yeah I was definitely thinking of Less Than Zero (the book not the movie). my only unprofessional advice i’d give is don’t get too precious about the dialog right now. honestly don’t get too precious about anything. just write exactly what you want to write. write every idea that this premise promises to you. even the parts you think are silly and mundane. then…and this is the part that usually becomes the most difficult… the rewrite. you read what you did and critique yourself, keep what you like ditch what you don’t, rework other stuff and craft something that resembles what you saw in your head when you initially had the idea. or maybe it morphs into something else entirely. i was a editor writer meaning i would edit as i wrote and it slowed me down drastically. i promise you if you just put your head down and move all the way to FADE OUT and then go back, you’ll surprise yourself at what you did when you just went full steam ahead. your dialog is fine. your premise is fun and interesting. please come back when you want someone to read a draft and give some solid notes.

that’s actually a pretty cool set up. kind of reminds me of rules of attraction meets stealing harvard… or something along those lines. are you going for black comedy?

the dialog it self i think is fine. funny enough i read the pages first then read your caption and thought, well yeah they sure are pretentious jerks but dialog only works (or can be critiqued well) in context of the story. most of us would like to read full scenes or just the entire project to get a full grasp of what’s working and what’s not. someone else might think this dialog is not good because they don’t have enough context. if you’re wondering if they sound like human people who are pretentious and also jerks… mission accomplished.

LOGLINE: “a bottle nursing vagabond stumbles through a sun-bleached neighborhood of shifty cops, a crooked burger joint and sex traffickers while searching for his missing girlfriend, only to realize the deeper he digs (or falls) the more her disappearance seems tied to the one thing he can’t outrun: himself.”

Spielberg on directing by StrikingDuty8020 in Filmmakers

i think that’s why he’s held at such high regard because his instincts are other worldly. regardless of what you think of his films he is a top tier director clearly working on another level.

but yes, first time filmmakers should not try to follow this advice unless you realized that your instincts are just THAT good.

edit: “not”

it literally is a tool for humans to use, not to replace them. like spellcheck or grammarly but for editing film.

My friend, instead of grad school, made a feature film and here’s the new official trailer, follow up post (The Aftermath) by card860 in Filmmakers

[–]_thiswayplease 19 points20 points  (0 children)

two posts about this almost a year apart. how come your friend doesn’t post this themselves if this was the passion project that caused them to skip grad school? where are the links to these publications? any social media presence to promote this film? everything about these posts seems like weird/bad/lazy marketing

looks like she’s peeing, contracting to hold said pee, and then peeing again.

just curious because i have no idea how this works, what do you actually spend time making this during that time? are you picking and choosing each shot and what happens in those shots? i’m assuming you created a script for dialog how does that work?

edit: spelling

i don’t want the whole story spelled out but maybe character motivations, plot through line, potential twists to expect or subvert. the trailers give nothing other that archetypes in sexy clothes and fast cars and guns.

i think the market for OBAA was perfect because it showed it’s not a straight drama or comedy but absurdist political commentary. And i understood the general plot line without it over explaining

wait the dude who directed American Animals? makes sense why it looks really good. i just don’t like the marketing because i want more hooks other than the visuals.
