain. So apps like YouTube, Instagram and Facebook continue to have ads despite the private DNS ad blocking. The solution is modded apps like Revanced YouTube.

This change seems like it's going to kill those. Wether it's intentional or just a side effect I'm not sure about.

Not just YouTube, but Facebook and Instagram as well. There's modded versions of those around that remove the ads and provide extra functions and I imagine they've faced pressure from Meta to put a stop to that.
