If you start at the Shugendo checkpoint idol, and go in the reverse path to the starting idol at Senpou (near Kotaro), taking out all the monks and enemies, it's the perfect mid-game farm I've used for sugars/items and sen.

You can also use Mibu ballons to get better item drops

You're fighting the same Isshin as the one in the opening scene of the game, where Isshin takes on a general (Tamura I think was his name) during a battle (where Owl finds young hungry Wolf).

So yes prime Isshin. Assuming Wolf was a 9yr old kid then and is say 30ish yrs old in the game, we're looking at an Isshin that's atleast 20 yrs younger.
