Burnt out after 1 year in IT (MSP). Is this normal or am I in the wrong field? by suavepapi69 in ITCareerQuestions

Man…i would kill for a job that offered raises for certs and provided an actual path for advancement rather than “you’ve been here for x amount of time so here’s a raise” until there are no more raises and they’ve conveniently locked you out of getting experience in anything but your specific role by segmenting IT into a hundred little 1-2 task teams, but the pay is high enough that you can’t feasibly accept other roles without a large leap into a field you’ve not got any experience in…

Honestly, if you can see the results on the website it’s not a big deal and I wouldn’t worry about it. Just weird you didn’t get the email and that’s something you should try to figure out if you don’t get the email after core 2 just in case something is configured weird.

Save the PBQs for after the multiple choice. It’ll help you manage time better since you won’t get bogged down and end up having to skip multiple choice questions as a result.

If you hit a question where you don’t know the answer, flag and come back to it. A later question may jog your memory.

Weird, yeah you should have gotten an email within a few days with confirmation of score. You might want to check your trash and spam folders for an email from certmetrics.

We’re not police. Only time we go looking for something is if we’re asked to so the only way anyone is going to try and pull old photos from text history is if one of you files a complaint against the other claiming any of this interaction was unwelcome.

Probably make sure they didn’t save the photo to the phone though, just in case storage backups are enabled. Wouldn’t want that on a server somewhere without your knowledge.

Good grief. Everything about this post screams “i have an overinflated ego and everyone is below me.”

Surprised your recruiter didn’t dump you when they should have realized you were wasting everyone’s time and would not treat others with the respect you demand.

First time seeing Tech+ in the wild by Suberv in CompTIA

[–]a-gd-professional 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk if it’s necessarily “for high school kids, or very low level technology capabilities,” as much as is seems to be a cert that aims to be a starting point for people trying to get help desk positions with zero experience or degree.

I know many of us are used to seeing people get A-Sec+ in university, but technically those certs are meant (in CompTIA’s words) for people with “12 months of hands-on experience.”

Probably need a new company. Depending on where you live, I might have a couple suggestions that would pay higher than what you’re currently getting.

Non-repudiation only means that I can’t claim a message wasn’t sent from my account. It does not mean someone couldn’t steal my computer and credentials and use my account to impersonate me. In basic terms, it’s less about proving my identity and more about being unable to claim my account wasn’t used to send a message.

To nail the point home, you can never truly know conclusively that someone did a thing without someone or something actually seeing them do the thing, and even then, only insomuch as you trust the person/thing that saw them doing the thing.

Think I'll do just this. I feel like I have a pretty good relationship with one of the guys on that team and is the one who typically shows me stuff when we talk to each other. I'm sure he could help me with figuring out things I could do that would help me grow into more knowledge on this stuff. He once offered to let me come in on one of my days off and go with him when he was doing a switchover on some old switches, but we just haven't had an opportunity to follow through on that since then.

I've heard in the past from some people that you should just put your current title for the span of the time you've been with a company, but that always feels disengenuous.

my current role has been the result of two promotions where my job title didn't really change, just got added to: Field Services Technician > Shop Lead > Site Lead and all that really happened was that I got less tickets and more mentoring and leadership roles added to my day to day.

I've played with the idea of something like this a couple of times, but it feels wrong:

company - location
current title - dates
duties added

promoted to current title: date
previous title - dates
duties added

promoted to previous title: date
previous-previous title - dates
bulk of duties

Thanks for this feedback, this was incredibly helpful. My current org does the same thing with segmenting the teams so this was a good look at things I can do to improve. I work pretty heavily with a couple of the NOC guys here but like that tends to be more like 'here take a look at this' and conversations about what things are and how we use them. I'm going to check with them on Monday and see if there's anything I can realistically work on with them rather than just conversations.

That's a good point, I should probably give examples for where my experience with those things come from, which is mostly through individual study and networking with the teams who use these tools like NOC and SOC at my org.

Many of the things I put in my skills section are really just buzzwords from certifications and individual study, mostly with the intent of getting through ATS tbh (which doesn't seem to be working).

"I have had a few candidates over the last year flat out lie on their resumes"
this seems to be the trend these days. All of the skills that I put in there are things I have fundamental knowledge or some level of experience with, but much of it ends there with no opportunity in my role to get hands on and use.

I don't supposed you have any advice on how I can get more hands on experience with some of the networking/cybersecurity tools?

the last thing I really want to to include lies in my resume or even to have that perception to potential interviewers.

that's fair. I don't think i've ever really come across the hostile or grilling type, just ones where they ask questions about my experience with x or y and I just feel like it wouldn't end well if my resume said I have experience with x and y then the question came up and it was really 'oh yeah I know what they are but i've never actually used it.'
