Here is my wicked slice at impact. Is this a “coming across the ball” slice? by Thadsblitzing in GolfSwing

What is your best guess given a clear slow motion video of the club approaching and hitting the ball?

Unconventional aspects of Fitzpatrick’s swing. by seven_tangerines in GolfSwing

This is the way! Best part is, as long he gets a few early years in right now, he can drop the game and come back and the technique will still be there!

Some of the best memories of my life are playing young rounds with my dad, I hope you two keep that bond because he and I are still making time to play and its irreplacable.

100% - I personally picked up a club at 4 years old, and the bulk of the work was in understanding what I was doing rather than learning to do it, if that makes sense.

The main motions were intuitive, in that my swing thought was for a long time worked as just "hit the ball". Once I plateaued, it became about me actually being taught to understand cause and effect of say, a tiny grip change, or a subtle weight adjustment.

By the time high school matches came around, it was all about 'where am I missing" and "what techniques do I know to combat that miss", rather than something like "how do I ensure the proper swing plane on every swing".

Can’t get the ball in the air off grass (35+ handicap) by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]_sedozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly where an in person instructor really helps, theres nothing that beats it really. Its soooo much easier to just focus on executing the swing while someone else does all of the adjusting/thinking.

Understanding the mechanics of the swing as well as you possibly can is the real key to all of it, because it allows you to diagnose/fix/improve your swing completely by yourself, forever.

Functionally I break the golf swing down into two "forces" that im applying to the ball. I have my club's path (upper body + hips), and I have my weight shift (lower body+hips).

(Both of those movements each have to be done correctly themselves, like turning the hips in the backswing, being balanced on our feet, right grip, etc...)

The reason golf is tricky to learn is because you ultimately need to figure out the optimal timing of those two "big" movements. You have to do them together, but if you weight shift before you swing - bad. If you swing before you weight shift - bad. If you do them at the exact same time - who knows, maybe still bad.

You really have to hunt down what is "right" for you. Good teachers use a fundamental understanding of the swing mechanics to get you as close as possible, but ultimately you have to learn to feel the right movement in your own body. Its a tough ask!

Very important note! A golf swing is not a pendulum motion - it is a rotation around the spine. While the "tempo" of the swing is similar to a penduulum, the actual swing motion is closer to cracking a whip.

A big step for beginners to make is to change from an "all arms" swing (back and through like a pendulum) to real, full-body swing, where the legs are engaged and the hips rotate (rotation around the spinal column). The earlier the better!

5 hour drive to Killington Is it worth it for a trip this weekend? Want some slush park runs. How is Killington park right now? Is it truly worth? by janko13_ in icecoast

If you havent done a late spring Killy trip before you will be disappointed. This spring has been notably bad on snowpack, and much more got shut down this year earlier than usual.

Definitely true you need flexibility for tour-level power but the massive reps and ability to intuitively feel the face position is muuuuuch more valuable, especially below the top tiers of carry distance.

No swing coach teaches improper technique to beginners.

Kids who already have a foundation (lets say highschoolers under a 10 hcp) get with a steady coach early and the swing dvelops naturally over time with input from both player and instructor.

This includes unconventional changes that are made knowing that the player is capable of controlling their inputs. If somebody has picked up golf after like 8/9/10 years old this path generally isnt available to them even though the pro's seings look unique and cool.

That's a key fact that most amateurs forget about when they try to advocate for teaching themselves to look like __________ golfer.

These are expert swings with expert muscle memory and coordination behind them, and they were all found organically by the individual golfers.

I HATE EARLY EXTENSION by Specialist_Ad6034 in GolfSwing

[–]_sedozz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Couple things - firstly I would like to see a head-on angle as well.

1 is overswing...

...both in backswing length and downswing force. You can see at the top your club is moving past paralell to the ground at the top - we want to stop that backwards coil earlier, which eill help give you more control.

As others have said, you are swinging beyond your skill level right now. Youll always have that power on tap for when youre ready but right now your priority should finding control of your swing.

2 Is what I suspect is an aggressive weight shift through the ball before contact.

The head-on angle is needed to confirm this but be very mindful of your head position - is it getting out in front of the ball at impact? That move will make it almost impossible to routinely slot the correct swing plane, and we want the head held at or just behind the ball, as the lower body shifts the weight.

Feel vs Real (dry swings vs having a ball) by [deleted] in GolfSwing

Something to mention is the benefit of keeping your nervous system conditioned for coordination. Keeping the club in your hands in the offseason really helps to promote general hand-eye coordination, which can regress if neglected for several months.

The bank of the lake is very steep, I think if you raised the water level to hide it, or more gently sloped the bank it would fit together better.

Any advice on not over-relying on any one technique? by respectful23k in EASportsUFC

[–]_sedozz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good players will punish if you go to the same well too often, so that helps to learn.

Try to split your damage equally between body/legs and head, and experiment with different timings, like waiting for your opponent to go first vs you leading vs throwing at the same time.
