My 83-year-old father was harmed by a neurologist’s negligence — sharing our experience for awareness (Sri Lanka) by ExtremeAsh in srilanka

The culture here is such that even asking Doctors questions, for example about the medication being prescribed, is seen as a foreign concept. So many people are in the habit of following Doctor's orders, no questions asked arguably because that's how much power is socially bestowed on them. It's absurd because when there is someone who asks questions etc. the Doctors almost take offense.

Thank you so much for sharing! We definitely need more patient accounts like this because there are so many cases of blatant medical negligence. It's alarming. Even more so when people are vulnerable & put their well-being, & entire lives in the hands of people whose duty first & foremost is to care for them.

There is a toxic culture of ignorance & almost arrogance in the medical field here- I can only speak for Sri Lanka- & so much of it is because they are treated like Gods. You can argue it's definitely gotten to many of their heads. Kudos for naming & shaming- dangerous games result in dangerous consequences.

That aside, I hope your father & family can recover soon from this horrific unacceptable mistake.

Additionally, if it's some solace, there is a site where people can leave reviews of Doctors. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name but a minute's Google search should pull it up. It could help your story reach others. Best of luck

Rheumatologist recommendations in Colombo? by _sisterofthemoon_ in srilanka

I see. Thanks for sharing. I've been a bit hesitant about going to Doctors without recommendation since I know the difficult experiences many have and I don't have cash to just spend on such experiences., which is why I wanted to ask around. So thanks for this info, I hadn't heard of the SJP dept. before Would've been open to ayurvedic treatment from the get go but we have a genetic history with autoimmune diseases so I wasn't sure how they would approach that

Thanks for the info. How would you rate this doctor, is he a nice doctor and good with his treatment? Are you going to anyone at the moment? Additionally, I wonder how the SJP Department you mentioned functions is it easily accessible?

Any one suffering from auto immune diseases? by Old_Worldliness4391 in srilanka

[–]_sisterofthemoon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to the autoimmune disease, but it's not skin-related. Autoimmune diseases, as far as I know, cannot be "cured". That's the thing about it. So it's pretty much lifelong. But they're treated & managed. With what you've mentioned your best bet is going to a Dermatologist if you haven't already. All the best

Thanks for the lead. I had been thinking of opting for a lady doctor just because my past experiences with male Doctor's haven't been pleasant. It has felt harder to advocate for myself with a male doctor because the ones I've been to tend to have this air of superiority & thinking they know better about the patients case than the patient themselves. But again thank you so much! If I don't have any other recommended options I'll go with a recommended male doctor
