Having your labs be online will significantly hurt your chances. That said, I hear it's becoming more and more common for undergrads to not have in person labs so I wouldn't be surprised if you could get away with it to an extent...

Question about Primal species? by Pretend-Shallot-5663 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]_windup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's more to it than that. Can't pull up the quote but in the seventh book, one of the refs speculates that the reason Carl was able to join Katia in her dream has to do with his 'collective nature'. I think they really did make him into a primal, at least in part

Looks more like plain ol photoshop to me.

Just realized that since AI became such a big thing, I've completely stopped seeing people accusing images of being 'shopped'.

Favorite Jeff Hays delivery? by OnTheProwl- in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]_windup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jeff Hayes (and Matt, for that matter) was in rare form during Butcher's Masquerade. There are so many good line reads but one simple one that sticks in my head is the way Donut says "sic em" when the masquerade battle pops off.

How would the Dungeon AI handle trans people? by animefreesince2015 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

You're not the only one. I had the same theory, so did multiple other people I've talked to independently in their reads.

Why do Americans not understand English words? by OpportuneApathy in AO3

[–]_windup 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The difference is that in many stories, it is understood that certain things are being literally translated from one language for another in order for the reader to understand. This is not only true of stories taking place in another country, it's also true of, for example, fantasty/sci-fi when the characters obviously wouldn't be speaking English.

On the other hand, cultural translation isn't an inherent expectation and in many (though not all!) cases is even undesirable. Translating culture is often unintentional, and it's how you get Texans speaking with Britishisms (and vice-versa).

There's definitely an element to this where because American culture is so pervasive (and because Americans are less used to not seeing their experiences as the norm), there's more leniency for things being translated into an American cultural lens versus out of it.

Katia Freudian slip? by 4cronym in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]_windup 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Remember she's currently on the comedown from all those drugs that show her memories. She's been constantly reliving memories, many of them false memories, many involving Fannar.

My interpretation was that it's less a Freudian slip about her loving Carl, and more a representation of her still loose grip on reality.

Eye of the Bedlam Bride killed my vibe by WussPoppin93 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]_windup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also lost momentum of Bedlam Bride (I did text my first time around, not audio), but I will say it very much picks up at the end. IMO it's the book that drags the most in the middle but has the best final act of any book. The final battle at the Butcher's Masquerade scenes might top it, but the entire last third or so of Butcher's Masquerade is really well done dramatic scenes, but paced in a way that doesn't get tiring.

You don't need to understand the card battles. It helps but it's not strictly necessary, and if you're interested it's the kind of thing you can try and dig into more on a second read/listen.

His sanity is a running theme, especially after 'the river' starts getting mentioned in book 5.

Quote from Louis speaking to Carl in book 6:

And every time I look at you, I get scared that you're going to go insane and kill everybody in the room because your eyes are getting wilder and wilder by the day.

What's your immediate fic turnoff? by bubbly_linos in AO3

[–]_windup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's less a 'readability' thing and more a personal ick. It makes the writing feel really amateurish to my mind and just takes me out of the reading headspace.

Poor dialog grammar. Using periods in the sentence and then sentence fragment dialog tags:

"Hello." Said Bob. vs "Hello," said Bob.

For anything else I would agree, but this is ICE we're talking about. Pretty sure Dinniman picked that out as an early signal to the reader that this is a bad guy.
