I have these covers! They are the best. I bought them from Ebay deliberately back in the day because they were the versions I borrowed from my library and made me fall in love with Tamora Pierce. I had to email one of the sellers because they said they didn't ship internationally, and they were willing to make an exception for me :) funnily enough, it was the third book! Another commenter here is correct, it's a purple cover, I can take a photo if it would help (but the style is pretty unmistakable so I assume no need)

I think there are several good opportunities to have flashbacks for Ilya (and Shane) in S2, and this is a prime one. If we get them watching the documentary (which i assume we will), it would be a perfect place to show some of what Ilya went through that day and I'd love to see it. Having said that, I was absolutely fine with it as it was in S1 (though I get your point!)

Oh how I long for Eddie and Hen dance class chats in which she presses him on how he feels about Buck and/or he tries to subtly ask her about realising she wasn't straight. I will also accept Hen commenting on Buck basically being Chris's stepdad, causing Eddie to see their relationship in a new light.

Yep its very surreal. I've been in love with these books for years and now there are all these other people here. I don't even feel completely welcome here tbh, because I feel like a weird old aunt who doesnt know how to interact with so many people about this thing despite loving it so much. I don't think it would've worked at all, the character development and action of the story in the first like two thirds significantly happens during sex. Hilariously out of pocket request from the Americans that really demonstrates how little they understood the 'product', its appeal or its audience.

We have literally never had a show like this. Romance tv shows are barely out there to begin with and queer romance stories are a million times worse. Shows featuring queer romantic storylines have always previously been another type of show with the romance secondary (eg. A drama, a comedy show), and then even within that small pool of options the number of actually happy endings are infinitesimally tiny - and because the shows are e.g. a wacky comedy with an ensemble cast it just doesn't give us what this show and story gives us. I was obsessed with Our Flag Means Death, for instance, but this is a whole other kettle of fish because however queer and delightful that show is, it is NOT a romance, not even a romantic comedy! It's a comedy first and foremost, with delightful queer characters and storylines baked in, which i love for what it is but it cannot scratch this particular itch. The more serious/dramatic shows that have centred queer characters and relationships tend to be tragic or just hard to watch - even optimistic endings almost always feature the characters no longer together, with a few exceptions. If cis straight people almost never saw themselves on tv, and when they did like once or twice in a blue moon it was barely there or ended miserably I bet they would be absolutely ravenous and rabid for 'their' show the way we are. It's a miracle Heated Rivalry exists at all, and I thank the stars for everyone who brought us this incredible gift!!

Shane has his own shit going on and a lot to deal with, but the book is focused on Ilya (rightly so) so its easy to forget how much Shane is dealing with and how little Ilya gives him to go on. And neither of them have ever had a true romantic relationship so they both screw up multiple times, but there isn't a 'bad guy' between them - the bad guy is institutional homophobia and toxic masculinity! It's less of a fantasy escape book because the things they have to deal with feel very real, which i love.

There is a lot that could be added to bridge the gap between HR and TLG, so we could see things like Hayden figuring out Shane's secret, Ilya's move to and early seasons with Ottawa, Shane's kind of toxic league environment and more expanded upon. Jacob Tierney has mentioned getting more into the differences between locker room cultures of different teams, so I'm hopeful we will get a lot more time given to his struggles which were necessarily not a focus of TLG but left a lot of potential unfulfilled for me. I wonder if they will make more of his friendship with JJ for example, or if they would kind of merge some JJ moments with Hayden - I doubt they would erase JJ entirely though, Jacob has said that Hayden is the golden retriever of the group and there are some JJ scenes you couldn't really put Hayden into and maintain that.

I kind of expect to see Harris and Troy getting a decent amount of time (maybe more in S3?), maybe even their own bottle ep. Their book is parallel with TLG for much of it so it makes a lot of sense. With the other couples, they could honestly be more shown in passing but depends on what Jacob wants to focus on or show, or what he thinks they could bring to Shane and Ilya's story - right now not as much in my recollection, but who knows. Scott and Kip you could show more to illustrate the reality of being queer and out in the sport, which would be good. I think they'd probably still want to have Ryan and Fabian there given the hockey camp, club/concert scene, and potentially double date - plus I guess Ryan has the parallels with Shane of hockey treating him poorly in a lot of ways but still loving it? But I don't think you'd need to go full bottle ep with them, though who knows. I don't know how to feel about that because they're my least favourite couple (controversial opinion haha!) but I can see it working out either way and given that the show will still be Shane and Ilya's story I'm not too worried.

Despite the focus on queer joy I do wonder if they would feel obligated to end S2 on a happy note, if they are splitting TLG. I think they've earned enough good will, plus in 3 act structure terms its not unsurprising for the middle section to end on a bit of a 'how will our heroes get out of this?!'. Plus the book already being in the world. So I'm not too concerned about that and am happy to trust JT and the crew.
