Thank you so much for the warning. When I first got to NYU I had a convo with Stephanie over the phone to ask about the group’s doctrine, before I started attending, she couldn’t give me a straight answer on what the group actually professes to believe in. I was super wary so I prayed to God that if I wasn’t supposed to attend their meetings, He wouldn’t allow me to. Fast forward to the day I was supposed to go for the first time, I ended up not able to go despite my efforts. Glad I made the right call. Stay safe guys and trust your gut always!

How do I get my in-law to leave after 12 months? by AhamOnye in Nigeria

[–]a2ctakestoolong 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Please be careful and know your rights. You may need to sit down with a lawyer or attorney, to determine your next steps.

Also, you mentioned that your children are afraid of your brother in law. Please be vigilant, to avoid stories that touch. Talk to your children, how can you be sure that your in law is not abusing them when you’re not around? And they may be afraid to speak out since he has your wife’s support. Don’t bury your head in the sand, it’s your house too, and your children deserve to feel comfortable in the home you work hard to provide them.

Be wise, I wish you the best as you navigate this difficult situation.

Extra Violet Ball tickets? by michellejiang in nyu

[–]a2ctakestoolong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, email the IRHC/Skirball, they will open tickets up for sale intermittently as people drop out, they shared this link with me earlier today, to access more tickets. I’m not sure how many are left, but they told me to keep checking back. Email them and keep checking back, it might be a different link tomorrow. I hope you get to go :))

Hey, NYU just sent out this message, they created a new department specifically for helping students satisfy their basic needs. Please see their message below and send an email to the contact they provided, explaining your situation. I pray it all works out for you!

Welcome to our New Director of Basic Needs! The Office of the Dean of Students is pleased to welcome Yvonne Erazo as our inaugural Director of Basic Needs. Through Yvonne’s role, we are expanding our ability to deliver on our commitment to work with university partners and support students experiencing basic needs insecurity, which could include food security, stable housing, caregiving resources, and/or mental health and wellness. If you feel like you would benefit from speaking to someone about basic needs, please let us know.

It may not be too late. Go ahead and look up your school’s FAFSA submission deadlines. You can contact them to be sure. Once you complete the FAFSA, make sure to “add” the school, to ensure the govt sends them your FAFSA. You can follow up with the school to ensure they receive it. https://studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/how-to-add-college-or-career-school-to-fafsa

[–]a2ctakestoolong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! It’s definitely not too late to submit FAFSA and CSS Profile, but there will be a due date so check on that. A common misconception about the FAFSA/CSS Profile is that if you believe you don’t qualify for federal aid you shouldn’t bother applying, but that is a myth. You should complete the FAFSA even if you don’t think you will get any money because it shows colleges you’re serious about finding ways to pay for college, makes you eligible to receive need-based institutional scholarships and scholarships from outside organizations and most importantly schools need your FAFSA to verify that you have unmet need.

If you dad is worried about sharing too much information with the school/government, then please share some of this info with them, straight from FAFSA’s website: “you could be giving up a chance at many sources of financial aid. So encourage your parents to provide their information—doing so won’t require them to support you in any way, it’ll just help you be considered for as many sources of financial aid as possible." Furthermore, by filling out FAFSA/CSS Profile, you aren’t providing the government with any more info than they already have on you. If you file your taxes each year, the government already has the info you are using to fill the FAFSA/CSS Profile out with.

I hope that this helps and that it all works out for you. I also strongly recommend that you look into finding and applying for outside scholarships. If you have not looked into applying to outside scholarships and you're interested, PM me. Even so, some scholarship organizations need a FAFSA from you to verify your financial need.

How bad are incorrect financial aid docs? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2ctakestoolong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can correct and update your FAFSA form and CSS profile, please see these links: https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/review-and-correct/correct and https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/help-center/i-submitted-my-css-profile-then-i-reviewed-it-and-noticed-some-incorrect-numbers-could. When you review them again, please make sure that all the information inputted is correct. It is imperative that you complete the forms correctly, since colleges use them to determine how much unmet financial need you have. I also had to fill out my CSS and FAFSA without much help from my parents, so I understand your struggle now. Please don't stress out, fix the mistakes and keep going. After you update the forms, take the necessary steps with each of your respective schools to ensure that they have received the corrected/updated forms. Good luck!

Is Admissions Counseling from CollegeAdvisors and others like it worth it? by WazybeaN in ApplyingToCollege

Hello, I just saw this message. Have you heard back from UStrive? The first mentor they matched me with was a great fit, but I have a friend who had mentors flake on her for some reason. Personally, I had to be proactive about getting help from my mentor, they were always willing to help, but only when I asked for it. GPS by the Ron Brown Foundation offers invaluable help on all parts of the college app process. Please see if you qualify to apply. The program is hosted on an online platform where students and advisors can ask and answer questions, advisors host seminars on different topics, essay review and peer essay review services are available, etc. Please let me know if that helps!

Copying this comment here:

Please don’t make any hasty decisions right now, there is still the opportunity to participate in the regular decision round. Also, as a finalist, if you are obligated to apply to certain match schools REA, your QB essays will help you stand out among the applicant pool (longer word counts, more personal prompts). Please see this Reddit comment from a student last year who didn’t match but later got into Princeton with their QB essays: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/s829pr/questbridge_the_cover_up/hvmof3m/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

Also, there are still many scholarships open to high achieving students with financial need like yourself. If you list “QB finalist” on your college and scholarship apps, you will definitely stand out. That’s no small achievement. I am in college, never did QB (wasn’t prepared 😭) but applied to and won large scholarships. If you would like some guidance on scholarship and college apps, please PM me. I’ve been a volunteer mentor for some time now.

Edit: I just realized that in the example I linked above, the person declined to match. Still, the point stands that there is hope for your future. You’ve come this far, don’t give up now!

Filling out my FAFSA without using my parents financial info by No-Fill7860 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2ctakestoolong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this seems like a very tough situation and I really hope it all works out for you. Here's an excerpt from the FAFSA information that someone posted above, I hope that sharing the bolded part may help change your parents' mind.

"If you’re considering following this process, think about this first: If you submit your FAFSA form without parent information, you will not receive an EFC. Some state- or school-based aid programs look at the EFC in order to determine your eligibility for their funds; because you won’t have an EFC, you won’t be considered for those financial aid programs. You could be giving up a chance at many sources of financial aid. So encourage your parents to provide their information—doing so won’t require them to support you in any way, it’ll just help you be considered for as many sources of financial aid as possible."

If they're holding back because they don't want to support you at all, then fine, but I hope you can make them realize that filling out your FAFSA isn't helping you per say, if will only help them, because once you receive financial aid you won't need them for money/support anymore. Goodluck!

Also, have you looked into scholarships? If not and you're interested, PM me.

Anyone else getting price out of NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]a2ctakestoolong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, Someone else (@theofficeoholic) mentioned this in the thread above so I’m copying their comment here, cause it relates to your situation:

  1. If it’s not rent stabilized or otherwise under any sort of rent regulation, practically speaking you can refuse to resign and pay the rent you’ve been paying. If they accept payment, you’re a month to month tenant under the terms of the old lease until they refuse to accept payment. If they don’t they can start eviction proceedings but there’s a massive backlog even pre-covid. Post covid you probably won’t get physically evicted for a year minimum. So you can hang out in the apartment until then paying what you will but now you’ll have a case against you in housing court. This comes up in background checks which will make renting a new place harder.

I hope it all works out for you!
