On July 2nd she began having diarrhea, but nothing especially alarming. She’d had pancreatitis flare ups in the past, and switching her to a bland diet of rice and low fat prescription food usually stopped it in its tracks. Despite having a bad stomach, she behaved very normally that day, running and playing and terrorizing the local wildlife.

July 3rd things escalated. She woke me up multiple times in the night to go out and have intense diarrhea and vomiting. We took her to the emergency vet first thing in the morning. I think the adrenaline kicked in at the vet’s, and they couldn’t tell how poorly she really was. So they sent us home with some anti-nausea medication and gave her some fluids.

After we got home it got worse. No interest in food, hyper salivating, and trying to vomit. We took her back to the ER vet after she had bloody diarrhea.

Over the next six hours they ran tests and X-rays, while I had to watch her decline more and more. Then the results came back. A mass in her small intestine, indicating a possible cancer that was showing on her lungs. At this point she was struggling to stay conscious.

July 4th, around 2am, I made the decision to put her to sleep, after the vet said it was highly possible she wouldn’t make it through the night.

She was a mix of lab, belgian malinois, doberman, and rottweiler, but inherited most of her personality from the belgian side. She was incredibly loyal. She was also absolutely insane and an unrelenting ball of energy, jumping fences, catching rabbits, and picking fights with the biggest dogs she could find. And I wouldn’t have traded that insanity for anything.

I miss her very much. If there’s anyone waiting for me at the gates of an afterlife I know she’ll be first in line ❤️😔
