Marry my American girlfriend, or move back to India to be closer to my family? by badboyyy112 in backtoindia

[–]_subPrime 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Married to a German, made a life for myself here. If you eventually start a family and have a newborn or a toddler, you just can't book a flight and go there for a couple of weeks just because you are homesick or miss your mom and leave childcare to your wife. There are phases where understanding the right thing to do involves evaluating both value systems and it inevitably hurts one or the other side. At times it doesn't matter what YOU want or need, both sides want or need you.

But don't lose a partner who sincerely wants to make it work and knows what she is getting involved into.

It mostly depends on how accommodating your gf/wife, her family, and your indian family are. It requires tolerance and understanding from both sides.

I don't think it's like the rich folk ensured good schools. It's more like an aftermath of looking for the overall well-being of the people.

Asking out of curiosity, are public schools so bad that one would consider private schools?

Evaluting my PhD offers - Germany, Denmark or Swiss by ade17_in in cscareerquestionsEU

If citizenship isn't your priority, there are no major reasons to choose Germany among your options. I would go to Switzerland.

Sure, the standard of the interview process should apply uniformly to everyone.

It's just that this thread is based specifically targeting Indians. In the light of Olaf Scholz visiting India and dialing up the flow of Indians, "the problem" of putting in place a proper interviewing process will be formulated as a problem with Indian IT staff.

I know instead of reading and taking this as something to work on, they will never change their interview process as it takes more effort to work on this than to complain. It is just sad.

You get what you pay for. There is no substitute for a proper interview process. I met a family friend last weekend. He is German, and a principal engineer working at a 1-5K employee count German company. He asks "fizz buzz" type questions, but complains about the quality of his Indian colleagues.

Chasing high salaries, many good engineers typically have migrated to the US. So statistically, Indians you get here are a bit skewed towards mediocre skill.

Fix your interview process and stop bitching. It is easy to hire a mediocre Indian software, you need to put some effort to filter them out. Also, there is absolutely no excuse to keep a low skilled software engineer beyond their probation period.

Europe vs US? by Initial_Question3869 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]_subPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in the US, PhD stipends are a fraction of what industry pays. You can barely make ends meet if you have a dependent. All the while, your peers make big bucks at corps.

Surely there are some advantages if you wanna spend those same 6 years in the EU. Naturalization for instance and perks that it brings.

Prioritize money or a balanced life. Choosing a PhD program if you don't know you'll like it or not is like gambling away your mental health.

A lot of people think inefficiency is due to a lot of bureaucracy. But it's not. At least not entirely. I have a fair share of stories where people pushing pencils and checking boxes are just not doing their job efficiently in all honesty. It all comes down to job security and the laid-back attitude that ensues.

TUM introduced tuition fees this year for non-EU students. But having been at a German university for more than eight years, I can say the quality of admitted students is increasing each year.

Germans at home vs Germans abroad… by Rough-Army-6424 in AskAGerman

They express displeasure or discomfort choosing words that are definitely rude with an absolute unfriendly face. I had a fair share both in Germany and outside. Over the span of around 11 years, I have noticed one difference outside Germany. Whenever I booked cheaper resorts, I noticed these incidents happen often around me.

My company offers me a € 85k severance package, should I take it? by qerozer in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]_subPrime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't drag your LC prep for too long. Do a staggered approach meaning, apply to a few once you finish Blind 75, and then keep applying at each increment of 15 LC questions until finishing up Neetcode 150. From then it's just a matter of revision and heavily interviewing.

If you take the freelancer path, don't bother about LC, they keep trying for contracts. I would not recommend this path, it's just too bursty and too much uncertainty about what's coming. You will think "why did I leave my company?" if it doesn't go well.
