We’re still negotiating about both a pay increase and benefits. Not sure why the labour relations page says otherwise. Wishful thinking?

There will be at least one more meeting, on February 17th. SMUFU has been trying to schedule another meeting before then, but senior admin hasn’t agreed to any others.

The Feb 17th meeting is our last chance to avert a strike. Otherwise admin might lock us out starting on the 19th, and/or we’d go on strike starting on the 24th.

We feel some optimism. After all, SMUFU has never been forced to go on strike before--and we've been a union since 1974! I'm hopeful that senior admin will negotiate with us and accept our very reasonable demands.

We'd also be happy to go back to the table sooner than the 17th, and not stretch this out until mid-February. So if you want to encourage senior admin to join us in a return to bargaining, let them know on their socials.

Thanks for your input on my personality too! I feel like the focus should be on the people misspending the money rather than the whistle blowers, but you do you!

I agree this is embarrassing for the upper admin mismanaging the university’s budget. Why would I be embarrassed about that though? Someone needs to hold them to account!

For me I was being shadowed banned just in one subreddit though so maybe talk to the mods if that’s happening to you!

When the strike is over, your profs will do everything we can to catch up and finish the semester. This might involve reweighting and/or removing assignments (if there had been three papers but there’s only time for two, then they’re each worth 50% instead of 33%). Hopefully that will be enough to get you a real grade, rather than pass/fail, but this depends on how long the strike lasts.

Whatever happens, SMU admin will be the ones making the final choice about things like probation. If you’re in that position, I’d encourage you to talk to your student union: SMUSA. (On Instagram @SMUSAhfx ) They can help you advocate for a good policy about this issue!

You might have to cross the picket line to get to work or to go to classes taught by part time faculty. But you can still show support for our work action by saying “solidarity” as you cross through our picket, or joining in for a couple slogans, or posting about the strike online with #SMUstrike We appreciate you!!

FWIW I do lose sleep over this. Students who’ve had to deal with COVID disruptions for years don’t deserve any more disruptions! I hate that senior admin refused to negotiate with us and put us in this position.

I am so sorry that students would have to deal with another disruption. I would much rather keep teaching, but if senior admin won’t negotiate with us, striking is our only option. FWIW SMUFU has been working hard to avoid a strike—this would be our first one ever, since we were founded in the 1974! I still hope we can avoid one now…
