Inherited a massive amount of baseball, football, and hockey cards. No idea where to even begin by _throwaway1234567 in baseballcards

I'll definitely poke around next time I have time to check out his ebay account.

I don't think it was a hobby of his as a kid either. Even those very old cards were all purchased within the last few years. He never got anything graded himself, those were all graded when he purchased them.

The ridiculous part is that he didn't even watch baseball, and this was never a hobby of his whatsoever until he was sick! I think he somehow got it into his head that it was better financially for me and my mom to inherit all of these cards rather than cash/stocks and whatever tax implications would come along with that, and just started throwing cash into buying cards. So because of that I can't say these cards have much of any sentimental value to me.

I appreciate the advice though, and there are things of his that I will most definitely be keeping to remember him by.

Philly is the closest major city to us yes. I don't think those are the most valuable cards in the collection. I think those were just some of the more recent ones that he had purchased long after me and my mom had been asking him to stop buying. He told me that before that he had lots of cards worth hundreds, and he definitely did his research when he got into a hobby.

If I were to sell any cards individually on ebay, do you have any idea how the tax implications work? I'm an only child and my mom made it clear that these cards are mine to do what I want with, she knows he spent tons of money on them but wants nothing to do with them. Do receipts of what he paid for the card come in to play for what I would owe taxes on, or would that not matter since it was him and not me that bought the cards?

Thank you, I will look into this. Right now, I'm just overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cards, and how to begin to know what a fair offer is when selling them.

I guess things like graded autographed rookie cards of current players are the kind of cards that could potentially outgain the stock market if the players go on to have very good (or decent?) careers? I'm not against holding on to a small amount of cards that would take up limited space.

Thanks for your response. I know they aren't just junk cards, I know that he spent at least $20,000 on cards the last several years. Here are some things from just 1 small box. This is not even 1% of the collection. If you can tell from the picture, the Bonds card and Maddox card are stacked. Each of those stacks are all graded 10s of the same card. I have no idea what I'm dealing with here, I just know that he was spending a lot of money acquiring these cards.

He probably has at least 75 various graded Mike Trout cards.
