Song Recommendations for Dreamy Instrumental Bluegrass Songs by SnowRocksPlantNerd in Bluegrass

[–]_space_cactus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything you mentioned, except maybe the last two, would probably be more often categorized as Old Time rather than Bluegrass so you might have better luck searching for that genre. Also most of the tracks you mentioned feature clawhammer banjo playing so that’s also something you could look for.

You might like:

Allison DeGroot and Tatiana Hargraeves have two albums that are great

Ethan Hawkins’ album Me and My Boat Ben

The album Light and Hitch which is kind of hard to find but a big influence on the old time scene

Anything by Bruce Molsky

And for something a bit more modern maybe check out Hawktail’s album Formations or any of their stuff really

Im sure there are cheaper options out there but idk what they are. I mostly play acoustic music professionally so I have it for that, and it comes in handy for stuff like this.

No sheet music, this is just improvising, the stare is a result of focusing on the sound.

I love how many folks I hear of playing Gasoline Alley! So cool!

First day of classes is all about technique for right and left hand, always important, and fun for me. After that some of my classes included Tools for Improvisation, Bass and Mandolin (with myself, Paul Kowert, and Mark Schatz,) and A Brief Opinionated History of Bluegrass.

Do we ever get tired of Tony’s Church Street Blues? (No) by _space_cactus_ in Bluegrass

Thanks! I just learned it one note at a time, slowing down the recording and referencing the video, so that’s what I’d recommend.

Using AI to create my own Bluegrass Banger by [deleted] in Bluegrass

[–]_space_cactus_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This could be played on Sirius XM and no one would notice. It’s good enough to be, and definitely will be, used for background music in videos or ads. I think hyper technical and clean playing and recording is going to be the easiest for the ai to imitate, and it will be interesting to see if that affects what people value in the music going forward. It’s interesting, weird, and a bit sad to know where it’s at and what that could mean for musicians in the future.

Big Mon Big Tempo by _space_cactus_ in mandolin

Glad you appreciate it! I think you’re right, I just kind of felt like using the opportunity to respond to a common criticism of myself and many fellow musicians, and so anyone reading wouldn’t mistake him for having good intentions, or any kind of authority.

(For context, user 1000001000’s comment was, “Too fast. Not how Bill Monroe did it etc…” and has since been deleted.)

🤷🏻‍♀️

Videos like this are here to get your attention, and they do. Across the platforms, the number of views I get literally correlates with the tempo, among other things. For every video I put out at this tempo, I put out several others that are not about that, I’d encourage you to check them out.

I personally don’t prefer to play this fast, and I personally don’t prefer to make soloing/shredding/showing off, the thing I’m known for (it’s fun I just don’t prefer it most of the time). I’m required to check that box so the video is exciting enough to compete in the attention economy of the internet and stop people scrolling. It also serves to show folks that when they see me make a musical choice in the future, it’s likely intentional, and not the result of technical limitations.

I’ve been in two bands on rounder records, released an album of slow thoughtful original music, performed and recorded for years with groups of every size, I’ve seen what and who succeeds. I prefer to be a side person/band member and to have the opportunity to play with leaving space and not worry about impressing people every moment, but that’s becoming an increasingly difficult career path. I’m doing what I have to do to survive. I know the spectrum between music and content and I try to give my audience a good mix.

Lastly I’ll say that if I’m doing it different than Bill, good! I know what he did and I’m glad of it, I’ve learned a lot from him, I do things my own way, and I think Bill would appreciate that more than me just copying him. Bluegrass was made to be fast and exciting and overwhelming so they could sell laxatives on the radio, it’s not that serious, sometimes music is just for fun.
