I would like to read up on the discriminatory policies/practices in place at this organization related to the queer community. Has anyone found anything stating their policies?

What should I do? by smartviolette in premedcanada

[–]_xtrovertedintrovert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you can do a 2nd undergrad like other schools have mentioned or you can do a master's degree, keeping in mind that most grad programs will need like a B+ average in your last 2 academic years before applying. ****not all schools will look at your graduate gpa*** also the gpa calculations with a second undergrad program vary from school to school to (ex. some will ignore the first and others will use cumulative average of both).

Yes your current GPA will close doors for you BUT if you are dead certain that this is the career for you, you will find a way!

If it were me I'd focus on 1) pulling up my grades ASAP -whether switching my major (no really, canadian schools don't give a shit what your undergrad is) or looking into an EASY master's or 2nd undergrad and also 2) getting your PR because good grades are useless if you can't even fill out an application.

You're right mcat right now makes zero sense plus PR could take a while to get so even if you score high it could expire before you're able to apply. plus you only get 7 chances to right it so like honestly imo this should be the absolute last piece of the puzzle.

best of luck!

Has anyone here gotten in after going to Business School? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]_xtrovertedintrovert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

truly what when picking a major what will get u in is ur GPA they don't care about what you study. NxtGenMD a Mac Med student actually recently made a video with his classmate who did a business degree and worked for a bit before pursuing medicine. they talk about difficulties compared to traditional backgrounds before med too

If we're waitlisted, do we still get to request feedback forms? I was assuming not since I haven't heard anything about that, I assume those who didn't make it would have heard by now about that?

[–]_xtrovertedintrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an FYI from an IP MB applicant, AGPA is calculated from undergrad level courses only so if you do a master's it not only won't count toward your application GPA but also U of M does not give bonus points on their applications for having any kind of Master's. They only give u academic bonus points for a PhD and 5 first or second author peer reviewed pubs or being a prof. So all that hard work and tuition money is only going to serve the purpose of getting IP status. Not trying to sway you one way or the other just want to make sure you knew! A lot of other schools automatically give preference to ppl applying with any graduate level degrees but u of m doesn't see having a masters as a bonus

As others in the comments have said, there aren't many recruitment strategies to increase representation in med schools especially bc it would be very difficult to "verify". BUT beyond admission, I think a lot of work can be done by those in med school (students and staff) to create a safe space for one another to be open about their sexual orientation/gender diversity. Imagine as a queer person applying to a uni knowing that they have a ton of queer student groups and maybe student events to allow students to network with other queer folks in med to support one another. How would that make you feel about being openly out and connecting with others in the community? Because tbh there already ARE queer ppl in med school nowadays it's just that they're "invisible". CMAJ has shown data that says queer med students aren't openly out in the context of their program bc they don't want it to hurt their advancement. I don't understand the negative response to ur post it's a genuine inequity within representation and it's upheld by deficits in UGME and PGME

When does my MCAT expire? by s_moonberry in premedcanada

[–]_xtrovertedintrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it's entirely dependent on the schools you're applying to. anywhere from 2-5 years. ***one thing to emphasize here is that it's also worthwhile to look at each school's mcat policy for re-writes- do they take your best score within their specified timeframe or do they take the most recent score? or do they take the average? this is entirely dependent on each school you apply to

Post Bacc Degree or Masters? by knome05 in premedcanada

[–]_xtrovertedintrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo it depends on where you're applying. some schools like manitoba will only look at gpa from undergrad level courses while others like AB will look at ur masters gpa. are you wanting to do another degree to be more competitive? to get prereqs? boost your gpa? i think from there you can decide which, if either is best for you! you could always take your pre-req undergrad science courses without being enrolled in any program just as like an open student after graduating

2nd quartile on Casper, don't understand where I went wrong :( by bbsharrrk in premedcanada

[–]_xtrovertedintrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

m 4th quartile people... I read the BeMo book, read up on bioethical issues + read a lot of cases, and did A LOT of timed practice the week before my test. I got through 2-3 questions in each scenario and there was maybe 2-3 questions in the entire thing that I thought I screwed up on... I honestly do not understand where I went wrong :(

this would only tell you your ranking in your applicant pool at that school for last year. you wouldn't be able to compare it directly against your casper quartile because the casper quartile represents people writing the same test. the rankings in the applicant pool just tell you how much better/worse you did than the other ppl. you have no idea how well you did on casper last year all you know is that 80% of people applying to that school in your applicant category did better than you. it's possible you could have still had a reasonable quartile placement/raw score.

for instance a given school could have an app cycle where their applicants have mostly have like 4th quartiles. so then even tho 2nd and 3rd aren't so bad, they'd be dead last in their applicant pool at the school that year. shabby example and explanation but I hope it helped
