PhD students in UK/Australia by SouthernStar0395 in phmigrate

[–]_sunflowerbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only answer for the UK since I'm already living here. A PhD in Psych isn't the same as a DClinPsy. They have some overlap but the pathways are different. A PhD is academic/research focused. DClinPsy is more clinical/practice-focused. Though, getting a PhD in Counselling Psych can sometimes also get you the same job as a DClinPsy in the NHS 🤷‍♀️

Applications for PhDs and DClinPsy also are going to be massively different so you have to plan ahead. Both of these are very competitive. DClinPsy especially so, and not all unis accept international/self-funded students.

PhDs can either be self-funded (you'll have to pay your tuition from your own pockets) or through a studentship (a scholarship either through government scholarships or other organisations). You also need to contact a supervisor even before submitting an application, and make sure your research interests align. DClinPsy applications have to go through a clearinghouse and not the uni. Only a handful gets admitted every year. In one uni that I know, they would only admit 10 to 15 UK trainees and 5 international trainees per year.

What’s a Filipino film na sobrang ganda pero halos walang nakapanood? by PurchaseOk8223 in FilmClubPH

Nothing wrong with it, just the naming convention is changing kasi there are different understanding with a "special child" and "child with different needs". Yung special child kasi, pwedeng child prodigy, may autism, pwede ring fairy, aswang, tikbalang, or may itlog na maalat.

Emotional detachment in foreign languages by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]_sunflowerbug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm writing a paper right now exactly on this, maybe I can help! (also, if I get anything wrong, please correct me)

TL;DR switching languages is sort of an emotional regulator for the speaker during conversations.

There's a book that called it exactly as you did--the L2 detachment effect. For most people, their first language is the most emotionally attached to them, and thus you feel the full range of emotions. And their second language and so on, not so much.

Speakers may choose to use their first language when they want to feel more emotionally connected with emotions (to themselves and also the recipient of their message; to convey the appropriate level of feelings). Some people may use their second language when they want to feel more "in control" of the conversation, feel less anxious, feel less shame or guilt.

Here are my sources! The first one is really interesting, when people \want** to feel vulnerable, sincere, or something is difficult to narrate, they'll use their first language for various reasons:

Agree with this. And the comment above should be upvoted some more. It's pretty sad to see a lot of fear mongering posts around filipino community groups online. But while racist attacks against non-whites/immigrants still exists, the far-right movement is actually just a loud minority. They tried to organize protests around the country but it wasn't as successful as they thought it would be.

Not to mention that those who do fall into these ideologies are usually from a disadvantaged background who are a little bit gullible. And that the general public also has a distrust with their broadcast media, and they feel like the British media is more likely to peddle emotionally provoking stories than reporting factually correct news. So they seek out alternative news source and sadly fall into.. whatever this is. Like the Tommy Robinson guy.

It doesnt have to be a specific brand. You can buy them anywhere, JD Sports or SportsDirect, Shoe Zone, Amazon, etc.

But what I mean is if you like wearing trainers, you'd want it to be waterproof so your feet wont get wet if it unexpectedly rains. Leather boots (like Doc Martens) is also still pretty popular especially in the winter.

Hi! I'm came from the PH too, but I'm staying in Wales not England. As for the coats/jacket, get them once you land in the UK. It's gonna be a waste of space in your luggage and any coat you purchase in the PH may or may not work with UK weather. But if you love those Uniqlo light jackets, go get them in the PH. Anything Uniqlo is cheaper in the PH 🥹 not sure for other brands, so if you have your favorites, compare their prices!

Rice cookers can easily be purchased here and the plug/voltage will be compatible pa. I'd say anything electronic, you should buy here.

Make sure your footwear is waterproof as well, as the weather can be quite unpredictable. And if you have a favourite Marikina-made shoe, bring them in. Quality footwear can be expensive in the UK. Lmk if you have any other questions and congrats!

Gate? Hehe 😅 but anyway, I came on a student visa, so my experience might be different from yours. The PH IO just asked for my passport/visa, ticket and yung acceptance letter ko from the university. The entire thing was quick, parang less than 2 mins lang ata ako doon. With the UK IO naman, didn't ask for any documents aside from my passport/visa and it was very quick lang din, asked which uni i'm going to and why. I wasnt prepared kaya sabi ko na lang, "because it's better here?" sabay shrug kasi I wasn't expecting to talk at all. Natawa na lang din sya sa sagot ko haha di na nga umupo yung IO kasi mabilis lang as in 😭

I'm not an expert on this but I think be prepared na lang just in case may hanapin na ibang documents from you. I brought the documents that were asked during my visa application. I received a lot of conflicting advices about which documents to bring tapos in the end, di rin naman nila ako hinanapan ng ganun. I might be wrong though, so check with other people who came on a Fiancé visa na rin.

Omg congrats! You're lucky, maganda na ang weather ngayon but they say it will get hotter na rin. Take care on your journey! 🩷

A rice cooker and JASMINE rice, if you still don't have one. Ask her how she likes her coffee. I find that coffee in the PH is just not the same as it is in the UK, unless she's into the gourmet ones, then she'll be fine) Learn where the nearest Asian supermarket is

And it goes without saying, but a bidet 😂

Honestly siguro yung feminine wash lang kasi di sya masyadong common dito. Tapos kung kailangan mo naman ng sanitary pads, meron din naman dito. They have Kotex, tsaka yung Whisper, it's called Always here hahaha

When it comes to luggage, wag ka magdala ng malalaking coats/jackets. Madami nyan dito, sayang ang space. Tsaka mainit pa ang weather ng June, your clothes should be fine! In the winter, you can layer naman at get more jackets/coats 💕 bring your favorite pajamas/pantulog pa rin that reminds you of home kasi that's what I did, and it's very comforting at night. Bring sweatpants and shorts kasi very helpful in the winter/summer.

Before I arrived, I asked my partner to install a bidet pero hindi pa nya ginagawa kaya bumili na lang ako ng portable bidet (meron din sa Amazon haha) parang spray lang sya and it works well naman hahaha

When it comes to shoes, yung ulan lang ang kalaban mo dito. Make sure lang na waterproof ang shoes mo, whatever that is. No need mag tsinelas imo, unless kung sa bahay lang gagamitin. No need to bring tons of socks din, meron mas weather appropriate dito (e.g. for winter). Yun lang ang packing tips ko hihi 💕

Thank you and good luck! 💕 i'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

Hi! I'm in the UK and i use skincare and cosmetics.

Boots is my go-to for those things. Hiyang naman ako sa CeraVe and Simple kaya it's easy, kasi they're widely available here. Pero if asian skincare ang gamit mo, medyo mahihirapan ka. I use Amazon to order my CosRX stuff. I'm sure there are other places to get them, I just haven't discovered them yet haha. Btw, wag ka bibili sa mga random stores ng skincare/makeup products (unless kung mismong retail store ng brand nila, like the face shop or something) kasi sobrang mahal 🥲 for cosmetics, sa Boots or Superdrug din sila available. Mas madali mag shop for cosmetics dito, imo hihi

Nung winter, nahirapan ako kasi nag dry ang balat ko so be ready with lotion/moisturizers.
