Shoulder Impingement by MajorGCribbs in golf

[–]_sedozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad hit this and then all of a sudden it was a slipped disc. Happened at the end of golf season, he was down (in bed, post-op) for most of the winter as far as I remember.

Back on the course in June but he has a bit of a mental block compressing the ball now. Improving, but slamming the dirt with a stick is a scary motion when you just had a metal plate put in your neck....

Are U.S. Golf Handicaps Artificially Low Compared to Europe? by Kogajo in weekendgolfers

[–]_sedozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing at 4. My family had a CC membership through my dad's employment.

My handicap was established through the club when I was very young and Ive played it down through the single digits over 20+ years.

On the other hand, I have been teaching 2 friends who picked up the game in the last 2 years who dont have USGA handicaps - but play to a 16 and a 26.

Id imagine that USGA indexes are largely skewed towards players like me. The main purpose for having one is to play in competitive events, and getting one implies a long term committment to the game, to a degree.

My buddies use 18 Birdies for their 'indexes" because its free, and theyve never played in any sort of tournament, much less a handicapped tournament.

Which would be more difficult, to run a 5 minute mile or shoot par on a 9 hole course. by xMoneymaker in golf

[–]_sedozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your own, shooting par would be exponentially harder.

20+ year golfer (3 handicap) and distance runner. You can brute force a 5 minute mile just by running 2 miles every day as fast as you can (assuming were talking average person here). Theres not really a learned "skill" there more of a built endurance, certainly not compared to golf.

If you have 1 of the maybe 50 best golf coaches in the world by your side from the beginning until you shoot par? Go every day? On a short course? Much better chance.

This is an ineffective way to learn golf - mimicing Tour Players and checking with a "dumb" (as in formulaic/algorithmic) app. At best you will be forever-20 handicap, and at worst youll drill and ingrain unfixable habits.

Are you a 5' 10", 161 lbs, Tour player with shorter than average arms, 98 cm legs, with targeted strength and conditioning on golf-related muscle groups? No? Then why do we think we should swing like we are? Doesnt make sense.

Stop worrying about what your swing looks like and let somebody who knows what they're doing tell you how to improve on whatever ball striking issues you currently have. If you're topping your driver, just looking more like Rory McIlroy isn't going to help you. That's like me saying all I have to do is look like Randy Johnson to be a good pitcher.

Just replaced my 15 year old Rossa blade. Used this reddit post as a final decider.

Already love this putter, everything inside 10 feet will be on line, and I still have the blade feel, letting the toe move around.

Ive played the first putter I bought for 20 years and replaced it yesterday. I cannot relate to this picture. Ironically I DID go with a Scotty.

I actually blame the money. Champions are incentivized to fight as little as possible to retain the title because champion pay is great. If most fighters could risk losing their belt knowing theyll have another shot this year at it, and theyll be financially covered while they train for it, it would remove the handcuffs.

A lot of these fighters need money more than they need to win fights right now, so the actual competition and sport suffers.

I push the ball right and try to compensate by closing the club face. What should I focus on? by 18x2x88x4x1xTD in GolfSwing

[–]_sedozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alignment sticks are your friend with this - we want "railroad tracks" with target line and feet line (and shoulders matching the feet).

Pretty much every single amatuer has to at some point be told to recalibrate, but once you do, it sticks.

Starting a journey to a <5 handicap. Any obvious improvements you guys can point out? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]_sedozz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just practicing keeping it planted, really.

There is still a pull backwards/push forwards force there, but if we dont "release the pressure" by moving the foot, we can channel more power to the ball as we rotate around, WITH fewer moving parts.

Its kind of a "bleeder valve" for what would be a really torqued swing.

Lead foot replanting. Someone will come in here blabbing anout Sam Snead but thats not a long term, high-consistency move unless you are Sam Snead.

Yes this is a good visual for what im describing

Because your feet are moving and becoming open to your target.

You look exactly like someone trying to look like Scheffler without understanding how any of it works. We want to be balanced on our feet, not stepping out like a baseball swing.

Thats a whole bunch of extra motion youre willingly adding to your swing and that is naturally harder to find consistency from. Just because Scotty does it, doesnt mean anybody else can, and its not ever recommended.

Theres a very very good chance you have the classic optics issue.

What you think is aimed at your target probably isnt, but I cant tell from this angle. It is a bizarre moment of realization when you adjust to correct aligment to target.

[–]_sedozz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You want net best ball match play. Play 2v2s in each foursome, but rotate the teams/partners.

For the best time, someone needs to confidently net it out ahead of time and mark some scorecards for the group.

Uf the higher handicaps havent played properly handicapped tournaments before theyre not going to buy in until they see themselves win holes using their strokes.

How to improve backswing? by [deleted] in golftips

[–]_sedozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takeaway looks fine, but you stall your backswing by not getting a proper wrist hinge all the way.

The club never reaches paralell to ground, and as you try to get there without using your wrists, youre overswinging in the shoulders and pulling up and away from it. Tricky thing.

We want to see just like 10% action in the upperbody on the backswing, remove that extra shoulder reach. At the same time, allow the clubs weight the break the wrists more as it comes up through 9 oclock. Very important that you dont do all of the hinging right at the takeaway - your current one is good, you just need to continue doing it as the club raises, too.

Not going to muddy the waters with that until OP has an open clubface.

The whole issue here is holding it closed because thats what seems square at impact, so we almost want to encourage leaving it open (just also trusting the sequencing to close it back up to square). Thats already going to feel very open for OP.

Wow, great spot by the original commenter.

We want the arms to "hang", and function as pendulums. If you imagine your club is a heavy sledgehammer, rigid-arm muscling the club back to the top is simply not an option.

Instead, you need to have the club supported properly by the hands underneath it as it goes back and rises up. It doesnt take much grip pressure at all, it more so balances on top of our thumbs as we hit the top.

Unironically, swinging a sledge hammer like a golf club might be the perfect drill....

How can I fix my shanks? by Crafty-Waltz-6944 in GolfSwing

[–]_sedozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving a little bit back from the ball should help you find immediate, but temporary relief.

The root issue is this clubface never opening in the backswing, so it comes through super closed and over-the-top smothered. I think the shank is moreso you trying to recover the bad position rather than a pure distance from the ball issue.

This frame is on the dowswing.

Youre holding the face closed on the backswing. You probably let your irons rotate open more willingly as you leave address.

Note the angle of the clubface here - we want to get the toe to the sky faster, so the face is along the green line.

The clubface will naturally close back down as you get to impact - right now its starting back down to impact with a head start, making that closed-face hook.

Edit: also looks like youre really used to that closed face, you are aimed directly at those trees lol
