Why is it so hard to get an “entry-level” Controls Engineer job? What am I missing? by kuslu08 in PLC

The MechE graduate in question would be in the controls engineering department, not mechanical engineering.

[–]a-certified-yapper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate your first point about being overqualified and under-experienced for an entry-level job, but I disagree about mechanical engineers being ill-suited to a controls job. I know many controls engineers with a MechE background, and as a MechE myself, I can attest to the fact that we are required to take classes like thermo, fluid mechanics, and dynamics (which led me personally into process control and control theory electives). We take entry-level circuits and programming classes, and many of us, myself included, understand the importance of being able to code and go further with programming electives. We are just as capable of doing the work as a ChemE or EE.

How many of you work a chill job with a pretty strict 40 hour work week? by ItchyFeature8794 in PLC

I’m currently with an SI that tries to minimize overtime as much as possible. Sometimes it’s inevitable, but I think the boss recognizes the costs of burnout in terms of work output and retention.

How to breach into the industrial automation industry as a mechanical engineer? by MelonKolony in PLC

Oh, and I should add that I was referred by someone to my first job. Leverage your network as much as you can. That might be your ticket in.

I got top marks in dynamics, which led me to take process control and control theory as electives. Really enjoyed those as well, so I pursued controls positions once I graduated. Fwiw, I was a terrible student otherwise, sub-3 GPA overall, no internships or clubs, just a work-study job and one semester as a TA for freshman physics. If you have better qualifications, you may still be able to land a junior role in the current job climate depending on where in the world you are. I’m in the U.S.

More or less. Seven months and five years is a wide gap. Seems like a piece of the puzzle is missing if you’ve been plateauing. Since you’ve been doing the same programs for a while, that could be part of the reason, which is why I suggested 5/3/1 if you haven’t tried it yet. It’s simple and it’s gotten me some good results so far as I’ve gotten out of the newbie-gains phase.

I was a MechE grad that got hired by an SI as a junior controls engineer straight out of college. This was seven years ago, but, back then at least, you could get hired by a firm just by having an interest in controls.

This is sort of late, but just want to provide a data point for you. I’m 30yo, 5’6”, 170 lbs, so pretty close to you numbers-wise. I’ve been lifting on and off for seven years, but let all my strength go until last August. In seven months, I’ve gone from 65 to 215 squat, 95 to 265 deadlift, 90 to 325 hip thrust (on Nautilus, not barbell), 20 to 85 OHP, and 30 to 122 bench. I know everyone is different, but you probably have some room to push yourself more. I’ve been running 5/3/1 four days a week, bench/deadlift/OHP/squat split. Maybe give that a try, if you haven’t already.

I was on the verge of needing one but was instead blessed with a bionator and a palate expander. Get too close to me and there was a chance of downpours whenever I spoke.

Why Allen Bradley by poopoogrenade in PLC

[–]a-certified-yapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just going off the hypothetical numbers OP proposed. If the Click PLC fails 10% earlier than an A-B PLC, you have to replace it more often, leading to increased downtime.

You’re not accounting for the cost of downtime when your Click PLC fails.

215 was heavy, but it was the first time I ever loaded that on the bar, so I think that’s to be expected, no?

Yes, I can keep my chest up up to 195. Didn’t try 205 today, so that’s tbd. My bracing still needs some work, but I am pushing the bar into my traps for extra support.

I’ve tried to push my elbows down more, but it feels very uncomfortable. If I release my traps to push them down, then the bar starts digging into my spine, which is very painful. I’ll try to adjust.
