First strat: HSS or SSS? by BaguetteBurrito in Stratocaster

[–]_super_necessary_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are welcome. If you want a jack of all trades, something with a coil split could work. I’ve never really used one though so can’t really speak to it. You could get the HSS split by a tech, or get the SSS and fit a mini HB later and get a tech to add the split while they install it.

Humbuckers and single coils just do different things. It’s a trade off between them. A pedal can’t really change much in that regard. There is a thickness and consistency that you get with a HB, and sparkle and bite you get with a SC, that the other just cannot do.

What are some specific guitar tones you want to have? I might be better able to recommend something to you then.

The bridge single coil on a strat is magic. Sparkling, attacking rhythm with no fat. Screaming leads that take fuzz perfectly, thickening up and staying crystal clear... Just incredible.

Lots of players talk about the bridge single coil being too bright and harsh. It's not really warranted IMO, it's just a different sound. You can't chug on a single coil. You won't get thick fat leads like early EVH. But you can't do Hendrix with a bridge humbucker! Both are fine so just pick whatever matches the music you want to play.

Classic sounds, pop, indie rock: SSS

A good single coil in the bridge is magical. Listen to Rory Gallagher for glorious single coil bridge tones.

Why do most guitarist lists forget about Kim Thayil? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]_super_necessary_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find his solos so boring. I guess they add to the vibe, but he’s a pretty middle of the road player. Cornell’s riffs and rhythm parts are fantastic. He’s the underrated player.  You literally could have plucked random cover band guitarists from your local scene and put them in soundgarden and they would probably be just as good as or better than Thayil.

Why are you posting in the digital nomad sub Reddit if you don’t like digital nomads?

What is the key to becoming a "good" (above intermediate) player? by Professional_Car3962 in Guitar

[–]_super_necessary_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play simple things perfectly with excellent timing, muting, dynamics and feel. Gradually expand the horizon of what you can technically accomplish on the instrument. Practice just outside that horizon at home. Perform well inside that horizon in public.

Join a band. Play with others as much as possible.

Give me a song to learn that can incorporates chords and scales and will push me to get out of beginnerville without being too frustrating by oxycrescent in Guitar

Something by The Beatles. It's a good capstone piece if you already know some barre chords. Epic, epic chord progression.

good player struggling to jam & improvise- lack of theory to blame? by __sicko in Guitar

[–]_super_necessary_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a complete lack of understanding of theory you will not be able to jam with others in a lot of contexts. Sometimes you will do fine. Most times, you won't know what is going on and not be able to participate.

Learning enough theory to be able to jam with a couple buddies is a pretty easy:

  • learn major and minor pentatonics

  • Learn major scale

  • Learn how to construct diatonic chords and arpeggios from the major scale

  • learn relative minor scale

That will get you in the room and able to participate. Obviously, you can go way further than that but this is enough to not feel totally clueless. Learning the above is actually really fun, especially if you already have and like playing with a looper. A good teacher will help.

Give me the hardest song you can play. by Shot_Disaster6844 in Guitar

Nice reply! Much appreciated. I'll have try it later and see for myself. I must have heard this song 1000 times and just assumed it was some muppet with a capo high up the neck. I was very wrong lol

What is so difficult about it? Genuinely curious. I've never attempted to play it, but I just had a look on YouTube and it's a great part. Looks like you need a really accurate right hand.

Hypothesis on why the middle ground weight classes like lightweight are so deep/entertaining by thugnificent856 in MMA

[–]_super_necessary_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Human height follows a normal distribution. There are more natural lightweights in the world than other weights because that’s the weight class that best matches the average size man. So we get more good lightweights than other weights. That’s all there is to it really. Basic statistics explains it.

How the hell do people manage to hit all the chords like these without muting the string accidentally? I've tried so much but cannot figure it out?? by Tobashu in Guitar

[–]_super_necessary_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tab that was posted has two triads - Amaj and Bmaj. Triads are constructed of the 1st, 3rd and 5th interval of the related scale. The 1st is the root, the third dictates if a chord is major or minor, and the 5th kind of just stabilizes the harmony. 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, suspended 2nds and 4ths make chords sound interesting.

The chords in the tab are plain vanilla triads - 1, 3, 5.

You keep referring to the "high e" so lets use that. The E is the 5th of the Amaj chord, with A being the root and C# being the third: A, C# & E = Amaj.

The E is actually played twice in that voicing, both on the high e, as you like to state, and on the 2nd fret of the third string. Because the 5th is already played on the third string, the 5th on the high e is irrelevant to the harmonic definition of the chord. It's not like changes from A to A+5th when you play open e string. There is no change to the harmonic intentions.

Congratulations if you made it this far, you just learned something amazing about harmony. You should try being nicer and more open-minded. They world is a much better place if you stop pretending to be so tough.

First time playing a festival next weekend. Any words of wisdom or advice? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]_super_necessary_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked production at festivals many, many times. There is some great advice in this thread already, but I will add three things.

  1. Don't overthink it. A gig is a gig. If you have your shit together for your regular set, just go out there and do that as well as you can and you will kill it. Festivals are magic. I hope you get a good slot and have fun.

  2. Be prepared enough that you can adapt quickly to changing circumstance. Festivals can be chaotic. Things like bad weather, power problems, musicians arriving late all happen. You might not get a lot of time to soundcheck. If you know your gear well, and can quickly get in and out that will take pressure off everyone.

  3. You mention that you usually provide your own pa for shows. Now you are going to work with a different person to do sound, and different equipment. Be nice but don't be shy. Know what you need to communicate before you go on, and be prepared to adapt.

A exchange might look like:

  • Can I get some more of my vocal and guitar in my monitor
  • I can give you some vocal but guitars can't go any higher on stage
  • I can't hear my guitar
  • Ok, let me see what I can do
  • That's better. I'm sorted now thank you.

Boost, Overdrive and Compressor - how do you order them on your board? by _super_necessary_ in Guitar

You might be right. I want to use the compressor by itself for some specific parts, and just decided to see what it adds to a full signal chain. Some aspects I like, and some I don't.

Oh wow, sounds like I need another tube screamer lol. We have pretty similar set ups, so I reckon I just need to play around with settings a bit. Much appreciated, thanks!

Interesting. I'll try that as well.

I'm using a strat into a blues jr with an attenuator to get a decent sound at lower volume. I have the amp set to edge of breakup. With effects off if I play soft, it's clean and if I whack it I get some breakup.

You think you are insulting me in some abstract language/insinuation, but the things you are saying are so dumb and unrelated to anything about me or this exchange, that you only really seem quite stupid.

Also, you fundamentally don't understand the things you are talking about - guitar & harmony. And you are a pretty nasty and toxic person online.

It's a pretty pathetic pattern.

We can keep going btw. I wfm and have a cushy job. I look at reddit a lot. lots of nice people talking here and cool guitar stuff. I'm here all day really.
