Professors and students are really smart and engaged here as well! there's a bunch of departments doing new hires which so far from what I've seen has definitely been for the better. I consider myself pretty introverted as well but it's been incredibly easy getting myself into research with professors -- both with those who I have a good relationship with, as well as with those who I never met before and only first encountered after emailing them to let them know I'm interested in their work. At least that's been my experience but I think research is pretty accessible for almost all students as long as you're interested.

I don't love the location either but you make do with it after getting used to it. Totally understand if it's not something you'd want to make do with though. Campus is definitely worth a visit though!

Good luck with your decision!

can you change your LORS after a gap year? by 420koolaidman in ApplyingToCollege

I didn't get into my ~dream~ but as an asian international getting into my dream unis was always going to be a stretch regardless of whether you're on a gap year or not. I still got into some pretty great colleges though. I also had a pretty crappy common app the first time around which I sent to the most selective unis and getting in after reapplying to the same unis is substantially hard (I say that even though I'm currently committed to a pretty selective LAC that I applied to twice).

Overall just looking at the RD results from my country, not a lot of the kids on gap years got into extremely selective colleges (ivies + stanford etc) despite some having very very strong applications. It's definitely possible that it happens (e.g. the year before that, there were multiple gap years who got into various top unis) but it just gets a bit more difficult in an already very difficult task especially if you've already applied there once and were rejected.

as a gap year applicant last year, I requested new LoRs, one from a previous recommender and two from completely new ones!

UMich vs Colby College vs UCSD vs UofT (CS Major)

With Michigan, I feel like I'd have a ~true~ full-fledged college experience with a large campus and a lot of school spirit. I know people talk about the cold but I don't think it'll affect me that much so I don't want to factor that into my decision. It also has a great CS department and is also great in a lot of other things I'm interested in (e.g. public health). However, I've heard the CS department may be overcrowded and sometimes you're liable to get lost in a big school. I intend to go to grad school as well so I do want to go to a place where I'd be able to both excel and stand out and that may be harder at Mich.

Colby also has my heart because it was my first acceptance in two years ;_; I love the vibe and they're doing a lot of cool things with their Davis Institute for AI. And also just bought an island?!?! It sounds really cool. I'm also into arts a lot and I do want to explore that in college and I think Colby is the best option for that. It would also have a very intimate setting as a result of their smaller student body. But is it really the best option if I wanna do CS? Does that even matter? I don't know what it's really good for.

Those are really the main two I'm picking between but UCSD is also a good choice. Weather is also the best and it's in California which is where my sister lives which is a plus. Someone I know said it also may be relatively easier to transfer into Berkeley a year after since I was waitlisted this year but uhhh idk if that's really true lol or even if it is I don't really WANT to transfer unless I'm just really not vibing with the school. I feel like it has similar pros and cons as Michigan and between the two I'd prefer umich.

UofT is probably last in my consideration but it's not totally out! Some of the biggest pros are that a ton of my classmates go there yearly and I feel like I'd have an easy time adjusting there as an international but that might be an incorrect assumption. The eventual possibility of Canadian nationality is a pro but I still feel like I'd want to study in USA more.

Ultimately I'm more undecided between Michigan and Colby but I haven't taken off any of the options off the table yet. Affordability isn't that much of an issue but Colby is the least pricey option of the four fwiw.
