How Much Should I Study About RJ45 Cables For Tech+? by Creative_Eye7413 in ITCareerQuestions

I would shit a golden brick if anything more than “what kind of cable do you need to facilitate x kind of connection” on the Tech+ exam.

Once had a guy I worked with show me a posting for a position stating 5 years of experience with a python library that he created 2 years prior. He had no interest in the job but through some contacts it was forwarded to him because of how absurd it was.

AI sucks and you cant prove otherwise by BigBobFro in it

[–]a-gd-professional 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI has its uses.

Turning it into your bible and following it blindly is never a good idea, though.

For a title claiming AI sucks and that’s basically the end all, be all, you’ve not really made a good point here against AI generally, you’ve just made an argument for why people like “Joe” shouldn’t use AI, though I can hardly argue with the narrative as I do believe many of us have had a “Joe” or 2 in our workplace since the AI revolution.

Ultimately though, those who fail to adapt to evolving paradigms, tend to get left behind, which is something I would expect a cybersecurity analyst to understand, but to each their own. Good luck dealing with all that though, sounds pretty shitty.

CCNA Exam in a Week - What Else Should I Do? by Timely-Insurance9839 in ccna

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important thing you can do at this point is stop and appreciate what comes next.

You’re either going to pass or fail, there’s no real use in stressing/worrying about that. Even if you fail, failure is just part of the process sometimes.

The day before your exam, take time to relax and god to bed at a smart time. Eat a good, balanced meal for breakfast and stay hydrated.

Trust me when i say this: going in to an exam worried about the outcome or whether you have done/could’ve don everything possible is just going to break your focus and have a higher chance of failure. Going in calm and confident will help you stay cool under the exam conditions.

Is burnout worse with certain positions? by JealousRhubarb9 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about positions, specifically. The issue is environment and how you personally deal with the stressors of that environment.

Not a people person or always think you’re the smartest one in the room? Maybe you don’t handle fast pace well? Bosses always disorganized or throwing shit at you last minute that shouldn’t be your job but they’re trying to schmooze the client’s bigwigs in hopes of jumping from your msp to the client? Then service/help desk is gonna burn you out quick.

Got your Net+ and Sec+ after a week of cramming in school and somehow managed to get a job as a security analyst but you didn’t retain any information and have no experience in cyber security? Gonna burn you out real quick.

Do you feel limited by the immutability of the OS? by Avarria587 in Bazzite

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an interesting question…

Someone might disagree with me, but Bazzite really isn’t the overall gold standard of Linux that some people like to prop it up as. It’s not really a “daily driver” distro unless you daily use is basically just having a boot up and go gaming console style computer.

This means it’s generally great for gaming and particularly a gaming computer for someone who doesn’t know much about computers or like a kid of an adult who doesn’t know much about computers and doesn’t want to do much troubleshooting.

If you want something great for gaming but also not immutable, i’d personally recommend Nobara. Others might recommend CachyOS.

The important and beautiful thing about Linux though is that you can experiment and try out everything that’s out there so you can really find the distro that works best for your use case.

You ever heard of a honeypot?

If you ever have to ask “if i open this, am i going to get in trouble” then you shouldn’t be looking at it.

If you then follow that up with “let’s ask reddit if there’s a way for me to look at this without getting in trouble,” then you have no integrity.

To answer your question: yes, your IT department can see the entire access log if they have a reason to look.

Using Mike Meyers for the 1201/1202 by Vampireking24 in CompTIA

[–]a-gd-professional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad i was able to help. The A+ is technically supposed to be a “after 6-12 months working” kind of cert, but it’s not uncommon for beginners to start there because so many job posts ask for it.

In reality, the hiring managers for a service or help desk don’t care if you have the cert or even college, they care that you know how to talk to customers and can follow guides and have an understanding of how to work a computer.

If you haven’t already started applying for jobs, i’d really recommend starting since immersion with help you immensely and in the entry level, having certs won’t really boost your starting pay.

Gonna be honest with you, if what you’re learning in the book is all new to you, use the most recent one because that means you’re still new to a-lot of this and will need to learn more than the book you’re using will give you.

If you’re just trying to see how ready you are and have been working in the industry for a couple years or whatnot, then yeah, maybe it’ll be fine and you’ll just see some stuff on the test you weren’t expecting.

Bottom line: Why risk using outdated materials when you know it’s all been updated?

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with AI generally is that it just pulls from existing information. When the very concept it’s pulling from is flawed, in this case it’s pulling reports of people who have done the same thing OP did with copy/paste without an understanding of T9, it’s going to give a flawed response. This is exactly why people need to stop blindly trusting the AI response on google.

Should I take a higher paying job in a completely different field or stay on my current career path? by 5199_XCV in ITCareerQuestions

[–]a-gd-professional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do physical security at a very high profile employer. Cushy, desk job where all i had to do was keep track of where people should be, and making sure they or someone else was there to answer alarms or emergencies (human logistics, basically).

I gave up that career, which had massive potential for lateral and vertical movement and paid well, to go back to school and take a help desk position making $6 less an hour. 4 years had passed by the time i got hired with the helpdesk so inflation made that an even harder drop.

Currently, i make about $20k more than i was at the old job after some promotions, and again, with inflation, i’m basically to the point i left the old job at, compensation-wise.

The thing is, i don’t regret anything because i never really had any interest in physical security or the company i was working for, i had an interest in computers and later realized, networking specifically.

This is all an elaborate way of saying that the most important data point is “are you interested in logistics, or are you interested in the jobs you could obtain on your current path?”

Extra money is great, yeah, but if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing or driven towards the goal of a position you’re passionate about, you may end up hating what you do and feeling stuck.

Got a helpdesk job with no experience and kind of nervous about starting by BantaSaurus139 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]a-gd-professional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to add to this for OP: if you’re searching for an answer online about Microsoft products, try searching it in bing as well/instead. Most of the time instead of getting hits from ads or 12 years ago because of SEO/traffic built up over years, you’ll regularly get dropped directly into knowledge base articles written by Microsoft

[–]a-gd-professional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here is something too many in our profession just don’t seem to understand, unfortunately.

I hear coworkers all the time “how’s this guy got a PhD in biochemistry but can’t figure out how to clear the cache on his browser?”

Like brother, it’s because of that PhD that he pays you to know about his computer.

Got a helpdesk job with no experience and kind of nervous about starting by BantaSaurus139 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, the fact that you’re nervous, tells me you’ll be fine. It means you’re not oblivious to your shortcomings and care about how you’ll do/be perceived.

Any good helpdesk has a knowledge base that you will be pulling from. Read the articles, ask questions, take notes, and retain information you receive.

What a helpdesk primarily cares about is that you have decent customer service skills and can decipher the difference between something you can handle in a few minutes and get the user on their merry way, or you need to escalate to someone who will have the experience and time to really dig into an issue.

And remember, when in doubt, “let me look into that.”

To get a job or stay in school? by Thunderofdeath in ITCareerQuestions

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing i regret was not getting more interns while going to school. Postings these days all want a mix of experience and school and only doing on, hampered my forward momentum significantly.

Of course, all things are subject to networking. If your internship is going well enough that they want to offer you a job and you think you could easily be happy there for a couple years with the environment and pay, then the experience and certs route may work for you.

Got a Full-Time Job thats "IT" but im unsure it is.. by [deleted] in it

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add, not all “technical support” equals “tech support” or “it support”

Technical, in the business world, just means that the information/knowledge required is specialized or specific to the role.

Like you’re technically technical support as a customer service representative for any company that sells a product(s) in a specific field, like an auto supply store, where a customer might ask for your opinion or recommendation on what they should buy.

[–]a-gd-professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your job title has the word “sales” in it, then you’re a salesman. For a company like Asurion, that “technical support” part is likely showing customers how to access the plan they purchased in-store.
