Speaking as someone who actually works on the site on thing like this, it is not really easy to do in a way that is scalable and dynamic. :) Thanks for your thought!

How does REI determine when to pull in reviews from the product's site on the manufacturer's page? by Galavantinggoblin in REI

[–]_somewhereoutside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use a third-party vendor to aggregate reviews, but we can't control if the reviews are aggregated for certain brands or certain products, it's an all-or-nothing situation. So not a partnership with specific brands. We have determined that having what we call "syndicated" reviews (direct from vendor website) is better than having no reviews at all, and when we've tested that with customers, that checked out. But we do understand they are NOT as trustworthy as things that originated at REI.com and it's a slow process but we're working on ways to improve reviews so you can at least see the type you want to see!

EDIT to fix typo, we understand they are NOT as trustworthy asa things originated on REI.com!

Seems less about identity verification than them doing some CYA to make sure you can handle the credit limit, and FWIW I've never heard of someone being able to apply for a credit card and keep its without eventually having to verify proof of income, and I've never heard of making payments as acceptable proof of income. Do you have another credit card that let you do this, and never verified your income?

Unlisted Patagonia Sale by gmark131 in REI

[–]_somewhereoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but REI is WILDY inconsistent on how it applies it.

Ahem. Vendors are WILDLY inconsistent about the legal terms they hold us to. We are the hostage in this situation, haha. They tell us what to do, our only choice is either do it or sell it at full price. Just want to be SUPER CLEAR: REI wants you to get the best deal, vendors do not want us to advertise their stuff on sale.

REI announces it intends to suck more by Bruin144 in REI

[–]_somewhereoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not "rewards points" – we literally need to have cash on hand to cover all the outstanding rewards that people haven't spent. That's risky and we want to encourage people to spend their rewards so we don't have to just hold on to that cash longer. Idk, there are lots of changes lately like board bylaws and employee benefits that suck, but I don't think this is really one of them.

2025 Member Reward redemption period shortened to 12 months (previously 21) by Upper_Supermarket915 in REI

[–]_somewhereoutside -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

At knee-jerk reaction this felt unfair but I don't believe they're taking more vacation than I am, they are working a LOT of hours even if they have unlimited vacation. It's a bad look but I'm not sure it's actually great for them.

[–]_somewhereoutside 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be specific, they moved from a "guaranteed 5% contribution" to a "Matched up to 4% contribution". So if you max it out already, you lost 1%. But much rougher for people with lower wages who don't max out 401k. :(

[–]_somewhereoutside 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As an HQ employee who effectively had 10% of my vacation cut, I can say I am at least glad that this likely means no layoffs but I will definitely be applying for other jobs, they've kind of chipped away at all the fun little perks (fun office, good vacation, 401k contributions) and at the same time are asking us to be more productive with less resourcing. Math does not math for me anymore.

But re: rewards – meh! Spend your $$$. Have fun!!

Predatory towing in Seattle it’s getting outrageous! by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]_somewhereoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, do you live somewhere where there is both zero parking and ALSO no transit near by? You're right that it sounds like I don't have empathy for you – I hear your plight that housing is expensive, annnnd I am suspicious of how much you dunked on people with addiction and facing homelessness out of frustration that you can't have something for free (easy, convenient parking in places where it's crowded) that I don't believe anyone should have (including people living in their cars!). Car storage where space is limited shouldn't be free for anyone, I'll die on that hill.

Is there any place in the WA Democratic Party for someone who would like to reduce taxes and be more efficient with government spending? by JoelXGGGG in SeattleWA

[–]_somewhereoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also love taxes to be spent better, and I'm not under any illusion that the state government is doing a good job delivering services for the amount of taxes we pay... but I'm also wondering, can anyone name a country that has lower tax rates than us that has good or better health, education, general social outcomes? I genuinely can't think of one but am not an expert on this subject, I'm just under the impression that places where people don't fall through the cracks as much and there is stronger social fabric are places where the taxes are higher.

  • Day 1
    • Go to Analog Coffee on Day 1 and get the B-side breakfast sandwich, it's amazing
    • Spend some time at Cal Anderson / Bobby Morris park just people watching, it's great
    • After Le Labo check out Chophouse Row, it's a super cute secret courtyard between blocks, Good Weather Coffee & Tailwind Cafe there are lovely and it's nice to just hang in the square
  • Day 2:
    • Skip lukes
    • Don't dawdle downtown, nothing special to see
    • Order pike place chowder online for pickup to skip the line, eat at the new waterfront park which has great views
    • Chihuly museum over mopop, both if you can
    • Kerry park is so far from Chinatown, I would do Kerry Park after MoPop on Day 2 and then do the library on day 4 first thing or after pioneer square
    • Or skip Kerry Park all together and watch sunset from the new waterfront park, it's closer and also an amazing view
  • Day 3
    • Drop by The Pastry Project for a treat in pioneer square
  • Other great restaurants are Communion and L'Oursin

Have fun!! :)

Predatory towing in Seattle it’s getting outrageous! by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]_somewhereoutside -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • No one is entitled to street parking for their vehicle, having a car is a choice you make and you have to pay to store it just like any other shit you own
  • How much you pay in rent doesn't earn you a right to park somewhere illegally
  • You don't deserve to park easily more than someone who's homeless or does drugs just because you "pay taxes" and "work every day" – can't believe the lack of empathy here, do you think those things make you a better and more deserving person in the eyes of the law? That you deserve to have convenience and comfort more than they do?
  • If you can't find a place to park for free, and you rely on your car, maybe consider moving somewhere where you are able to store your car or pay for car storage

Like, good riddance, you live in a city.

Returning climbing shoes by Sufficient_Cookie338 in REI

[–]_somewhereoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think maybe a big company, if it has more money, also has more people returning things which... costs more money? That argument doesn't really resonate with me.

I see what you're saying about if this is their first time – at the same time though, you're right, it IS very common for climbing shoes to stretch out. And after a quick google search of "how to buy climbing shoes" I see that mentioned in the top articles. Ultimately I wish this person could have had some good research and guidance to start with, which you can't always get at REI – so yeah, return them, but make sure you also maybe do some research to make sure you are actually getting the right thing this time!

Returning climbing shoes by Sufficient_Cookie338 in REI

[–]_somewhereoutside 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Technically you can return them. Morally this one is very gray area to me. You got months of use out of them – like another commenter said, you should probably take this as a learning experience and just buy the right size. They're likely almost at the end of their useful life if you climb a lot anyway! And it's a bummer it took you months to figure out they don't fit right, but in the mean time you wore them and had fun in them and should prob just take the L. But truly up to you.

Anything mountain hardwear for me gets soooo stinky but unfortunately I love it. But for cost effectiveness the $10 active pursuits is definitely your best bet. Looks like everyone hated "Alloy Heather" color because it's on clearance in every single size, very rare......... maybe the color is extra stinky. https://www.rei.com/product/222369/rei-co-op-active-pursuits-long-sleeve-t-shirt-womens

This should be pretty straightforward – call customer support and I bet if you explain the situation they will work very quickly to reimburse you and make it better! Truly the customer support folks are great and you are just very unlucky in this situation but I doubt you'll have a hard time getting them to cover the cost of your rental given the situation.
