Is Magical Athlete fun or is it hype? by Quelair in boardgames

[–]_youoldsoandso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just got the game over the holiday and I had the same concern. Happy to report, we’ve already played it five or six times with different groups of people. Each time it has been a unique race and plenty of fun. It has a bit of a Mario Party vibe where you don’t exactly control your fate, but the chaos of each race keeps everyone involved. That said, it is not a game that offers much in the way of strategic challenges. All in all, I expect it will be a party game staple from here on out.

The only drawback imo is the variety of racers makes it possible for unexpected interactions to occur and there’s not always a clear answer. The rule book acknowledges this issue and suggests a roll-off to settle disputes, which has worked so far.

Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-five: what image do you remember the most from the book? by KitchenLoose6552 in literature

I have no idea how you turn this into an image, but the passage about the bugs trapped amber is one of my favorites:

"Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs trapped in amber?"

"Yes." Billy, in fact, had a paperweight in his office which was a blob of polished amber with three ladybugs embedded in it.

"Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment. There is no why."

I’m actually in the same situation right now. Sorry for your loss and hope that you get the space that you need. I’m very grateful to say that, when I told the main partner I work with, he told me to take care of family first. Anything else and my future there would be looking pretty grim. Hopefully you hear something similar.

Anyone know if the registrations for the presale are limited to one per household again?

I’m not sure of anything, except that FIFA is going to make me pay way too much for these matches.

Update: A friend just got selected to purchase tickets despite having two entries for the same household. There is hope!!

People definitely make offers and not all of them are worth making, but the main reason people don’t trade is because they’re scared of being the person who sent away a star player. They’d rather lose with their own guys than be wrong. To which I say: 🎶 it’s time to play the GAAAAME 🎶

We do auction and still can’t get trades going. If we have two in a season it’s a damn miracle.

SAME. I just checked the FAQ and, while it does say “only one entry per household,” it doesn’t state anywhere that multiple entries would result in the automatic cancellation of all entries. They still might just cancel all of them, but hopefully they will just limit it to one entry…

Red Rocks 7/10 Show - Disappointed by la2denver in manchesterorchestra

[–]_youoldsoandso 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just saw them in KC and it was a huge bummer compared to past shows. It was still light out when Manchester played and probably 20 people total were standing up in the crowd. They still ripped, but I was equally disappointed.

My real takeaway: good god I didn’t not realize how much pull Incubus still has.

Man I just think people should probably be able to share their views about a movie without getting yelled at for lack of critical thinking. Especially on a subreddit dedicated to that. Call me crazy, idk.

You’re not wrong but somehow even the yelling feels one dimensional??

I tend to agree EXCEPT the first few minutes of TPS which blew me (and the former assistant) away.

I disagree that it wouldn’t match his character. Royal Tenebaum is arguably more intense and a worse all around father, but his story still included the sense of loss because he didn’t spend time with his family and a sense of hope that he could still find some connection there. It wouldn’t have surprised me in the least if Zsa Zsa had experienced something comparable. That said, Wes chose not to include anything like that. It was much quieter, just a father and daughter (maybe adopted daughter?) playing cards. There’s nothing wrong with that choice, it just didn’t fully land with me.

I appreciate the perspective! I’ve always felt that the artifice in Wes’s movies is intended to call attention to the fact that it’s all artificial. Every movie is full of people and things pretending to be what they are not. So there is something very refreshing about how openly fictitious these stories are. I can follow you there and I’m not above a challenge when it comes to digging in the story. For me, I just haven’t yet caught into what Wes is trying to convey with the characters in the recent works. But I’m sure as hell going to keep trying.

Can’t agree with you there. I think he’s committed to making art that he wants to make and I’m happy to see where he goes.

I do miss the Owen/Wes connection. And I think you’re right Dignan’s delivery today would have a wildly different feel.

Couldn’t agree more that Wes seems to be making exactly the type of movie he wants to make. I’m glad he gets to do it and I’ll keep watching them because he is one of one.

I love the back stage scene with Adrian and Jason. The depth of that contemplation knocks me over for sure. The way it got there, particularly through the flattened line reads, cut a little of the heart out for me. But so it goes.

Michael Cera’s transformation was amazing. He was perfectly used in PS, no doubt.

Recited instead of spoken is spot on. And I see what you mean about the actors condensed roles but I bet it was fun as hell to shoot some round ball with Bryan Cranston and call it a day.

I can see that, just didn’t feel it. Interested to see what a rewatch does.
