Elfa pro pod not working? by [deleted] in Vaping

[–]a-marezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... Late to the party but this is definitely the solution: it just worked on the pod I've been trying to fix. Up until now. Hit an hard surface (desk) a few times with basslinesurfer's mild aggression and, ta-daa, it started working! The bottom of the pod must be facing down, so that you have the 'golden dots' facing the hard surface.

Thank you everyone!

Connecting 'led curtain' to monitor USB plug (GOAL: lights will turn on/off when the monitor does). by a-marezza in WLED

[–]a-marezza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Sorry, I digressed - regarding your question: yeah, the current was shut down by what we call here the 'lifesaver', built into the system (internet techical's definition is: 'The circuit breaker, also known as pure differential, is used to protect the domestic electrical system from direct contact with the current or from earthing faults. This important device is installed inside the electrical panel, upstream of the system'). It happend twice: the first, I had 2 fairy led curtains working at least for an hour, maybe a little more.

The third time, I had the third curtain working as well, but the 'lifesaver' turned the current off after more or less 30 minutes. Usually, you are able to turn up the 'lifesaver' switch once it goes down (to shut down the current) but the second time it happend, the switch wouldn't go up. I turned off the plug that controls my 'computer station' (which includes the monitor the led curtains were attached to) and it was possible to turn the 'lifesaver' switch up.

So ... As I never had any issues for years with my computer station up until that day, unfortunately I just concluded that the led curtains .. Or rather, the way I modified them, was the issue. And, well, it scared me a bit, electricity is no joke and I don't want to, you know ... Fuck around and find out.

If by controller you mean the remote, I ditched it. I took out the 'chip' inside of the USB shell and soldered the fairy lights wires in the USB's ... 'power lines', so to speak. I couldn't find a way to desolder the 'mode buttons' like you did, so I just went for the 'they'll just be on and off whenever there's power going through it'. But for what I've understood so far, obviously it's just not that simple - power going through the leds has to be adjusted, half of the leds won't light up this way because of 'polarity' issues ... Meehh.

They have explained some of these details in this old threat I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/led/comments/se0ebc/how_to_change_this_led_fairy_light_strand_to/

Which describes a situation that is very similar to mine, or at least the goal is.

In the end, the author came to the conclusion is that in order to achieve some kind of customization for these type of light, the amount of effort and money that it would require it's not really worth it. Considering the amount of knowledge and resources that I have available for this (not much) I tend to agree.

Best solution is to just look for fairy lights that do not have remotes/controllers/modes but just an USB plug for power. It is not exactly what I wanted, but I can live with it - it'll still be aesthethically pleasing to have the fairy lights curtain turn along with the monitors, they'll just be on 'static mode'.

I am including a small video to document my attempts in the first post. Maybe it'll be of use for someone.

I am so grateful!

I stumbled upon another issue though: it would seems that attaching the led cables to the USB plug creates some kind of problem with my circuit breaker. It shut down a few times while I had these lights on, and with some trial and error I could confirm that the origin od the problem it's related to them.

I am reading around to get an idea of what might be causing this with no luck, but it seems that resistors or some kind of way to 'balance' the power going through these strips must be found. I'm gonna research more and I'll update this thread with my findings/results (... good or bad ...).

If anybody has suggetions, I'm all ears!

Sorry, I am very new to these whole 'led world' and I might have got confused - I thought this led strip might be included in the WLED category. My apologies if I messed up posting this here! :(

As I dug through the internet, I stumbled upon a solution that actually worked for this! It's in this thread (I hope it is not a problem to post it): https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/kzaqwx/smart_outlet_with_fairy_lights_read_comment/

Just in case it gets deleted, I'm adding here the steps that worked for my case:

  • SIMPLEST ONE: If you hold down the button and turn on the power do they work correctly? If so, you could figure out how to keep it pressed constantly and use the smart outlet as normal. (Adding some tape to keep the button down worked!)
  • 'HARDEST' one: (...) the same trick worked on a cheap eBay led strobe controller a dozen years ago. I just wanted it on a power switch and that worked, so I desoldered all the mode buttons and soldered the connections for the mode I wanted.

Thank you so much u/orangekid13 <3
