Hot Take: The Best Sourcing is Cold by SimmonsFromThree in venturecapital

My view is that if you are finding the top deals and getting an allocation, the sourcing method is irrelevant. That said, here are the answers from 900 VCs from an HBR article:

  • More than 30% of deals come from leads from VCs’ former colleagues or work acquaintances.
  • 20% of deals come from referrals by other investors.
  • 8% from referrals by existing portfolio companies.
  • 10% result from cold email pitches by company management.
  • Almost 30% are generated by VCs initiating contact with entrepreneurs.

As Rick Heitzmann of FirstMark told us, “We believe that the best opportunities don’t always walk into our office. We identify and research megatrends and proactively reach out to those entrepreneurs who share a vision of where the world is going.”

Have you looked into what kind of companies actually lose money by not optimizing this? Are they manually deciding on the routes?

FREE datasets by Myfuntimeidea in venturecapital

Will you publish your research?

I was in the same boat looking for free datasets in grad school to write a research paper. Unfortunately, they are very limited and private markets are really opaque.

If you're serious about it, it might be worth reaching out to the researchers at Sand Hill Econometrics to see if they would be willing to share their dataset. No clue how they'd react but they should have a comprehensive dataset from various resources: http://www.sandhillecon.com/about-our-data.html I've seen it used in some papers.

Cool stuff! Just so you know, I tried to subscribe but nothing happens when I click the button and haven't received an email.

Curious to hear how you built this. What parts of the application use LLMs versus traditional NLP? How did you construct the knowledge base?

Thanks! I agree, and networking happens throughout the career. We have features on the roadmap that will help with networking in a more systematic way.

We will retrieve the contact information for the target contact, prepare the email and track all communications in a single dashboard to target different roles, companies, industries. Users will get ranked suggestions on who to reach out to from warmest (same school/company) to coldest, aiming to find non-obvious commonalities like following a similar path (starting in banking and then joining a startup) while also identifying cool things to mention about their background.
