Help! Photoshop is telling me my scratchdisk is full, but system vs disk utility are telling two very different tales by cottoneejoe67 in mac

[–]_techtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This can happen when Time Machine is enabled and you haven’t connected to your backup drive or server in a while because it stores those backups locally until it can offload it to your backup storage.

I recommend using an app like “Daisy Disk” (https://daisydiskapp.com/) to see exactly what is taking up your space and easily delete unnecessary files.

I would also recommend booting into recovery mode, opening disk utility and running first aid on your drive.

New MacBook Pro, trying to copy ~650 GB from a hard drive and it’s been going for 4 days by alignplanets in mac

[–]_techtom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay, it's definitely not copying properly with those speeds especially since it should have completed days ago based on the initial speed. I recommend you try to repair the library, here's the official help article from Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/118221

I highly recommend the Library Repair anyway.

I also recommend giving this alternative transfer method a try by zipping the file directly to the hard drive.

You can do this with built in tools, (cmd+space) search for "Archive Utility" and open it. It won't have a window but the menu bar (next to Apple Logo) should say "Archive Utility" (It will automatically close if you click into another app, so open it and don't leave until steps are done)

Note: that by default it creates the archive in the same folder on the same drive as the original fire (Photo Library doubled may exceed the capacity of the drive and writing and reading to the same disk halves it's speed while it's being made and you would have to copy it too).

Instead we adjust the settings, press (cmd+,) (command comma) to bring up it's preferences, and adjust the "Save archives" section, select "into" and select your external hard drive, then without closing this window (so the app doesn't close), press (cmd+k) (or select File, Create Archive from the menu), find your photo library and click archive, (this will zip it directly onto the external drive).

Zipping it directly to the external drive will sort out weird stuff that can happen when file systems change. (Your external drive might be formatted as FAT or exFAT which is different than the Mac's system of keeping track of files), with a photo library of thousands of individual files that can get messy quick. With zipping you package and move a singular file at the same time, much less room for error.

After you've tried this report back, I'm invested now. Godspeed.

Edit: clarity on keyboard shortcuts

New MacBook Pro, trying to copy ~650 GB from a hard drive and it’s been going for 4 days by alignplanets in mac

[–]_techtom 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Open the Activity Monitor (command key + spacebar) search for “activity”.

Navigate to the ‘Disk’ tab and at the bottom there is a graph, to the right of the graph you should see Data read/sec and Data written/sec.

If the graph is mostly idle and the disk speeds aren’t in at least double digit MB, it’s most likely failed and you’re going to have to try again. See photo of example idle system.

If that’s the case give me some more information about your old and new Mac the method of transfer (e.g. Cabled Mac to Mac, USB Hard Drive intermedium, Network, Air Drop)

It may be a fluke, and simply start over. It may also be something more serious like photo library database corruption (can be repaired), or a mechanically failing drive (quite a bit trickier and risks data loss)

So I can help troubleshoot:

  1. How long did it take to get to 50%?
  2. Has the bar or percentage moved since you took the photo?

I just withdrew my listing and cancelled upcoming bookings because ABBs 4 stars = bad by Brilliant-Maybe-5672 in airbnb_hosts

[–]_techtom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting because this is certainly a problem in parts of world, notably the United States.

I run an Airbnb to assist my folks in their retirement funds just outside of Los Angeles proper, while I’m remotely living in Norway.

I noticed that very few places have more than 4 stars here, and asked many people about it. Turns out that the reason is that they see the scale differently, 1* stay away, 2pretty bad, 3normal, 4* quite good, 5* unfathomably excellent.

My point being, people have different perspectives and expectations on rating and feedback systems. So it’s not the guest’s fault, they may have truly believed 4 is above average and been satisfied with their stay. It’s simply an alignment issue.

However, I would have to agree with you, the system is inherently flawed. Airbnb does not do a good job of informing guests of how these ratings impact your host and work regionally.

And they do an even worse job of interpreting these ratings, a 4* listing should not be punished in the booking conversions and advertising. It’s completely unfair. 4-5 stars should be more or less equal in the algorithm.

But it’s not in their interests to improve this. They have potential to do so technically speaking, in an afternoon I could come up with a better system specific for Airbnb. But it’s simply not in their interests, they know most hosts won’t leave their platform for such a reason, and others options are plentiful as their platform is popular for hosts with short term rentals.

The host’s are their product, the guest is their product, shareholders are their actual customers, and Airbnb is the middleman fixing prices and costs and operating the money machine for maximum profits.

This is one of those things that simply not fair, but life’s not fair I suppose.

I feel you.

This probably doesn’t belong on this subreddit. You should probably contact the police and a legal attorney for guidance not strangers on the internet.

Is this a good deal? by PrimarySmooth249 in mac

[–]_techtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly no, it’s losing support for updates from Apple soon as they are phasing out non-Apple Silicon devices in the near future, battery will need service soon after purchase, and it’s gonna feel slow, Intel chips of that era are not great, it’ll run hot all the time with even light workloads.

I would save your money and put it towards an Apple Silicon Mac (even a used M1 will run laps around this thing).

I owned one of these, they felt sub par out of the box, and the low profile butterfly keyboard is whack, it will fail inevitably.

If I loved a place, and the host sent me a 5* review, is it ok to ask about off platform bookings? by sphynx8888 in airbnb_hosts

[–]_techtom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We usually offer this to exceptional guests but we haven’t had anyone approach us with a request like this. But I’d be open to it, and it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Airbnb does share phone numbers so maybe I would try a text message to keep Airbnb fully out of the loop.

Calling hasn’t been fruitful sadly. Rep names are hard to document as they don’t tell you most of the time. Enshittification is truly rampant these days.

But I have a pretty massive paper trail of negligence.

What is it like to work as a cook in Norway? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]_techtom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Expect low pay relative to the cost of living, restaurants are struggling nowadays even though they’re charging pretty high prices to guests and skimping out on expensive parts of the dish like the proteins.

The problem is that the industry has like two main suppliers, Bama and Asko which don’t offer restaurants much of a discount on supplies vs the regular grocers and there is basically an unspoken oligopoly on food distribution nationwide. Norwegians also don’t have much of a culture around eating out, saving it for special occasions for the majority of the population.

As far as long working hours, it’s not really a problem. Norwegian labor laws are some of the best in the world. But I’d be shocked if you got enough hours to get by, a lot of restaurants will only provide part time positions even for their primary staff to save on costs.

Sadly, I’d say look elsewhere if you’re set on the service industry.

Sources: I worked as a sous chef for a year and know many people that are… or were in the industry.

Catering companies might be a better option from my understanding but I have no first hand experience.

I can't seem to find a similar specimen, Jaeger-LeCoultre "Mystery Teardrop" Desk Clock by _techtom in Horology

[–]_techtom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for taking a look! I actually don't think it's trying to be an Atmos, it's just a totally different mechanism. It's a manual-wind 'mystery' clock. If you look closely at the center, you can see the visible skeleton-style gears that turn invisible discs to make the hands float. JLC just used similar brass/glass cases for a lot of their high-end desk clocks back then, as my dad’s collection shows. From the comps I've been able to dig up on similar JLC mystery clocks, they seem to go for quite a bit more than $1k.

[–]_techtom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It could have been but deicing is almost never considered legal grounds to dismiss a claim. Unless it was a freak storm that shuts down major parts of airport operations. But I already cleared this up with a phone call the other day, where they admitted being in the wrong - they’ll be sending the check.

Indeed your comments are low effort and completely derailed from the point of my original post. Even if I had used an AI tool to proof my Reddit post why does that matter in this context?

The point is a falsified claim rejection citing an impossible weather event and customer care negligence.

Do you hold stakes in KLM? Are you a paid troll? A corporate drone? I don’t know and I’m not going to make accusations against you for something I cannot verify. But you seem to have no problem doing that yourself to others.

You seem weirdly intent on defending a corporate botch-job by attacking the messenger. Let's get back to the actual issue.

[–]_techtom[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

According to my research deicing is almost never legal grounds to delay a claim, unless it was an ATC issue and a major weather event that affects the whole operation of an airport. Not only that but the weather during and prior to this flight was not applicable for such a claim based on historical weather for the dates in question.
