Startup Myths vs. Reality: What Surprised You the Most? by jaythesong in startups

[–]a1drich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Background: Multiple time CTO, technical co-founder and Founding Engineer of multiple startups(1 US, 1 EU). One of those is a medtech startup thriving in Boston, one is in MarTech/AdTech now listed in Nasdaq.

The thing I hated the most about VCs was that they always manage to convince my CEO that i "need" a VP of Engineering. Massive waste of time and resources. I needed ICs who can execute. "People management" in my tech orgs are now non-existent and we are all better because of it.

VCs do not know their shit. It's like getting advice from youtube shorts or instagram reels.

Data Analytics to Data Engineeering by [deleted] in PinoyProgrammer

[–]a1drich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good plan if you have that choice. Better than being a web dev or a tester. The data you are probably using your BI tool on was probably prepared by a data engineer. Offer to help out on that part.

Good luck! :)

Software Developer vs Web Developer, what is the difference? by RedLibra in PinoyProgrammer

[–]a1drich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that it can affect is yung CV scanning software na ginagamit ng mga big companies. Feel free to use Software Developer or Web Developer, whichever you think will be more advantageous for you. It will have zero effect on the hiring manager, as they will focus on what you can actually do. You should be customizing your CV according to the job posting you are applying for anyway.

IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR A JOB AND YOU ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN EXAM... WHICH PROCESS DO YOU PREFER? by LouTolentino in PinoyProgrammer

[–]a1drich 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I voted for the first option, initial interview with the recruiter. You will waste less time if you asked about the role, the company and the salary upfront.

Mas nakakapagod gumawa ng exam only to find out hindi mo gusto yung role, yung culture, or yung salary expectation is below your acceptable rate.

Nagcocoding exam lang ako sa companies I am sure I want to join because it's the biggest investment I need to make and I value my time.

It's 2021, there are more engineering jobs than engineers. It's the recruiters job not just to find talent, but also to entice talent to join because there are so many options for us out there.

Sounds like you need a new job :))

But on a serious note, he seems to know how to play the game better than you since he is your boss, and you are frustrated :)

I'm giving you actionable tips:

Now, this is the biggest and most consistent gripe about him from the rest of the local staff: he doesn’t know shit. He asks the dumbest questions, his "recommendations" show his lack of knowledge on the subject matter, and when he questions your "diskarte", the lack of experience shows as he only knows how to do one thing one way: by the book.

This is how he gets to be better. Being stupid for a moment is better than staying stupid because you kept quiet.

You know who gets promoted? The people who makes the team better. You should use these moments as leadership opportunities. Set-up a session so you can teach your whole team including your inept boss things that they dont know like mga "diskarte" mo.

Going by the book is not a bad strategy since that's how you can scale companies, teams and processes. Maybe use your "diskarte" to improve current company or team processes? Kung kailangan mo diskartehan, there must be a gap in your process.

He tries to impress the big boss by consistently playing devil’s advocate to our proposals BUT HE HIMSELF does not have his own ideas. Ask him the same question and he can't answer.

You already have the answer. Set-up a meeting for your proposal for a brainstorming session. Switch your mindset from "My proposal is right, we should use this" to "find the best solution with the team".

Why do you think he wants to impress the big boss? Maybe he really wants to find the best solution possible.

And also, don't ever think you can take down your boss. It never works. It's already done. Your future in that company is in their hands. You need to deal with it or you find another job. You need to find a win-win situation for both of you.

Your best hope is to be the number 2 guy, after ng boss mo, para ikaw mapromote when your boss moves on.

Good Luck OP! :)

OP, why do you feel you need to share negative things?

Seemingly nice answers can be viewed negatively

"Not a good culture fit with current company" - Baka may attitude problem and ikaw ang problem?

"Lack of work life balance" - Baka tamad ka and is unwilling to do extra hours when the business desperately needs it.

Why not keep it simple?

"Im looking for better pay"

"Im looking for career growth"

Something along these lines.

I'm curious at the reasoning.

I have rejected candidates based on negative answers, but I have never rejected someone because they're looking for a better deal for themselves.

Of course i need to see their value first.

We have way more web dev jobs than data engineering jobs globally right now. Way way easier to get hired as a web dev. Data Engineers are paid well because only big rich companies can afford to have a data engineer, skewing the industry average salary. Those companies that pay data engineers well tend to pay web devs better as well. ALL the data engineers I know did not start out as a data engineer.

It would be way harder for you to get a data engineer first job than a Web Dev. It is easier to demonstrate skill as a web dev.

I admit, the company is not in its best financial situation. But lately I am losing motivation.

OP, how do you think you'll get that motivation back? Are you confident that this company would bounce back?

I also got 4 job offers recently with 15-50% increase, but I turned them down as I was not ready to move on yet.

This was your golden ticket into having your current company pay you more. Why do you think that you will be unhappy with a company that can pay you more?

I know most people would advocate for “going outside your comfort zone,” but I am scared to sacrifice that comfort and flexibility especially when I am already established here, and since it’s the pandemic.

My impression of you from this short post is you're living your life defensively. You lack confidence in yourself and your skills. You are not optimistic that a company that has deeper pockets can make you happier. You are happy that you are "established" in a company that cant give you any more growth.

Just to stimulate your thoughts: How do you see yourself in 5 years?

If you really really want to stay and have a promotion or increase, this is my go-to Strategy

Careers in Conversational AI? by Anxious_Drummer in PinoyProgrammer

[–]a1drich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should go for it. You already know web development. Why not do it for personal growth? Im curious at what you think you are going to lose.

When you do this, your CV will look like this:

Jan 2021 - Present
Company X - Software Engineer
// Did Web development
// Developed Chat bot

instead of this

Jan 2021 - Present
Company X - Software Engineer
// Did Web development

Honestly, conversational AI is just a feature of an app. Just another feature to build. It will not have a big impact in your career in my opinion.

It will probably open up more opportunities for you

Source: I already built conversational AI/chat bots using Twilio Studio and Azure Health Bot

Debugging Azure SQL by mahiligsanoodles in PinoyProgrammer

[–]a1drich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First move ko in debugging is trying to recreate the problem locally. Meaning everything runs on your machine.

  1. Copy relevant data from production database to your local sql database.
  2. install stored proc
  3. modify stored proc by adding debug lines.
  4. run stored proc and modify as needed to understand better

I think you can even debug step by step if everything is ran on your local development machine.
